1876116309London Edinburgh and New York: T. Nelson and Sons 1876. Octavo original bevel-edged decorated brown cloth stamped in black gold and blind. First edition. Short stories written by A.L.O.E. after her arrival in India "to amuse and through amusement to instruct the people of the country of her adoption" author's preface. Charlotte Maria Tucker 1821-1893 was "one of the most successful writers of fiction for Victorian children. In 1848 Charlotte underwent a conversion to strict evangelicalism. Her father died in 1851 and she never married devoting herself to a life of useful spinsterdom. Tucker was active in helping the London poor before 1851 but did not publish any fiction until after her father's death. Her first work was the unabashedly didactic CLAREMONT TALES OR ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE BEATITUDES 1852. The last years of Tucker's life were extraordinary. At the age of fifty-four she went to India as a missionary having taught herself Hindustani and spent the last eighteen years of her life as a Zenana visitor i.e. calling on secluded Indian women. She was also an active educationalist converting the natives to Christianity as she taught them. She eventually died at Amritsar having long been weakened by illness in 1885. Some of her later work. has an Indian setting and flavor of narration." - Sutherland Victorian Fiction pp. 641-42. The correct first printing; early gift inscription dated 1877 on half title page. Very good- in stab sewn wrapper with Bowdoin College and the name of an early prior owner Ezra Abbot Jr. written across the upper edge of the front page. An octavo of 9 by 5 7/8 inches with the fore edge and lower edge rough cut and shallow chipping to the fore edge of the front page. Written in pencil is the author's name surrounded in brackets just above the word "Boston". The contents are spotted with foxing throughout but primarily in the margins. 117 pages of text. The author John Lowell 1769-1840 was a Massachusetts lawyer agriculturist philanthropist and a well known Federalist who wrote many pamphlets in support of his point of view. He was often at odds with the Democratic Party and published many unsigned pieces critical of President James Madison's efforts to build a standing army and navy and the War of 1812. Tanned scattered fox Good. <br/><br/> Dedicated "To Those Members of Congress Who Have the Sense to Perceive and the Spirit to Pursue the True Interests of their Country" the pamphlet attacks English invasions of American sovereignty. Referring to the British ship Leopard's assault on the Chesapeake the author says that "The attempt to search a public ship of war appears to us unjustifiable; and more especially so on our own coast." The author predicts correctly that the British would offer reparations and thus avoid war over the incident; and offers unflattering opinions on Jefferson-- "a schemer perpetually occupied with some strange out-of-the-way project"-- and Madison "a man of feeble mind." <br/>FIRST EDITION.
