Collection of correspondence between US officials and Theodore S. Fay among others at the time secretary of the US legation in Bern Switzerland. In 1859 Fay had delivered a report to the Swiss Federal Council Memorandum concerning the admission of North American Israelites to settle in Switzerland that was important in the struggle for emancipation of Jews in Switzerland. It had provided an overview of discriminatory Swiss laws against Jews in Switzerland while going to great depth to refute arguments that supported these laws. As a result small steps were taken in the Swiss cantons contributing to the eventual emancipation of Jews in Switzerland in 1866. Missing wraps but for most of spine. Very lightly age-toned.<br /> <br /> 2. Address "To the President of the United States." Single light blue printed leaf. Not dated. Memorial of Subscribers of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania protesting against the Swiss laws discriminating against Jews in Switzerland. Undated.<br /> <br /> 3. This Memorial. 1857. Printed Octavo circular 4pp. Protest addressed to the President of the United States against the Swiss for their restrictive laws against American Jews. Vigorous protest to President James Buchanan against blatant anti-Semitism in Switzerland. "It so happens that certain Cantons of the Swiss Confederation among which Basle and others have laws prohibiting Israelites from sojourning temporarily domiciliating or establishing themselves permanently. The treat. has clearly failed. for we are met by a dark age prescriptive law declaring us unworthy of participating in the rights of our fellow citizens on account of our professing the Israelitisch religion." This demand illustrates the disparity between the United States Constitution which protects freedom of religion and yet is not doing enough to protect these same freedoms for its citizens when they travel abroad. Signed by various Jewish petitioners including Isaac M. Wise of Ohio. Scarce: Singerman 1515 cites two other known copies of this pamphlet. It dives straight into the text. This is followed by a folder with places for 4 pamphlets and a very long fold out of Swiss historical figures The f/o is 16.5x600cm quite long. It is separated at the 2nd fold line. There are no other fold line tears. This fold out's colorful cover is titled "Grundungsfeier der Stadt Bern" and is shown at the bottom on our pic #3. Pic #5 shows it unfolded. At portfolio's end is a section of 28 loose plates. These 28 are all reproduced photos. Pic #4 of two of the pamphlets one contains reproductions of photos. The other unfortunately is empty. More unfortunately the gothic font is difficult for me to read. Hence I've made no attempt to decipher. . hardcover

John Watts de Peyster 1821-1907 was born into a prominent and wealthy New York family was active in the New York militia his brevet rank of major-general was conferred in 1866 in recognition of meritorious services which did not include active service; in reorganizing New York City fire and police departments; and as an author on a variety of topics including military history DAB V p. 248. A lovely and unusual decorative "gift" binding. Scarce. English language edition also issued in German 1898. This account is very well illustrated showing details of the environs in a way that is surely uncommon. Among the known photographers are Louis Blanc Alfred Bruand an optician named Fransioli and professor Hans Schardt 1858-1931 geologist of Montreux. / Emil Yung the upper cover gives the author's name as "Emile Yung" a different spelling was a professor at the University of Geneva. He was an early proponent in glacial climatic fluctuation which was not widely accepted at the end of the 19th century. He was the 1st Scotsman and only the 7th person to reach the peak of Mont Blanc in 1827. That he was a notable artist is proven by his sketches here. The 1828 1st edition was a quarto. " . the author has selected the present size octavo as more convenient than that in which it was originally published. In adapting the lithographic embellishments he has been enabled to improve them; and he has added two maps of extraordinary merit. Several additions have been made to the work -- Preface to the Second Edition." Presentation Copy inscribed by Auldjo to William Forsyth Grant probably Dr. Wm. F. Grant of Jamaica d.1834 which may explain the foxing.
