X-library with no numerals on spine emboss on title-page and withdrawn stamp. Scarce. <br/><br/>Mrs. Susan Lyman of Northampton Mass. married J. Peter Lesley the State Geologist of Pennsylvania and President of the American Institute for the Advancement of Science. Susan was the daughter of Judge Joseph Lyman of Northampton. The first printing of this memoir was limited to only 100 copies and titled MEMOIRS OF MRS. ANNE J. LYMAN in 1876. This edition was re-titled RECOLLECTIONS OF MY MOTHER: it omits some letters from the first edition but includes anecdotes and letters new to this edition. These are extensive New England memoirs concentrated on Northampton Mass. The Illustrations include an actual mounted photograph of a painted portrait of Judge Lyman. Boston Post article at front headlined: "End of a Famous Fraud - The Tichborne Claimant Arthur Orton Tells the Story of His Imposture" 1895 with adjacent article 1899 adhered to half-title: "Lunatic May Be Roger Tichborne." At rear from the New Bedford Evening Journal 1895: "A Tichborne Romance - A New and Plausible Claimant Appears in Australia - Story of Piracy and Madness." An account of the famous Tichborne fraud case and surrounding controversy in which "The Claimant" a man later discovered to be Arthur Orton came forward claiming to be the wealthy son of an English Baroness. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item Copac shows holdings only at BL Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons 1812-1883 was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church and argued against seceding from the church whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches. He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources" as the probable author of this work. John Lee, unknown
