A printed bill of fare for Vauxhall Royal Gardens a dining establishment within the walls of Vauxhall Gardens the London pleasure garden founded in the mid-17th Century and originally named New Spring Garden. For two centuries it was one of the leading venues for public entertainment in London and featured tightrope walkers hot-air balloon ascents concerts and fireworks. The bill of fare features refreshments a chicken plate of collared beef tart cheesecake heart cake Shrewsbury cake plate of olives pot of stout and a pair of wax lights. Salads seem to have been a thing but elements lemon lettuce cucumber cruet of oilwere offered separately. "The Pastry and Confectionery are furnished by Mr. Farrance." The wine list offers Port Sherry Bucellas Lisbon Moselle Teneriffe Madeira Sauterne Barsac Claret Old Hock Champagne Burgundy etc. Handwritten on the bill is the specific date the Box No. or table and waiter's name and the costs and total of the meal. One of the ubiquitous Victorian "Aunt Louisa's London Toy Book" series this with illustrations by Henry Stannard an artist best known for sporting paintings. In yellow pictorial wrappers with titling in red gray and black and elaborate decorations as well as an image of poor Cock Robin heading to a watery grave. Text printed on the verso of the front wrapper and the recto of the rear with advertisements on the rear panel. With 16 unnumbered pages and four full page colored illustrations as well as a splendid double page illustration at the center fold. There is some soiling but overall a bright and attractive copy. There is a faintly penned gift inscription at the top of the front panel and just the beginning of separation at the bottom of the covers. Very Good binding. Frederick Warne & Co unknown books

This collection of proceedings by the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee documents the Corporation of London's efforts to ensure the safety of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground as the Corporation's lease was nearing its end Christmas 1867. Bunhill had been a burying ground of Nonconformists and other denominations since the sixteenth century. With the work of the committee the Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1867 preserving the burial ground as an open landscaped space with seating gardens and the restoration of some of it most noteworthy monuments including John Bunyan Daniel Defoe and William Blake. The appendix contains a reprint of a rare tract from 1717 "Inscription on the Tombs in the Dissenters' Burial Place near Bunhill Fields." Some wear to edges of binding else fine. unknown books

While the book does not contain pictures each piece and artist is described to detail along with the identity of the donor. With complete index.<br/><br/>Bookplate reveals that this book is from the collection of Dennis Wheatley 1897-1977 a best-selling English author of thrillers many with an occult or "black magic" theme e.g. The Devil Rides Out 1934. He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself. 18306501London: Dobbs of London 1830. Single sheet of stiff card hand-cut oblong oval 11 x 14 cm. embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens mourning cards writing papers visiting cards and envelopes adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence drawing writing and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolor. Early dealer's pencil note. Neatly rebacked; some spotting and soiling to boards spine cloth slightly dulled. Endpapers soiled with faint marginal tidemark to preliminary leaves but in all a tight complete Very Good copy. Ownership signature on front endpaper of a William John Lafferty Belfast dated 1866. <br/><br/>A significant work infrequent in commerce. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates. The Transactions the leading horticultural journal of its time contains valuable contributions on fruits and vegetables particularly peaches strawberries apricots cherries and gooseberries by T. A. Knight George Lindley James Barnet and Robert Thompson and others. William Hooker no relation to Sir William served as botanical artist to the Horticultural Society now the Royal Horticultural Society from 1812 until he retired in 1820. The present work includes a good selection of plates taken from his fruit paintings which according to Blunt and Stearn reveal him to have been "one of the greatest pomological artists of all time" The Art of Botanical Illustration p. 233. Of the engraved plates 16 are color plates a combination of stipple engraving with hand coloring mostly of fruit but for "Monopsis Conspicua" "The Large Vegetable Marrow" and a beautiful folding plate of "The Double-Sweet-scented Chinese Peony." Uncolored plates are mostly of plans and structures but for a couple of plants. Many of the b&w plates have the engravers' and artists' names while only one of the color plates does "Monopsis Conspicua" printed and engraved by W. Hooker after R. A. Salisbury. However according to Gordon Dunthorne William Hooker no relation to Sir William did the majority of the plates in the first five volumes "including many fine fruit plates which outnumber those of flowers . the fruit prints in particular comparing with the best of Hooker's work." Quarto. 28 x 21.5 cm. 2 XXIV VIII 186 185-186 187-369 372-410 10 28 pp. Disbound: Bookblock is sound with old marbled boards detached yet present but lacking the ffep. and backstrip. Some light foxing to engraved title-page and a few of the other b&w plates with offsetting to facing text pages; otherwise the plates and text are quite clean. Ex library with minimal markings only a cancelled bookplate on front pastedown and a blind embossed seal on p. 1 of text and none to plates. A complete copy in very good condition that needs to be rebound. Published between 1807 and 1848 the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London are esteemed for the very high standard of their production especially in their plates and for their interesting and useful content.
