Published in the Illustrated Atlas And Modern History Of The World Geographical Political Commercial & Statistical Edited By R. Montgomery Martin. The last great illustrated map of Scotland in the manner of early tourism maps dedicated for the being a souvenir for visitors abroad Hunters etc. Beautiful and interesting map of Scotland including its islands- the Hebrides or Western Isles Orkney Isles and the more distant Shetland Islands pictured in inset box in the tope right corner. The northern part of Ireland England and the Isle of Man are also shown. Scotland's counties from Wigton in the south to Caithness in the north are delineated. Rivers and lakes are also shown and relief shown through hachuring. Bar- scale shown in lower right corner. Ornate bordering. John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much-anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". Illustrated with coat of arms armorial illustrations vignettes. Brownish marbled paper covered boards with leather corners and spine. Gilt title and 5 bands on the spine. Green end sheets. Leather is dry cracked rubbed and chipped head of the spine. Hinges are broken but covers are attached. Text is very clean. Possibly this is the editors copy. Occasional correction marks and added information written in the margins. This copy has 14 additional tipped in letters armorial illustration pamphlets information etc. Some of the added information includes; a 2 page extract from "Marquis of Buckingham dated Stowe Dec 3d 1786" and addressed to "Sir John Temple Bart Counsul Genl New York" signed by "Robert C. Winthrop Boston 1866"; a printed paper slip concerning Carey Estates in Durham broadside; a printed name card of Mr. McCallum with added notes; a two page critical letter signed by Walter Rye; a hand drawn armorial like illustration worded - "Her lies John Whitmore Esquire He Was Mayor of this City 4 years Successively King Edward the 3rd Then Raining sp"; a 4 page letter with additional information on Francis Sykes signed by James Sykes; tipped in behind Sykes letter is a one page note initialed Q. F. V. F. Also included is a 4 page creased pamphlet titled "The Barony of Hylton" with corrections added notes and signed "W. Hylton Dyer Longstaffe; a "Cary of Everton Co. Bedford printed broadside with printed signature of Wm. Grigson; another two page hand written letter unsigned adding additional information and more. This journal was published in 8 volumes from the years 1863-1874. The rear board is detached and hanging loose from the binding held in place by protective mylar jacket. The interior text is very clean. This copy is the editor's copy and includes several additional notes and corrections in pencil at least one signed by the editor. This copy has approx. 30 additional tipped in letter printed notes hand written notes a armorial drawing etc. many are addressed to John Nichols. Some of the additional information provided includes a hand written noted signed by Charles J. Robinson; an 8 page prospectus for "The Harleian Society"; a clipped newsprint letter to the editor titled "America: An explanation" by Bower Wood dated 1864 which is pasted to an 1865 one page note; an 1865 3 page note signed by Cecil Morris; a 3 page letter dated May 1864 with attached news clipping; 4 tipped in "Biographical and Genealogical Notices" including one on John Shakespere and one on "Pedigree of The Shaksperes of Sratford-On-Avon.and Essex"; a 4 page letter with signature not legible; 1 page letter dated 1867 signed 'Geo. Hen. Dashwood; and other signed notes signatures not clear and printed information. This journal was published in 8 volumes from the years 1863-1874. The River Clyde can be seen running through the industrial city being joined by the smaller River Kelvin in the lower left corner. Canals railways street and district areas of the city are also included. The coat of arms of the City of Glasgow is present on the map. Decorative scrolling and title cartouche around the edges of the map. One of the few double page plans published by Tallis. 19th Century Scottish Farm Ledger 1845-1848

184897631848. Full Leather. Good binding. 5-1/4" x 3-3/8." 108 pp. Full brown leather over flexible boards. Vertical red rules for accounting printed on each page. 1-3/8" strip of leather neatly removed from the fore-edge of the front cover; occasional ink spotting and minor stains throughout; toned leaves with a few creases; faded pencil calculations to pastedowns. Interesting mid-19th century farm ledger apparently from eastern Scotland possibly Inverurie or Aberdeen recorded during the great famines in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. The currency symbols at the top of the expense and income columns appear to be in pounds shilling and pence and various place and personal names which appear repeatedly in the text – i.e. Commercial Co. of Port Elfinston sic Aberdeen Wm. Duncan et al – lead to our deducing this locale. Although the ledger is anonymous the names of Robert Frasier Brach and James Dugard appear possibly as business clients as do the names of the recorder's many temporary workers. These workers usually hired around the planting and harvesting season are both male and female and include Mary Ellice Jas Marr George Dugard Wm. Duncan Alex Burr and many others. Extensively detailed and highly readable this ledger document the many expenses and income sources of a working farm showing precise amounts for equipment scythes and carts feature prominently horses bolls of meal barrels of lime whisky and various other sundries. The farm's produce relied heavily on grains especially corn and barley just as the Corn Laws were being heatedly debated in Parliament and its overall diversity demonstrates the crop diversity that allowed eastern Scotland and the Lowlands to evade the ravages of the potato blight; plots and crops for planting the "slack land" are also demarcated. Charts showing daily employee wages are also of special note. Overall a unique useful and well-maintained agricultural document concurrent with and standing in stark contrast to the devastation occurring in the western portion of the country and Ireland at that time. unknown
