English Dissenters: Protestant Christians who disagreed in opinion belief and other matters and separated from the Church of England in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many emigrated to the "New World" especially to British colonies the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America and also to Canada. It is considered by many that English dissenters played a key role in the spiritual development of the United States. This spirit of independence initially born of the determination to achieve independence in conduct of religious observance gave rise eventually to the American Revolutionary War of 1775 and subsequent independence in 1776. A fascinating tract about the election of London's sheriffs written during the Exclusion Crisis in the late seventeenth century. This was a period of intense political turmoil between Whigs and Tories over whether Charles II's brother James Duke of York should be excluded from succeeding to the throne because he was a Catholic. VERY RARE print series illustrating the history of the ascension to the throne of WILLIAM III 1650-1702 and MARY II 1662-1694. The series begins with the Seven Bishops being brought to the Tower of London with a view up the Thames followed by the birth of the Prince of Wales on 10 June 1688 through the entrance of William and Mary into The Hague on 5 February 1691. The series contains several scenes devoted to the festivities surrounding their coronation in London on 11 April 1689. This set of the engravings correspond to Landwehr and appear to have been issued in its original binding without the text; the title-page may have been removed or was not included. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine engraved plates of which eight are folding Apparently lacking one plate small octavo pp iv xxxv i 43iii 4 35-309 vii much of the text rather browned and age-toned a fair few signs of use though all very tight the first fifty pages or so have a fair anount of pencil notes and underlinings see illustration with a little more on pages 179-199 contemporary calf rubbed and cracked but soundrebacked with a fairly recent calf spine raised bands new endpapers apparently by Bayntuns. The folding plates are rather worn and creased occasionally frayed at the margins; two have old sellotape repairs and one is rather badly torn across but without loss. The pagination is erratic and appears incorrect but it actuall ties in exactly with the contents pages at the rear. In this copy "An advertisement of J. Evelyn Esq." as mentioned by Blanche Henrey is bound immediately after the title page. LACKING ONE PLATE. Quintinie was in charge of the royal fruit and vegetable gardens under Louis XV. "His book shows his deep knowledge of every aspect of kitchen gardening" - Taylor. George London and Henry Wise were garden designers and nurserymen and formed one of the most important garden design practices in the history of British gardening.
