Vaux appears on front fixed endpapers the blank leaf following front free endpaper and the half title of vol. 1. Inscription on blank leaf indicates that Vaux acquired the volumes in 1859. This edition is a revision "with information from further travels of the author's Sketches of the Natural Civil and Political State of Swisserland." Includes index and bibliographical references. Without the maps of Switzerland and of Mont Blanc called for in the list of maps and plates as issued but including the folding panorama "View of the Alps as seen from the Environs of Berne" as well as plates showing a view of the lakes of Thun and Brienz from the top of the Niess the bearded vulture the timber bridge of Wettingen and two bouquetins. De Lesseps accompanied La Perouse on the first part of his attempted circumnavigation of the globe. After investigation of the west coast of North America La Perouse sent de Lesseps overland to take the journals and maps of the expedition to Paris. La Perouse and his ships subsequently were lost after they left Australia and the journals carried by de Lesseps assumed great historical significance when published. Even more scarce than those records today are de Lesseps' report of his own overland travels through the Kamtschatka peninsula. The report also includes 25 pages of vocabulary translating common English words into Russian Kamtschadale Koriac Tchouktchi and Lamont languages. Internally clean with only minor foxing the two volumes in 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards have recently been sympathetically rebacked original title and volume patches retained. Maurice Margarot 1745-1815 was one of the founders of the London Corresponding Society which sought parliamentary reform in England. In 1793 he was arrested and charged with sedition. He was convicted and transported to New South Wales in May 1794. After his return to England in 1810 he testified regarding corruption in New South Wales. In Good Condition: disbound; first blank leaf and frontispiece portrait and last several leaves are partially detached; last 3 leaves have closed tear from the gutter; light soiling; a few pencilled marginal notations. This volume of Gifford's history covers the years from 1328 under Philip the 6th to 1483 under Lewis the 11th. This Philadelphia edition is much scarcer than the 1794 London edition.
