1821011954Daily Advertiser Boston: 1821. 292 pages. "This report of the proceeding and debated in the Convention was made for the Boston Daily Advertiser by the editor of that paper who was a member of the Convention assisted by a gentleman of the bar to whom a seat was assigned by the President. The principal design was to furnish the public from day to day with an account of the proceedings through that paper; and to this design the report was necessarily made to conform. For a great part of the session the proceedings of each day were published in the morning paper of the following day; the reporters were in consequence obligated to prepare their reports in the greatest haste and incases in which the sittings continued to a great length of time and especially when two sittings were held on the same day and protracted to a late hour in the evening it has become necessary as well on account of he short interval for transcribing as from regard to the capacity of the paper to abridge the debate to a greater degree than they would otherwise have done. Many of the reported speeches are to be considered rather as abridgments than as full reports those of which were delivered. It was in general the object of the reporters to give the whole argument in substance without being scrupulously careful to adhere to the language of the several speakers. In this design however they may occasionally have failed; sometimes from not hearing distinctly- sometimes perhaps from not fully understanding the scope of the argument and sometimes from not being able through fatigue to give proper attention. For these reasons it will not be supposed that complete justice is done to the different speakers in point of elegance and propriety of expression of that the same degree of justice is done to each in regard to fullness and accuracy; but the reporters have endeavoured according to the best of their ability to give as full and accurate a report of the debates as circumstances would admit." This paragraph was the newspapers "Advertisement" or a disclaimer for any mis-reporting. This book is complete with the original boards that are heavily worn along the edges and the book would need to be rebound. The text has some foxing but in very good condition. Hard Cover. Tightly bound this copy has a two inch split at the top front gutter and darkening from water stain around the extremeties of the page tops unaffecting text. An uncommon and sought after accordian style fold-out view book with sixty 60 views on 12 panels that open all the way out. Individual views appear to a much greater number than 60 in total. Each panel measures about 5 5/8 inches by about 4 5/8 inches the covers about 6 by 5 inches. Faint old repaired tear on front paste-down probably by an improper opening at one time. French was a Cheshire County photographer from 1857 to 1898 with his studio in Keene. A stamp in the rear shows this booklet was sold at B. A. Woodcut frontispiece. The publication is a report by the New Zealand Company on the conditions and the progress in the settlement of New Plymouth released only one year after the first settlers arrived from the West Country of England. The report was compiled through official dispatches and private letters many from Frederic Carrington 1807-1901 the principle surveyor for New Plymouth. Topics covered include the geography quality of the soil for agriculture profitable exports the native Maori population arrival of the settlers building of the community and the climate. The publication includes a few tables and charts a well as a small botanical illustration. The final section contains the prospectus of the New Zealand Company. There is a blank sample form for purchasing land in the New Plymouth area following the pagination. Two pages of publishers advertisements at the back discusses other publications pertaining to New Zealand emigration. Wrappers with light rubbing to extremities a small closed tear at the bottom edge of the front cover and a small stain at the tail of the spine.
