Originally attributed to Charles I but according to Madan composed by John Gauden Bishop of Worcester who probably included some authentic writings of the King and may even have collaborated with him. The first edition was in print on the day of Charles I's execution on 30 January 1649 followed by many editions with various erroneous dates and publishing details. The Eikon reviews the course of the civil wars from the calling of the Long Parliament in 1640 to Charles's imprisonment at Carisbrooke Castle in 1647 and defends the King's policies. It is part political memoir and part spiritual autobiography presenting Charles as the defender of both Church and State. Written in a moving straightforward style in diary form the Eikon combines irenic prayers urging forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalism. The poem "Majesty in Misery" said to have been written by the King at Carisbrooke first appeared in the 1676 edition of Perinchief's Life of King Charles but this is the first edition of the Eikon in which it was printed. James II of England a.k.a. James VII of Scotland while fleeing to France dropped the Great Seal of the Realm into the Thames. In Parliament the question was discussed whether he had forfeited the throne or had abdicated. The present volume offers detailed arguments for the both but ultimately the latter designation was agreed upon and in a full assembly of the Lords and Commons it was resolved in spite of James's protest "that King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." This work was privately printed for Nicolas Chevalier who was a hobbyist and coin collector. A large proportion of Dutch print-making at the end of the 17th century focused on William III. An almost categorical personality cult surrounded the stadtholder-king. Among the print-makers Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. He is best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. De Hooghes 12 etchings of triumphal arches for this work are adaptations of plates in the works by Bidloo and Tronchin de Breuil published in 1691 and 1692. Adriaen Schoonebeek c. 1657- 1705 is often mentioned because of his appearance as witness for the prosecution in a court case against de Hooghe that formed the climax of a slanderous exchange of pamphets between Orangists and members of the Amsterdam faction in 1690. These animosities did not prevent re- employment of both engravers in executing plates for this Nicolas Chevaliers 1692 illustrated volume on numismatics and the life of King William. Rare. Worm damage to base and top of spine and to adjacent boards: a sprinkling of holes and small areas of loss at bottom front board over and near hinge c. 2 x 0.5cm. 8vo 11.8 x 17.5cm. All edges gilt. Original endpapers marbled in Wide Comb pattern. Endpapers cracked at gutters. Armorial bookplate to inside front board. Bibliographic and ownership inscriptions in pencil and pen to blank verso of front free endpaper: signature dated 1983 note 'Presented to the Parish Church of Cirencester by E. F. Salmon of the Diocese of Chichester' and calligraphic signature of 'William Armistead' dated 1756; Armistead also signed the recto of the rear free endpaper with date 1760. Text printed in double columns. Ruled in red throughout. Occasional mild foxing. The second edition of the first Latin translation of the 1662 BCP the first edition was published by Norton in 1669; this is a reissue. The 1662 BCP 'was to have been translated by John Earle John Pearson & John Dolben all of whom withdrew before the work was complete; edited by Jean Durel later Dean of Windsor & editor of French revision' Griffiths. The dedication to Charles II is signed 'J. D.' for Jean Durel. There were two variants of the 1670 printing; this has the imprint in 4 lines. Scarce. Griffiths 87.10. ~Robust packaging. 164024189<p><strong>1640 Thomas Cranmer 1ed 39 Articles Henry VIII English Reformation Legum RARE</strong></p><p>An extremely important first edition of '<em>Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum'</em> a work on ecclesiastical law when Henry VIII initiated the English Reformation and separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church and papal rule. Thomas Cranmer was closely tied to the king both politically and as a friend and was an important figure in the development of this work. This work established laws and regulations for the church including prayer music testimony excommunication judicial cases and political ties to the church. Other topics covered in this work involved domestic disputes such as divorce as well as more controversial topics including calling nonconformity to the church 'superstitions and idolatrous'. Hawkins II 537.</p><p>This 1640 reworking of the '<em>Thirty Nine Articles'</em> was translated out of the original English and into Latin by John Cheke and in 1553 was reportedly published in the name of King Henry VIII. This translation was the beginning of what would lead to Thomas Cranmer's being burned alive. Much of the contents of this compilation was used by John Foxe in his portrayal of Cranmer in his '<em>Book of Martyrs'</em>.</p><p>According to the British Museum Catalogue this work is</p><p>"A code of ecclesiastical law intended for use in the Church of England but never ratified by Parliament. Drawn up in 1552 by Commissioners headed by Thomas Cranmer.
