In 1809 Gustavus IV and his heirs were deposed and Charles XIII second son of Adolphus Frederick King of Sweden was selected as king. Having no heirs Bernadotte the French marshal was selected successor to the Swedish throne due to his popularity with the people. He became Charles XIV in 1818.
