The maps have attractive vignettes of sights within each county and references to the "Hundreds" and "Market Towns and Market Days". Some offsetting as is usual. This is a later state of "Complete Atlas of the English Counties" begun by Thomas Dix of North Walsham and completed by William Darton in 1822. Undated but the imprint on most maps reads "London: William Darton & Son 58 Holborn Hill" which was Darton's company name only between 1835 and 1837. Rebacked in calf with a new spine label. 181740606Boston: Cummings and Hilliard 1817. 52 pp. b/w plates. <br /><br />A great rarity and the primary document relating to the sea serpent of Cape Ann one of the most widely reported serpent sightings in American maritime history. First seen in Gloucester harbor in 1817 the creature reappeared off the coast in 1818 and 1819. Knowledgeable mariners and shore bound onlookers of all sorts reported sightings. A minister gave a detailed description of the monster which was reported in Boston papers. The Linnaean Society sent three objective observers to the scene and this is their report. In the spirit of strict scientific inquiry it cites about twenty depositions by locals provides information about a Norwegian sea snake to whom the mysterious serpent might be related then gives a detailed description of Scoliophis Atlanticus a baby sea serpent about three feet long killed upon the sea shore by some laboring people of Cape Ann. The account closes with another sighting from Long Island. The folding plate of the baby serpent opens to nearly thirty inches. Pages untrimmed. Referring to the British ship Leopard's assault on the Chesapeake the author says that "The attempt to search a public ship of war appears to us unjustifiable; and more especially so on our own coast." The author predicts correctly that the British would offer reparations and thus avoid war over the incident; and offers unflattering opinions on Jefferson-- "a schemer perpetually occupied with some strange out-of-the-way project"-- and Madison "a man of feeble mind." <br/>FIRST EDITION. Folio 35.1 cm 13.8". 260 pp. <br><br>Pickering's beautiful type facsimile of Robert Barker's 1604 edition a.k.a. the Hampton Court Book here in a Rivière binding. Charles Whittingham printed the work on handmade paper in black-letter type for Pickering who inspired by the printing of Aldus Manutius published in 1844 a series of six such facsimiles of important editions of the Book of Common Prayer each of which was => illustrated with wood-engraved initials and ornaments done by Mary Byfield and limited to => only 350 copies printed on paper with another two on vellum. The original title-pages were reproduced for each in => red and black and in the case of the present example the almanac pages likewise printed in red and black. Each book in this homage to important editions of the BCP was => an outstanding example of the Victorian-era Gothic design movement and Kelly notes that these volumes are "considered to be among the finest work of Whittingham."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed 19th-century dark brown morocco framed and panelled in single gilt and double blind fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons surrounding a central arabesque medallion; spine with raised bands gilt-stamped fleur-de-lis decorations in compartments and gilt-stamped publication information.
