Spanish imprint of the biography of James II of England published during the last of the Jacobite uprisings. Forced out of power in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and defeated in the subsequent battle of the Boyne by William of Orange the short reign of James II has an importance that reaches far beyond his three years in power. He died in 1701 in exile at the Palace of St. Germain in France and remains to be one of the most complex and intriguing persons of history. An ardent Roman Catholic his efforts to return England to the Catholic faith continue to resonate to this day in Northern Ireland. The Jacobite uprisings were a series of rebellions and wars in Great Britain and Ireland occurring from 1688 to 1746. The aim of the later uprisings was to return the House of Stuart and the descendants of James II to the throne of Great Britain after being deposed by Parliament during the Glorious Revolution. This biography of James II was printed in the last year of the major Jacobite uprising known as the The Forty Five. It was an intense time to show partisanship and effectively Jacobitism ended here as a serious political force in Britain. Bifolium. 2 unnumbered pages of printed text; title printed to verso of second leaf else second leaf blank. 9-3/4" x 7-5/8" Auction catalogue from the 1795 sale of 38 lots of the freehold estate owned by the late Charles Chaplin Esq. with manuscript prices and related notes in pencil and ink in a contemporary hand throughout. Occasional pencil notations and markings correct the printed acreage estimates of some lots. The Chaplins were members of the upper gentry and influential landowners in Lincolnshire. When the Louth Navigation -- a canal running from Louth in Lincolnshire to Tetney Haven at the mouth of the Humber -- was completed in 1770 Charles Chaplin managed to secure a 99 year lease of the tolls despite the terms of the canal's Act of Parliament limiting such leases to just seven years. The Louth Navigation Trust per the Louth Canal website notes that control and management of the tolls became "virtually hereditary" and led to considerable commercial opposition to the Chaplins and their political influence by the 1820s. "Baskerville printed three octavo editions of The Book of Common Prayer. The first which appeared in 1760 was set in long lines of Great Primer. There were two impressions one with and the other without a border round each page . cancelled title pages were substituted later in 1760 and in 1761. The second edition appeared later in 1760 . and two impressions were printed with and without borders. It was first published at 7s. 6d but in 1761 the price was raised to 8s.6d. One of Defoe's infamous pamphlets published under his second period of employment by the British government as a literary fifth columnist. Defoe would publish political or current event pamphlets either anonymously or posing as a Whig Tory Jacobite whom he said "my very soul abhors" DNB 738 or even a repentant double agent all while writing revolutionary works that lacked their bite incendiary news which proved incorrect or polemical pieces with unsound arguments. In short he worked a a pamphleteering agent of chaos all in the service of the government pacifying their erstwhile opponents. Defoe was seen as a renegade traitor and spy by a number of his contemporaries: "the little art he is truly a master of of forging a story and imposing it on the world." DNB 737. Mercurius Politicus was published in the years shortly before his fantastical Robinson Crusoe. The periodical ran from May 1716 to December 1720. This being the April 1717 issue. With "An Account of the Spaniards taking Twelve English Ships in the Bay of Campechy sic never printed before" as well as new appointments for the Bank and the East-India Company and updates on the Jacobite situation in Scotland. Sewn pamphlet lacking original paper wrappers. 211-273 pp. An ex-library copy with a punch-stamp dampstain and writing on the title page not affecting the text; library stamp on the verso of the title page.
