Issued with a separate title page for A New Version of the Psalms of David by N. Brady and N. Tate H.D. Symonds 1796. In contemporary straight grained black morocco double fillet gilt borders on both boards gilt turn-ins gilt spine title all edges gilt marbled endpapers. Owner's name and address in neat ink on the front paste down. With an attractive contemporary dark red morocco bookplate: "Charlotte Godwin 1798" in gilt with double fillet gilt borders and decorative motif on the front pastedown. Corners bumped with moderate scattered foxing to the text pages else a beautiful fine copy with an interesting early American bookplate. The Godwin family was one of the first to settle in the Eastern Shore region of Virginia. Scarce. OCLC locates only one holding. Printed by C. Whittingham, for T. Heptinstall hardcover

The boards are worn but remain fair overall. The spine has 6 raised bands. The pages are marked by age and handling heavy foxing and age related markings throughout but the text remains legible. Heavy wear and rubbing scored and bumped circular marks to upper board. Gatherings not flush only traces of earlier gilt edge stain from second/ later binder's trimming. Off-setting from book label now removed to front endpapers. Good A well-handled extra-illustrated copy of the 1752 OUP Book of Common Prayer bound with Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins et al's The Whole Book of Psalms 1751 featuring 47 biblical and historical plates including 'Gunpowder Treason' 'The Martyrdom of King Charles the 1st' and 'The Restoration of Charles 2nd'. Ownership inscription 'Mrs Banks formerly Miss Ann Truman See Remarks on Mortality at the other end of this Book' to front free end-paper; 'Ethel Louise Maggs from my Aunt Mrs Rehnworth Nov 10th 104' to facing end-paper; printed extract on mortality pasted to end accompanied by leaf of manuscript commentary recalling a conversation between a Sophie Banks and Mrs Banks in 1834 who discussed the extract 'in a very clear audible manner' and then pasted it into this book before 'expiring a few hours afterwards'. Loss to head of spine corners bumped small areas of rubbing to boards. Contents clean a bright. A very good copy. An almost miniature authorised Book of Common Prayer which records a remarkable encounter between two women. Pasted to one of the final end-papers is a short extract from a newspaper on mortality taken from a sermon recorded in the Boston Gazette. On the next leaf is a short manuscript account from the nineteenth-century recalling a Mrs Banks likely the Mrs Banks n�e Truman whose initials are tooled to the binding on her deathbed reading the passage aloud to a Miss Sophie Banks before declaring that she would paste it in her prayer book. The manuscript authors supposes that Mrs Banks must have 'lost no time' in doing so as she died the morning after on 11 February 1834. The last record of what may have been its owners dying act which intimately shows a passage of sermonising being taken from print to an oral discussion between two women to its final resting place pasted to the end of this volume. Light soiling to foot of some gatherings small wormhole light scattered foxing from 2B1-2D1. A well presented folio Book of Common Prayer owned by a family of musicians to the crown. The book's former owner Prince Gregory was gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1740 to 1755 DNB William Gregory. The Gregorys had a storied family history as musicians to the crown Prince's ancestors included the composer William Gregory d. 1663 violinist to Charles I; Henry Gregory member of the King's band to Charles II; and the 'singing man' John Gregory. Less can be ascertained about the lives of Margarey and Mary Gregory who inherited their book from their relative Prince. An interesting family copy which warrants further research. Gladstone Family Copy. Harry and Virginia Walton were lifelong residents of Covington Virginia a small town in the Allegheny Mountains. Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College and Virginia was a graduate of the Lynchburg General School of Nursing. Although largely unknown to the general public the Waltons' reputation as collectors was widely respected in bibliophile and academic circles and items from their collection were exhibited at numerous colleges universities and art centers. After their deaths the original Walton collection was the subject of a series of very successful auctions in New York and London. John Field was an expert leather bookbinder associated with W.J. Each page beautifully engraved by John Sturt on silver plates. More than 130 engraved vignettes ranging in size from 41 mm x 55 mm to 84 mm x 55 mm numerous other smaller in-text vignettes initials head and tailpieces etc. Each page with elaborate engraved border. This edition also double red ruled. Volvelle present in original state on page V thus first state. Pages very clean with small occasional minor smudge.
