Spines just slightly sunned occasional light offsetting from plates a handful of plates with mild foxing but a fine copy extremely fresh and quite clean in an unworn extremely lustrous binding.<br/> <br/> Extra-illustrated and attractively bound this is an appealing copy of John Doran's vignettes of 19th century London life and the theatre. A prolific writer of Irish origin Doran 1807-78 worked as a private tutor then became a full-time author and journalist editing the "Church and State Gazette" and the "Atheneum." He produced many works usually historical biographies but also wrote extensively about the theatre a lifelong passion. He had tried his hand at playwriting as a young man and writes about the subject here with all the enthusiasm of a confirmed playgoer. The present volume is made up of essays nearly all originally published in the "Temple Bar Magazine" to which Doran regularly contributed. This periodical which ran from 1860 to 1906 was a leading literary magazine of the day publishing works by Wilkie Collins Arthur Conan Doyle Anthony Trollope and Robert Louis Stevenson among others. In our two handsome volumes here the editors have collected Doran's pieces about the theatre as the title suggests but also historical vignettes biographical sketches and commentaries on modern life and his own experiences told as the introduction puts it "with a sprightly wit." The present copy is enriched with a large number of attractive plates primarily portraits depicting figures discussed from actors to nobility together with occasional illustrations of unusual scenes and events such as Lord Nelson's funeral carriage. Contemporary green paper over brown cloth with a calligraphed title on the front in a floral frame and a drawing of a knight on horseback on the back board within the same floral frame blue speckled edges. With 12 large colourful ink drawings of knights on horseback depicting various British kings and nobles and a smaller ink drawing of knights in battle on the title-page. 1 1 blank 105 pp. Remarkable manuscript with beautiful illustrations and descriptions of the displays in the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London. As the armoury was engulfed by a large fire in 1841 the largest in the history of the Tower of London some of the depicted armour has been destroyed making the present manuscript a unique source on these objects.The work shows the armour of various British kings and nobles including that of Kings Edward I and VI Henry VI VII and VIII James II and V and military officer Horace Vere. They are all on horseback which is how the armour was displayed in the Tower of London at the time. The illustrations are beautifully hand coloured which gives a good impression of how the armour must have looked. The included text describes the objects and gives extensive background information on the kings and nobles they belonged to.The Royal Armouries in the Tower of London is one of the oldest museum exhibitions in the world. One of the earliest recorded visitors was in 1498 when entry was only by special permission. The visitors in the 16th century who wrote about their experience often called the display "disorderly" suggesting that little attention was paid to presentation at this time. This changed when the Stuarts reclaimed the throne in 1660. Two permanent public displays were set up to encourage visitors to marvel at the splendour of the British monarchy. One of the displays was called "The Line of Kings" which placed figures wearing the armour of former British kings on life-sized wooden horses. In 1825 The Line of Kings was relocated into a new building against the south side of the White Tower where it stayed until the fire of 1841. The present manuscript describes this display during this time period.The edges corners and hinges of the boards are somewhat scuffed with some loss of paper on the spine showing the brown cloth underneath. 18306501London: Dobbs of London 1830. Single sheet of stiff card hand-cut oblong oval 11 x 14 cm. embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens mourning cards writing papers visiting cards and envelopes adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence drawing writing and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolor. Early dealer's pencil note. Hand-cut into an oval not effecting text or image. Very good. Dobbs of London unknown

Oblong 12mo. measuring 12 x 18 cm. Original quarter maroon leather over gorgeous polished bevelled olive-wood boards bearing "Jerusalem" in black atop a deeply carved Jerusalem cross to the front board; like carving to the rear boards with Jerusalem printed in Hebrew characters to the centre; marbled edges and ivory silk-moire endpapers. Comprises of eleven beautifully arranged dried flower specimens mounted on stiff leaves most excepting two accompanied with their original remarkably well-preserved tissue-guards and individually captioned with their respective geographic origins e.g.: "Flowers from Mount Zion" "Flowers from the Mount of Olives" etc. Lightest wear to the leather spine else no other flaws noted to the extremities. Faint toning to the title page otherwise contents remain near-uniformly without blemish and with firm sound binding. A most lovely and unique period offering from the Holy Land. Rare to be offered in commerce in this edition and state. This edition unrecorded in WorldCat however nominally corresponds to OCLC #753636624 with notable differences in pagination and the number of specimens. See also OCLC #698494522. Rare indeed. <br/><br/>¶ Title leaf cites Biblical verse Matt. VI 28 29 30 which reads in part: "28 Why are you anxious about clothes Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. 29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 30 If God so clothes the grass of the field which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow will he not much more provide for you O you of little faith" Although no author nor compiler is given within the present offering corresponds to other similar such works attributed to German missionary and cabinet-maker Ferdinand Vester see references above who had moved to Jerusalem in 1853 to join the Swiss-German Mission. Accordingly the present work may have been the result of his collaboration with the efforts of the London Jews' Society's' "House of Industry" an Anglican missionary society located at Christ Church Jerusalem which offered vocational training to Jewish boys in various trades such as carpentry turnery shoemaking etc. The products produced by these boys would in-turn be sold to other missionaries or as religious souvenirs to passing tourists or those migrating to the West. Vester's son Frederick would carry on his father's business later marrying Bertha Spafford herself the daughter of the founder of the American Colony in Jerusalem Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. One albumen stereoview photograph sized 5.75 x 3.25 in. mounted on beige studio board sized 7 x 3.5 in. w/ photographer’s imprint and caption on the board VG exemplar from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. An unusually scarce original albumen stereoview photograph capturing the prize-winning stand of decorative art glass offered by the famed Victorian china and glass manufacturer’s W.P. & G. Phillips located on Oxford Street & New Bond Street. They catered to a well-to-do class of clients and their displays offered intricate and beautifully made designs. The Great London Exhibition of 1862 emulated the original 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition featured over 28000 participating vendors and set on the present site of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in London’s South Kensington. Woodward 1836-1894 first established himself as a photography dealer and decorative arts and glass dealer in Orange MA before locating his firm in Rochester in 1862 where continued operating under his own imprint before becoming director of the Union View Co. in 1882 producing landscapes and architectural views. Ownership signature on front endpaper of a William John Lafferty Belfast dated 1866. <br /> <br /> A significant work infrequent in commerce. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates. This is a collection of the Illustrated London News that was probably used to promote subscriptions. The date on the tile page indicates 1852 but the actual issues seem to run from December 7 1844 to July 5 1845. This volume contains about twenty issues during that period but does not include every issue. In some of these promotional collections some issues are reprinted but the reprints are from 1852. A couple of pages are missing but the issues seem mostly complete. This volume was put out about ten years after the Illustrated London News began publication in May 1842. It contains some very interesting news and illustrations including an illustration of an 'electric telegraph' in the April12 1845 issue a very young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert engraving at a costume ball in the June 7 1845 issue and a tennis match in the February 1 1845 issue.
