A remarkably scarce example of polemical commercial lobbying literature issued in an attempt to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions in the House of Commons relating the grievances of the Company of Bakers regarding a recent act of parliament that had implemented exorbitant fines for the sale of underweight or improperly marked loaves. To illustrate their indignation the company relate the experience of Thomas Cave who 'Paid Forty Shillings on Account of a six penny Loaf Four Days old which a Common Soldier's Wife Bought of him and had taken a Piece out of the Loaf and then the Husband went and Informed against the Baker for want of Weight'. A speech at the House of Commons against the monopoly of the Bank of England. <br> In 1697 Parliament had extended the charter for the Bank of England with additional conditions proposed by the bank. One of the key proposals was to stipulate that no other bank or entity akin to the nature of a bank be established in England; ensuring the legal monopoly of the Bank of England. The Nine Year's War had strengthened the newly founded Bank who issued extensive loans to the Government; ensuring that neither could be mutually separated. In this pamphlet the author warns that the Bank of England might become a monopolistic trader of credit due to its low interest rates. The tradesmen and merchants of London vehemently protested against the Bank because they saw it as anticompetitive goliath arranged against their interests. The Bank of England had previously overtaken the Land Bank as the premier trader of land in England. This and the power given by the Government to issue Exchequer notes is the preeminent case against the Bank of England's monopoly. The War of Spanish Secession further increased the government's reliance to the Bank of England who issued it millions of pounds of debt. As a result Chancellor Robert Harley was forced to seek new ways to improve the national finances. This would lead to the creation of the South Seas Company and growth of joint stock companies. Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York common notes including the dominical letters golden number and religious festive days for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral a calendar an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign a list of mayors and sheriffs 1767-1788 one page listing bank holidays and an overview of the Royal family King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase.
