Highlights include: Two remarkably scarce sermons one by influential dissenting minister and a founder of the Secession church Ebenezer Erskine 1680-1754; the other by James Guthrie c.1612- 1661 a Church of Scotland minister exempted from general pardon following the Restoration and subsequently executed on charges of high treason in part for being complicit in issuing a public testimony against religious toleration and regulations previously agreed to by Church and State. Interesting Provenance and signed manuscript dedication by the Cartographer and Mapmaker William Millar: From the library of Aberdeen Highlander Major Hugh Houstoun with a dedication: "April 27th 1798 - To Major Hugh Houstoun - from his Much obliged and Humble Servant William Millar". The fantastic Map in this publication was produced by William Millar who is identified inside the publication in the text of an Advertisement placed verso the titlepage and in which the Publisher Isaac Forsyth of Aberdeen gives thanks: ".For the very handsome manner in which the two first chapters were furnished by the Revd. Mr.Grant of Elgin and the other two by the Revd. Mr.Leslie of Darkland he offers this testimony of his grateful remembrance. Intriguingly there is included a chapter on the Society's proceedings on the eastern seaboard of America relating their attempts at converting members of the Indian nations both in terms of their successes and the difficulties encountered. Small hole in the upper right text margin from the title page disappearing by page 8. Map is not affected. Light toning to the map with a very tiny closed tear on the far left margin not affecting the content. The second called for map is missing. Text is lightly toned throughout. Previous owner signature top of the title page. Armorial bookplate of "W. D. Griswold Smith" on the front paste down. The bookplate is mostly covering up an earlier owner name in pencil. 17912110Edinburgh: Printed in the year 1791. 4to pp. 38. Stitched as issued with original marbled paper covers with no backstrip. Some creasing to corners and edges a few short tears to edges of wrappers. A scarce privately printed pamphlet providing arguments from history and use that the Prince of Wales later George IV held the titles of Duke of Rothesay Earl of Carrick etc. in the Peerage of Scotland. It evidently answers a charge that these had lapsed - perhaps stemming from the regency crisis of 1789 combined with the preference for Prince of Wales as the heir apparent’s title following the Union or else perhaps the dispute goes all the way back to the absence of a holder of the titles between 1751 the death of Frederick Louis and 1762 the birth of the future George IV. ESTC locates copies in the BL House of Lords and NLS x3 only in the UK plus just the Huntington elsewhere. ESTC T83694. Printed in the year unknown

Small Bookplate In Each Book For A' Thomas Giles' And Dated 1858. Pages Have Very Slight Aging And Hardly Any Foxing.Plates Are All Present . Treated Tan Calf Leather Hard Covers Which Has Preserved The Integrity Of The Leather Very Well. As To Be Expected There Is Some Wear To The Covers But It Is Very Minor Given The Age. The Spines On All Three Volumes Are Slightly Rubbed But The Gilt Bands Are Still Visible And The Red Bands With The Title And Volume Numbers Are Clear But With Very Minor Chipping.
