Attractive contemporary full dark-green morocco with decorative gilt borders incorporating crown devices; the spine ruled in gilt and with floral devices in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Pages edges red. Manuscript title page with decorative ink border. 61pp. of neat calligraphic manuscript text with ruled borders the book completely full. Nineteenth-century pencil note to the second front blank "Chef-d'oeuvre d'ecriture. Aide-memoire pour se rememorer des phases du pouvoir de l'Autriche en Italie" "Masterpiece of writing. Memo aid to remember phases of Austria's power in Italy". The binding firm with a little chipping to the spine ends and rubbing to the spine and joints wear to the bottom corners and a few small scuffs to the lower board. The contents with toning to the endpapers and the odd minor mark are otherwise in very good order throughout. An appealing late eighteenth-century French manuscript written in a fine calligraphic hand chronicling the key events in German and Central European history from 691 to 1779. Most likely produced for personal study or instruction the gilt crown devices on the rather handsome binding potentially indicate aristocratic ownership. [Original manuscript]. unknown

Engraved chart listing the noble families and clergy of Germany published by the Amsterdam publisher Pieter Schenk 1660-1718. The chart includes 15 large coats of arms of kings bishops dukes and counts 20 smaller coats of arms of 10 abbots and 10 abbesses and 23 of bishops. Also included are lists of the nobility of different German provinces with a small map of Germany at the bottom of the chart depicting the provinces.Margins slightly thumbed and with a minor reinforcement and restoration of the fold on the back otherwise in very good condition.l Koeman p. 120 map 32; Muller Historieplaaten 3031 XXXIV unknown

Woodcut illustrated initials throughout; engraved headpiece at the beginning of each volume / section. Bound in full calf with spines gilt in five compartments; rubbing and wear labels chipped; head and tail caps are carefully restored including some gilt lines which are renewed; corner tips of boards are repaired. Marbled fly-leaves are lacking in the first volume. Notes are written in an early hand on front blank leaf of volume I. Title page is printed in red and black. Interior is generally clean with occasional mild foxing soiling and wear; one word of marginalia is written in an old hand on p.43 of volume I. Veit Ludwig von Seckendorf 1626-1692 German historian and jurist. His most important work "Commentarius historicus et apologeticus de Lutheranismo sive de Reformatione" first published at Leipzig 1692 in 3 vols is an extensive history of the Reformation and the Thirty Years War which is still valuable to historians today. Seckendorf both utilized and quoted from many primary source manuscripts and printed materials found in the libraries of the Saxon princes. His work was in part an answer to the Jesuit Louis Maimbourgs "Histoire du Lutheranisme" published Paris 1680. The first German translation of Seckendorfs history revised - shortening the lengthy quotations from Maimbourg was printed in 1714. A second German edition here listed edited with additions by Benjamin Lindern appeared in 1755. According to the scholar L.W. Spitz Lindnern dropped Seckendorfs complex arrangement which followed Maimbourg and reduced the work "to a more continuous narrative." See L.W. Interior is generally clean; pages are mildly age toned with an occasional touch of light foxing; a couple of faint corner creases present; a small marginal tear on p. 157 of volume 2 is neatly sealed. Some spots of light staining present on outer edge of text block. Charles Burney 1726-1814 was an English musician and composer. In 1773 he was elected a member of the Royal Society. According to Andrew Deakins Musical Bibliography "The tour of which this book is the fruit was commenced in July 1772. Dr. Burney visited Brussels Antwerp Frankfort Munich Vienna Prague Dresden Leipzig Berlin and many other cities forming friendships with the Bach family J.A. First edition of this fascinating 18th-century history of the town on the Neckar River and the ruin of the famed Heidelberg Castle. Kayser details the destruction wrought on the city and the castle during the Thirty Years War the Reformation and destruction of much of the castle by the French armies in 1693 and 1694. After the 1697 Treaty of Ryswick marked the end of the War of the Grand Alliance Carl Philipp III installed Perkeo of Heidelberg his court jester in the castle to watch over the wine stock and much of the city was reconstructed in the Baroque style. The famous Heidelberg Tun a gigantic wine barrel in the Heidelberg Castle Cellars depicted here in the engraving by Kolb was the third Fass such giant barrel and was built by Carl Philipp in 1728. Contemporary inked ownership inscription of James Wallis to title page dedication page verso of first plate alongside later inscription of Stephen Cummins head of first leaf of text and above caption title of Vol. II; with his occasional marginal annotations primarily recording for easy reference the placement of plates within the volume. An interesting anthology of translations of selected German articles from various late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth century periodicals including numerous by G. Leibniz mathematics mechanics logic philology and Philipp Jacob Sachs a Lewenheimb alchemy medicine. Initially published in parts under the title Acta Germanica or The literary memoirs of Germany &c. London 1742 the first collected two-volume edition appeared in 1743 printed by and for the editor Godfrey Smith. In his dedication to the fourth edition of The laboratory; or School of Arts 1755 Smith notes that he has suspended continuation of Acta Germanica for want of encouragement but hopes 'not only to finish the Second Volume but likewise to compleat my Design'. However no material appears to have been added after 1750 and the present work is a re-issue with cancel title page of the original sheets of Acta Germanica. Volume II is substantially smaller than volume I and has no index or title page but the text concludes with 'Finis'. First Edition of the famous criminal code of Maria Theresa which redefined torture as "a subsidiary means of eliciting truth". Torture could be applied to obtain confessions only in cases where condemnation would have involved capital or severe corporal punishment. A remarkable publication including graphic illustrations of instruments and methods of torture thumb-screws stocks racks burning candles leg vices winches the Viennese shoe with detailed and precise instructions on their use. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th Edn. this illustrated edition was suppressed by Prince Kaunitz chancellor of state and advisor to the Empress a few days after its appearance. Somewhat later beige paper over stiff boards soiled rubbed short crack at the top of the front hinge edges slightly defective octagonal manuscript-lettered title label on the front cover. <p> Only Edition first issue of these lively views of the renowned Bavarian university town of Altdorf on the cusp of the Enlightenment. Founded in 1526 as a high school raised to an academy in 1578 and a university in 1622 Altdorf was "one of the first if not the first university in Germany dedicated to the serious study of the experimental sciences" Irsay tr. The school's graduates include imperial field marshals Wallenstein and Pappenheim composers Briegel and Pachelbel and the polymath Leibniz. The album has been variously dated from 1681 to about 1720.<br /> Johann Martin Trechsel 1661-1735 wrote the introductory text. He describes sketching the town and its environs over a four-year period and shares characteristic aspects of his subject before expatiating upon each plate's contents - identifying owners of specific houses and gardens explaining local civil and academic customs enumerating the university's buildings dating the addition of specific features recording inscriptions highlighting architectural features and discussing important patrons and professors.<br /> The suite begins with the town's skyline and outer walls as seen from the northwest the road from Nürnberg then the market square the orphanage chancery Church of St. John inside and out and town hall during a festival. The university is the subject of the rest of the etchings starting with the general assembly hall. THE ANATOMICAL THEATER HAS WALL-MOUNTED HUMAN VENATION DIAGRAMS. ANIMAL SKELETONS FILL THE MEZZANINE. THE FULLY FURNISHED CHEMICAL LABORATORY est. 1683 follows. Both rooms are fully treated in the text.<br /> Three plates show THE LIBRARY AND ITS COLLECTION OF NATURAL CURIOSITIES the physic garden and green houses of exotic and medicinal plants and the theology lecture hall. The final three etchings depict student life - their recreation facilities wash basins desks and study carrels the dining hall servers carrying food students raising toasts. and the private fencing academy.<br /> I have located two examples in the U.S. both defective.
