Marguerite Gardner was a socialite and writer who published two travelogues/memoirs: The Idler in Italy 1939 and The Idler in France 1941. First printings of the latter are much more scarce. Our example is enhanced by the gilt decorated binding signed by Stikeman & Co. art bookbinders who frequently rebound books for Scribner's in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The books are in near-fine condition: bindings a clean bright and tight with minimal color rubbing along joints; pages are clean and bright with perhaps the barest hint of toning. First Edition. I-VII consisting of Nos. 1-66 published 1895-1901. 2644 pp. plus inserts continuously paginated printed on coated "art paper" stock illus. w/ full page portrait plates variously tinted in sepia gray and pink with pink tissue guards. Mild external war cloth along joints and at corners somewhat rubbed with mild soiling to back cover cloth. Binding and hinges fully intact. Interior shows some gatherings toned by age others still bright all leaves intact with no brittleness to paper slight dampstaining evident at top corner only of the final several leaves. Scarce - especially the large map for which I find no sales records since 1915! This work covers the years 1760-1820. Wolf Tone and others inspired by the French Revolution organized in 1791 to throw off the English oppressors. resulting in the 1798 Rebellion which was crushed by British forces. Madden made it his focus to assemble original sources to report fully on these Irish participants. This is the second of three series in the complete work. With an excellent large fold-out map in color: " Ortelius Improved or a new map of Ireland . " The folding map republishes the 1777 map which Charles O'Connor published bearing the names both of the English and Irish proprietors in the beginning of 1700. It contains all the names of the conspicuous and illustrious families of Ireland." With 8 portrait engravings in vol.2; the Contents calls for 8 plates in vol. 1 which are lacking here but they are also lacking from the digitized copy from Dublin. Vol. 2 has these: Thomas A. Translated by Mary Douglass Fairbairn younger sister of Norman Douglas and it's rumoured that Douglas assisted in the translation. Norman Douglas was a long time Capri resident and his 1917 classic 'South Wind' was a fictionalised account of the island and its residents. Fairbairn has inscribed this copy on the front free endpaper: 'D. Ll. Edwards with kind regards from the translator. Knighton Dec 16th 97'. Scarce. Overall condition is Very Good. External description: corners and spine tips rounded and bumped with minor fraying at the extremities of the corners. Some bumping as well to the board edges where they extend beyond the textblock. Rubbed lightened spot to the center of the spine column and darkening ot the top of the boards and the top edge of the textblock. Interior description: Front pastedown with two erasure spots - brown papers lightened and scuffed from the erasure. Front hinge is split with paper exposing the binding web - still relatively solid. The rear hinge is starting but not as advanced as the front. Darkening to the edges of the back of the free endpapers from the dark brown endpaper coloring coming through. Some light soil at the half-title. Frontispiece plates graphs and maps intact including two large folding maps bound in at rear and an extending graph in the supplements. One of the folded maps has a long tear at the binding edge. Binding feels solid and sturdy although cupping the spine will always be recommended with a book of this size and weight. Advert for the European publisher's catalog affixed to the rear pastedown. The pages are bright and clean majorly free of the foxing that generally plagues books of this time period. A well-kept copy inspite of the wear at the hinges and board edges. 637 pp. W.H. Allen & Co. hardcover
