The Rhein-Gold The Walkyrie Siegfried and Dusk of the Gods preceded in English only by the privately printed individual librettos a hastily gathered abridged assembly of 238 pages total published to secure copyright. Our edition issued to accompany Wagner's conducting of the cycle in London has all 4 parts with all the stage directions and dialogue. Contemporary half cloth marbled boards printed paper label near fine complete with the volume half-title the 4 half-titles for the individual parts and the coda To Richard Wagner. Ex-Edw. Schuberth with his company's oval stamp to the general half-title. The source was the prodigious German epic poem Das Nibelungen Lied anonymously written by an unknown massive-aggressive in the 12th century about events in the 5th or 6th. It recounts the deeds of Siegfried the Dragon Slayer the Germanator his betrayal and murder and the revenge of his wife Kriemhilda the real heroine. In 1816 Professor of philology Karl Lachmann began a careful study of the 11 known more or less complete manuscripts then ordered them chronologically collated corrected translated and amalgamated them to finally produce the version in Middle High German. It remains a foundational pillar of European literature but it was Wagner 1813-1883 who transformed it into an opera the only venue where people die of love by first revisiting Lachmann then brooding upon it and finally escalating the dramatic harmonic and most famously the instrumental forces beyond any of his predecessors setting a new and basic though often ignored challenge for his successors. The Ring Cycle exemplifies his theories and it's conjoining with national epic poetry was the appropriate agent for a masterwork. Schott unknown books

Original thread in good shape holding an intact textblock but both covers are detached fragile edgeworn and are scribbled-on by an untalented child; a previous owner not ourselves has attempted erasure. The acidic leaves are very fragile and chipped. Appears to be complete down to the ads a poor but honest copy. An early Harr Wagner effort; masthead states "thirty-third year" he must have bought into it. Ecclectic topics: a wood-engraved portrait of journalist G.A.H.Sala Early German Lit by a professor a grotesque mockery of wine-making in the California foothills use a dead body a fiction by Wagner called "Nun or Wife" an essay on "Work and Wages of Women in San Francisco" by one Alice Dennison. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. "Not only are the plates technically interesting but three are from drawings by Henry Alexander Ogden" - McGrath. The result of this trichromatic chromolithographic technique while somewhat blotchy in appearance probably considerably lowered the cost of printing such a plate. Wagner's work was published in a one-volume edition which contained forty-two plates including seventeen of the U.S. Navy with accompanying text. Manuscript notebook composed by Ida Sylva Wagner a young woman training to become a teacher at the Bloomsburg State Normal School now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania between 1888-1889. Comprised of 88 pages in ink and pencil blending lecture and reading notes with what appear to be Ida's own drafts of analytic essays practice lesson plans and examination questions. Quarter cloth over marbled boards measuring 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Shelf-wear to extremities and hinges tender but holding. Text block overall tight with mild toning not affecting text. Wagner's ownership signature and school information on front paste-down; second ownership signature along with Wagner's later teaching location on rear paste-down. In Very Good condition overall considering its daily class use and apparent usage as a reference guide during Ida's later teaching career.<br/><br/>Established in 1869 the Bloomsburg State Normal School aimed to provide rigorous teacher training to ensure that regional educators could "teach the youth elements of classical education" Bloomsburg University. State census records show that she would have been 22 at the time of this class and that she later moved to Luzerne County to work as a teacher after graduation. This notebook rigorously documents her work in an advanced Practical Teaching course which provided pedagogical methodology as well as requiring students to put methods into practice by designing usable teaching materials. Ida's notebook is roughly divided into sections with blanks separating each; and they include practical notes including Introductory Consideration Foundations and Principles Length of Recitation Object Lessons and Plan of Lessons as well as sample content for lessons such as Primary Reading Primary Numbers and Rules of Grammar. In her hand Ida reflects on the importance of theory and practice noting "The powers of the child which demand the teacher's attention are the physical the intellectual the moral and the spiritual.before knowing can take place there must be something to know and the thing to be known must affect its appropriate sense." This guiding principle clearly shapes the class and Ida's notes show that she is being trained in the "something to know" for example the 15 pages of vocabulary pronunciations and definitions as well as the "affecting its appropriate sense" for example the 46 initial pages on methods for shaping appropriate lessons. <br/><br/>A dense resource with research possibilities including but not limited to the fields of history of pedagogy history of American higher education women's education and employment and gender studies. Happily though the complete book is bound-in including the original light-green wrappers which show minor soiling and creasing along the edges. Fuld p. 465; Deathridge Geck and Voss WWV p. 402; Klein p. 51. <br>The present historic copy was inscribed on the occasion of Wagner's conducting portions of Götterdämmerung in concert in Vienna in advance of the the complete opera's Bayreuth premiere in 1876. The publication of this piano vocal score preceded the full score by over a year and the general title page on which Popper has inscribed as well as the half title are common to the full scores of all four Ring operas. As with Siegfried and Parsifal Schott's first edition of Götterdämmerung was issued in lithographed form with only a few mainly presentation copies being issued directly from the engraved plates. <br>One of the most influential cellists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Popper was a student of Julius Goltermann and at age 25 secured the position of principal in the Vienna Hofoper and the Vienna PO the youngest player to hold such a post and later joined the Hellmesberger Quartet. He was in friendly contact with Franz Liszt whose pupil pianist Sophie Menter became Popper's first wife in 1872. This marriage which produced in 1876 a daughter Celeste ended after fourteen years although during that time the couple appeared in countless joint recitals. His acquaintance with Liszt led Popper also to Richard Wagner and in 1873 he became a co-founder of the first ever official Wagner Society the Viennese Wagner-Verband. In 1886 his marriage dissolved Popper was appointed by Liszt as professor at the National Hungarian Royal Acadamy of Music where he established the cello and chamber music divisions. He remained until his death having also served as a member of the Hubay Quartet. A cellist of superior technique and a warm powerful tone Popper was a champion of new music and the composer of more than 75 works mostly for his own instrument. His most important contribution is certainly the Hohe Schule des Violoncello-Spiels a set of 40 studies that examine the positions of the left hand within a highly chromatic Wagner-influenced setting. <br style="">Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle.
