Sir Jonathan Trelawny Bishop of Bristol William Lloyd Bishop of St. Asaph William Sancroft Bishop of Canterbury was three of the Bishops on trial for seditious libel under King James II. From wikipedia: Sir Jonathan Trelawny 3rd Baronet 24 March 1650 – 19 July 1721 was a British Bishop of Bristol Bishop of Exeter and Bishop of Winchester. Trelawny is best known for his role in the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution which are sometimes believed to be referenced in the Cornish anthem The Song of the Western Men. He was born at Trelawne in the parish of Pelynt Cornwall the eldest surviving son of Sir Jonathan Trelawny 2nd Baronet. He was educated at Westminster School and then went to Christ Church Oxford at the start of the Michaelmas term of 1668 where he distinguished himself as a scholar. A staunch royalist he was ordained in 1673 and became a beneficed clergyman. He was appointed rector of South Hill on 4 October and of St. Ives on 12 December 1677 becoming Bishop of Bristol in 1685. He was one of the Seven Bishops tried for seditious libel under James II. Trelawny and the other bishops petitioned against James II's Declaration of Indulgence in 1687 and 1688 granting religious tolerance to Catholics and as a result he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of seditious libel. The bishops said that whilst they were loyal to King James II their consciences would not agree to allowing freedom of worship to Catholics even if it were to be within the privacy of their own homes as the Declaration proposed; thus they could not sign. Trelawny was held for three weeks before trial then tried and acquitted; this led to great celebrations with bells being rung in his home parish of Pelynt.1 William Lloyd was born at Tilehurst in Berkshire in 1627 the son of Richard Lloyd then vicar1 who was the son of David Lloyd of Henblas Anglesey. By the age of eleven he had understanding in Greek and Latin and somewhat of Hebrew before attending Oriel and Jesus Colleges Oxford later becoming a Fellow of Jesus College.2 He graduated M.A. in 1646. In 1663 he was prebendary of Ripon in 1667 prebendary of Salisbury in 1668 archdeacon of Merioneth in 1672 dean of Bangor and prebendary of St Paul's London in 1680 bishop of St Asaph in 1689 lord-almoner in 1692 bishop of Lichfield and Coventry and in 1699 bishop of Worcester.3 As Bishop of Lichfield he rebuilt the diocesan residence at Eccleshall Castle which had been destroyed in the Civil War.4 Lloyd was an indefatigable opponent of the Roman Catholic tendencies of James II of England and was one of the seven bishops who for refusing to have the Declaration of Indulgence read in his diocese was charged with publishing a seditious libel against the king.3 However he was acquitted in 1688 which was one of the events that lead to the fall of James II.citation needed He engaged Gilbert Burnet to write The History of the Reformation of the Church of England and provided him with much material. He was a good scholar and a keen student of biblical apocalyptic literature and himself "prophesied" to Anne Queen of Great Britain Robert Harley 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer William Whiston and John Evelyn the diarist. Lloyd was a staunch supporter of the Glorious Revolution.3 He lived to the age of ninety-one and died at Hartlebury Castle on 30 August 1717. He was buried in the church of Fladbury near Evesham in Worcestershire of which his son was rector and where a monument is erected to his memory with a long inscription.5 William Sancroft 30 January 1617 – 24 November 1693 was the 79th Archbishop of Canterbury2 and was one of the Seven Bishops imprisoned in 1688 for seditious libel against King James II over his opposition to the king's Declaration of Indulgence. Deprived of his office in 1690 for refusing to swear allegiance to William and Mary he later enabled and supported the consecration of new nonjuring bishops leading to the nonjuring schism. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT BIOGRAPHY OF EDWARD III WITH FINELY ENGRAVED PLATES. Edward III 1312–1377 was King of England from January 1327 until his death in 1377. He is noted for his military success and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous and unorthodox reign of his father Edward II. Edward III transformed the Kingdom of England into one of the most formidable military powers in Europe. His fifty-year reign is one of the longest in English history and saw vital developments in legislation and government in particular the evolution of the English Parliament as well as the ravages of the Black Death. He outlived his eldest son Edward the Black Prince and was succeeded by his grandson Richard II. Edward was crowned at age fourteen after his father was deposed. After a successful campaign in Scotland he declared himself rightful heir to the French throne starting the Hundred Years' War 1337–1453. Following some initial setbacks this first phase of the war went exceptionally well for England and would become known as the Edwardian War. Victories at Crécy and Poitiers led to the highly favourable Treaty of Brétigny 1360 in which England made territorial gains and Edward renounced his claim to the French throne. Edward was temperamental and thought himself capable of feats such as healing by the royal touch as some prior English kings did. He was also capable of unusual clemency. He was in many ways a conventional medieval king whose main interest was warfare but he also had a broad range of non-military interests. Admired in his own time and for centuries after. modern historians credit him with significant achievements. Complete copies of this great work on Edward are rare. Bishops etc. calendar printed in red and black printed marginalia; full title for the metrical Psalms musical scores. Texts in black letter Gothic. Contemporary reversed calf suede expertly rebacked retaining original backstrip with new gilt morocco lettering piece. Marginal dampstain and erosion at 20 leaves with slight loss at fore-margin calendar leaf C4 recto; mild dampstain at top gutter in later leaves; library stamp at bottom margin leaves N2/N3 in the metrical Psalms. Good or better complete copies of both works. Early edition of what still remains the authoritative version of the Book of Common Prayer comprising the official liturgy of the Anglican Communion and other historically related Christian churches. The first prayer book published in the wake of the English Reformation appeared in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI. That work was revised in 1604 during the reign of James I and again in 1662 during the reign of Charles II. While revision and supplementation has continued into the present era the 1662 edition of which the present copy is essentially an early reprint remains authoritative as the official prayer book of the Church of England. Despite the discrepancy in dates which appear on the title pages of the present edition the Book of Common Prayer and the Psalms of David comprise a single publication as noted at the collective title and confirmed by the signatures. The metrical Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins often bound with the Book of Common Prayer is a separate work. Provenance: Bookplate of the Royal Institution of South Wales noting the gift of Col. Gilt decor to board edges and turn-ins worn. Rubbing to boards. Corners bumped. Raised bands and ornate gilt decor compartments to spine rubbed and worn. Chipping and wear to top and base of spine. Outer front hinge almost fully cracked but hinge holding due to fairly recent sturdy cloth tape reinforcement on inside. Tape repair to inner rear hinge now perishing. Cracking to rear inner hinge and endpapers but hinge still firm. All edges gilt darkened. Marbled endpapers sometime added now worn with creasing to rear endpaper. Front marbled endpaper is missing the half not pasted to the boards. Large quarto 18 x 24cm. Three volumes with individual title pages all printed by John Hayes in 1683 bound together with 59 plates bound in. The plates are taken from 'The Life of our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. An Heroic Poem' by Samuel Wesley first published 1693 and illustrated with 60 copper plates of which all but one possibly the title or half-title were used for this volume. Only one plate is signed: St Matthew by Nicholas Yeates some small scenes of martyrdoms inserted in portraits of saints are initialled J. C. It is likely that Yeates and the more famous William Fairthorne 'recognised as the best native-born portrait engraver of the century' were part of a team which oversaw the 'extraordinary effort' of creating these dramatic and technically skilled 'complex traditional Catholic illustrations' see Hodnett 1978 'Francis Barlow: First Master of English Book Illustration'. First two volumes unpaginated. Small Nashdom Abbey inscription on inside front board. The Book of Common Prayer contains prefatory material including 'An Act for the Uniformity of Common Prayer' described in volume index but missing from copy described in ESTC. Small tear to the top of sig.B4 in Book of Common Prayer with small loss to text. Plate of 'St. Iacobvs Minor' was once partially stuck to preceding page with small loss to text and minor damage to image. Decorative initials. ~Additional notes: the marbled paper is plausibly late 17th-century but of an unusual straight herringbone design. John Hayes was apt to sell his publications gathered into bespoke volumes; we have been unable to locate another Common Prayer / New Testament / Psalter combination from his press. Darlow & Moule list two small 4to Bibles published by Hayes in 1683. They note that the first has a NT title page date of 1680 but don't mention the date of the second. Replacement grey and white marbled endpapers likely contemporary with binding. Endpapers reinforced with black cloth at gutters. Owner's bookplate printed in red & black to inside front board. Early or original blank front and rear endpapers front blank endpaper with owner's signature dated 1817. With additional engraved title page signed 'P. Williamson Scu.' dated MDCLXXXI. 'The Psalter or Psalms of David after the translation of the Great Bible .' has separate dated title page; register is continuous. Divisional title page on sig. 2O4r: 'The form and manner of making ordaining and consecrating of bishops priests and deacons according to the order of the Church of England' and on sig. 2S1r: 'A form of prayer with thanksgiving to be used yearly upon the fifth day of November'. Decorative initials head- and tail-pieces throughout. Text largely printed in black letter. Very minor dampstaining to top of pages at gutter from c. sig. 2D1 onwards and at base near gutter in metrical psalms from sig. L1r. Repaired tear to leaf C4 and small 3cm closed tear to leaf T5 both slightly affecting text. Leaves F2 & F3 repaired at edges with laid paper slightly affecting text on F3v. Kalendar printed in red & black. This was one of the last BCPs to be printed in the reign of Charles II and many references to the royal family throughout have been altered and annotated in an old hand on multiple occasions to reflect the accessions of William and Mary Anne and George I. Bound with 1680 edition of the metrical psalms: 'The Whole Book of Psalms. Collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others' with imprint 'Printed by J. M. for the Company of Stationers MDCLXXX'. As per ESTC this 'J. M.' was J. Macock. Repaired tear to metrical psalms leaf M1. minor impact on text. Metrical psalms printed largely in black letter double columns. BCP is ESTC R27758 Griffiths 1683 1. Collated A-C4 D6 E2 F-G4 H-2N6 2O4 2P-2Q6 2R4 2S6. Metrical psalms are ESTC R175365 collated A-M6 N4. Some slightly erratic pagination to metrical psalms starting at p. 59. A late Carolean edition of the BCP in solid 20th-century binding annotations reflecting its use through the reigns of the two final Stuart queens Mary and Anne and into the reign of George I. ~Robust packaging.
