First American edition of biographies of Arthur Wellesley Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel reprinted from the London Times which were originally published upon their death. These reprints are accompanied with the leading articles from the same journal expressive of the occasion. Spine sunned chipping along top of spine 2 " tear along hinge endpapers foxed waterstain mark on one corner of book. Very scarce solid copy excellent for reading. Good condition. D. Piccolo difetto sulla sguardia anteriore peraltro ben conservato. Pubblicato nel 1813 «The Giaour - A Fragment of a Turkish Tale» è il primo dei racconti turchi di Byron e conobbe un grande successo in patria e nel resto d'Europa sull'onda degli entusiasmi filellenici e dell'orientalismo romantico. La novella inizia infatti lamentando le sorti della Grecia sotto il dominio ottomano e l'infelice schiava Leila crudelmente giustiziata dal turco Hassan fu dai contemporanei considerata come personificazione dell'Ellade. Nel poemetto Byron accennò tra l'altro per la prima volta al tema del vampirismo: la vendetta dell'eponimo «giaurro» termine dispregiativo usato nell'Impero Ottomano per indicare gli infedeli lo condannerà secondo uno dei narratori a vagare per l'eternità mutato in vampiro. L'opera ebbe numerose traduzioni italiane a partire dal 1818 prima di questa nella Collezioncina Diamante di Hoepli. Andrea Maffei poeta e librettista nativo della Val di Ledro fu tra i più prolifici ed affermati traduttori letterari italiani del XIX Secolo lasciando una fondamentale impronta sulla ricezione e diffusione del romanticismo in Italia anche grazie al frequentatissimo salotto letterario tenuto dalla moglie Clara nella residenza milanese; popolari le sue traduzioni degli Idilli di Gessner del teatro di Schiller di Goethe di Heine e di Byron autore che iniziò a tradurre nei primi anni ’50 e di cui si occupò tutta la vita licenziando quasi ottantenne le versioni di Lara Mazeppa e di questo Giaurro. 188072615Germany: c.1880. Attractively framed black and white lithographs of the Albert Memorial and Cleopatra's Needle. The Albert Memorial is situated in Kensington Gardens directly to the north of the Royal Albert Hall. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved husband Prince Albert who died of typhoid in 1861. Cleopatra's Needle is the popular name for each of three Ancient Egyptian obelisks re-erected in London Paris and New York City during the nineteenth century. The London and New York ones are a pair while the Paris one comes from a different original site where its twin remains. From the publication entitled: New Album of London.
