In 1809 Gustavus IV and his heirs were deposed and Charles XIII second son of Adolphus Frederick King of Sweden was selected as king. Having no heirs Bernadotte the French marshal was selected successor to the Swedish throne due to his popularity with the people. He became Charles XIV in 1818. Corrected and updated to 1829 in manuscript. Linkoping is an ancient city in southern middle Sweden. Its current population is over 100000. Linkoping is also the episcopal see of the Diocese of Linkoping Church of Sweden and is well known for its cathedral. Linkoping is the center of an old cultural region that dates back to 13th century. Nowadays Linkoping is known for its university and its high-technology industries including Saab aircraft engines.
