He wrote numerous tracts all expressing faith in religion and the Crown. O'Leary was particularly distressed at the Dechristianisation of France during the Revolution. His works included 'Essay on Toleration' 'Loyalty Asserted of the Test Oath Vindicated'. He was also a wit and built the original St. Patricks' Church Soho Square.Written by Thomas R. England.Illustrated with a frontispiece of the subject.The first and only edition of this scarce work. In a half calf binding. The first UK edition of these unfavourable letters discussing England from American writer James Kirke Paulding. The first UK edition of this work. Smartly rebound in quarter calf with red cloth boards. Though published here anonymously under "A New England Man" these writings are credited to James Kirke Paulding an American writer and for a time the United States Secretary of the Navy. Comprising twenty-three "letters" this work was one of several responses from American writers to the unfavourable accounts given by English writers on their visits to the new nation. This reply retorts satirical criticisms of English customs and social behaviours and is one of five works Paulding wrote expressing his anti-British views. Bound in quarter calf with cloth boards. With renewed endpapers. Externally very smart with a couple marks to the boards and minor rubbing to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Referring to the British ship Leopard's assault on the Chesapeake the author says that "The attempt to search a public ship of war appears to us unjustifiable; and more especially so on our own coast." The author predicts correctly that the British would offer reparations and thus avoid war over the incident; and offers unflattering opinions on Jefferson-- "a schemer perpetually occupied with some strange out-of-the-way project"-- and Madison "a man of feeble mind." <br /> FIRST EDITION. Woodcut frontispiece. The publication is a report by the New Zealand Company on the conditions and the progress in the settlement of New Plymouth released only one year after the first settlers arrived from the West Country of England. The report was compiled through official dispatches and private letters many from Frederic Carrington 1807-1901 the principle surveyor for New Plymouth. Topics covered include the geography quality of the soil for agriculture profitable exports the native Maori population arrival of the settlers building of the community and the climate. The publication includes a few tables and charts a well as a small botanical illustration. The final section contains the prospectus of the New Zealand Company. There is a blank sample form for purchasing land in the New Plymouth area following the pagination. Two pages of publishers advertisements at the back discusses other publications pertaining to New Zealand emigration. Wrappers with light rubbing to extremities a small closed tear at the bottom edge of the front cover and a small stain at the tail of the spine. A very scarce miniature of this classic early 19th-century Christian booklet by Rev. Legh Richmond. Published by Rock Brothers & Payne who often referred to their miniatures as "Bijou" publications many of which were picture book souvenirs. In full morocco. First issued in tract form in 1814 by the Religious Tract Society and in the same year by the New England Tract Society in Boston this narrative had a remarkably wide distribution and influence. It tells of the religious experience of Elizabeth Wallbridge who Rev. Legh Richmond exchanged letters with and often visited. Wallbridge was the daughter of a dairy farm owner and became highly knowledgeable of the Bible upon her conversion. Legh Richmond 17721827 was a Church of England clergyman and writer. He is noted for tracts narratives of conversion that innovated in the relation of stories of the poor and female subjects. In full morocco. Externally very smart with mild rubbing to the extremities.
