Hand-colored engraved map by Sidney Hall dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen overall 30 5/8 x 20 7/8 inches folding to 7 x 4 3/8 inches. In original publisher's board slipcase pink printed title label on front. This large and handsome map spans the entire city of London and its environs drawn as its cover label reports from a new survey "including the actual and intended Improvements." At furthest left are Hyde and Regents Parks and at furthest left is Greenwich Park. The map shows as far north as Islington and Hackney and as far south as Deptford and Greenwich. The Thames is depicted horizontally across the map and the hand-coloring demarcates various areas and features such as central London defined by a red border the major streets done in pink the parks and water in green. Yellow is reserved only for Regent Street. Five bridges are shown from west to east: Vauxhall Westminster Waterloo Blackfriars and London. Clearly shown from top left and wandering southeast to the Thames is Regent's Canal the large project that had reached completion just one year before this map's publication. Printed at bottom is an alphabetical list of streets with a key to their positions on the map. With contemporary provenance signed by "M. Artist is John Doyle DB with his circular embossed seal in lower left corner. Doyle experienced great success with his political cartoons using the new medium of lithography. His caricatures were mostly faithful likenesses of his subjects. His sons included the illustrator James William Edmund Doyle and painter/illustrator Richard Dicky Doyle. After visiting King William IV on May 8 Lord Grey Prime Minister and Lord Brougham Lord Chancellor were not offered victuals by the King and so get some mutton chop at a posting house in Hounslow. Grey is disconsolate Brougham cheerful holding a chop speared on a fork saying "My Lord you don't eat your chops I have already placed six in Schedule A. & am about to discuss a seventh while you have scarcely got thro' one come cheer up all will be well tomorrow." Grey responds by noting his fear of omens upon entering the post house. Slight rubbing to vertical portions of the picture frame. Thos McLean unknown books

1865443721865. <p>City of London Truss Society. Archive of 65 documents including autograph letters signed mostly to John Colley Taunton d. 1858 printed reports and other ephemera. 1822-65. Some documents soiled or dampstained a few with tears but overall good to very good. Calendar of the archive included.</p> <p> The City of London Truss Society a highly successful British charitable organization began operating in 1807 and continued well into the twentieth century Sir Geoffrey Keynes the well-known surgeon and bibliographer served on the Society's medical staff in the 1930s. A notice published in the Philosophical Magazine in 1813 describes the genesis of the Society:</p> <p> "From the great number of persons among the laboring poor who were afflicted with hernia and for whose relief no adequate provision existed on the 14th of October 1807 Dr. Squire Dr. Herdman John Taunton the Rev. H. G. Watkins James Horton Michael Bartlett Joseph Atkinson John Middleton John Gardner and John Whitford met at the City Dispensary and formed themselves into a Society 'for the relief of the ruptured poor throughout the Kingdom the City of London Truss Society'" Philosophical Magazine 43 1813: 316. </p> <p> John Taunton 1769-1821 surgeon to London's city dispensary was appointed the Truss Society's first surgeon; after his death his son John Colley Taunton took over the post remaining there until his own death in 1858. By 1813 the Society was treating nearly 2000 patients annually; by Taunton's death in 1821 this number had increased to over 3500; and by the end of the nineteenth century the Society was employing three surgeons and seeing over 10000 patients per year. </p> <p>The archive we are offering contains 65 documents of which all but seven are handwritten. Of the 58 handwritten documents the majority are letters to and a few from John Colley Taunton. The most notable correspondent represented here is physiologist and surgeon Benjamin Collins Brodie 1783-1862 whose letter to Taunton advises him on a urinary tract infection in a patient. Four of the letters are from surgeon William Kingdon 1789-1863; two of these recommend poor patients to the Society's care. 31 letters are from Samuel Cartwright 1789-1864 a dentist and one of the vice-presidents of the Truss Society; nearly all of his letters have to do with donations to the Society and several include the exact amounts given. Another group of letters is from Mary Tanner presumably a patient; two of these letters include prescription notes in what is presumably J. C. Taunton's hand. Also included in this archive are three of the Society's annual reports for the years 1862-1864; a printed subscription card; and two printed invitations from the Society addressed to Walter K. While the book does not contain pictures each piece and artist is described to detail along with the identity of the donor. With complete index.<br/><br/>Bookplate reveals that this book is from the collection of Dennis Wheatley 1897-1977 a best-selling English author of thrillers many with an occult or "black magic" theme e.g. The Devil Rides Out 1934. He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself. One of the ubiquitous Victorian "Aunt Louisa's London Toy Book" series this with illustrations by Henry Stannard an artist best known for sporting paintings. In yellow pictorial wrappers with titling in red gray and black and elaborate decorations as well as an image of poor Cock Robin heading to a watery grave. Text printed on the verso of the front wrapper and the recto of the rear with advertisements on the rear panel. With 16 unnumbered pages and four full page colored illustrations as well as a splendid double page illustration at the center fold. There is some soiling but overall a bright and attractive copy. There is a faintly penned gift inscription at the top of the front panel and just the beginning of separation at the bottom of the covers. Very Good binding. Frederick Warne & Co unknown books

18306501London: Dobbs of London 1830. Single sheet of stiff card hand-cut oblong oval 11 x 14 cm. embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens mourning cards writing papers visiting cards and envelopes adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence drawing writing and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolor. Early dealer's pencil note.
