A crisp copy of a mid-seventeenth century edition of the statutes and laws of the Roman city guild of agricultural workers published by Giorgio Ferrari for the Roman Papal Press. Part of the comprehensive reforms and publication of decrees and statutes issued in the wake of Michele Ghislieri’s election as Pope Pius V in 1566 this volume outlines an extensive reorganisation of the agricultural industry including measures relating to the sale and distribution of vegetables and live-stock including pricing regulations regarding the division of land the rates of pay for farm workers and numerous public health measures relating to hygiene. Text is in Greek with Latin translation on opposite page. Bound in full red morocco perhaps later 17th century with spine gilt in 6 compartments - rubbed chipped. Hinges and spine caps restored; careful repair to corner tips of front cover. All edges gilt. Pages contain minor scattered foxing and age toning. Inscription written in an old hand on verso of front blank. First printed edition of the "Excerpta Peiresciana" manuscript or "De Virtutuibus et Vitiis" part of a large Byzantine anthology of excerpts which were gathered from earlier Greek historical works and compiled under the direction of the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus 905-959 c.e. The collection was arranged in 53 sections 4 of which are extant - 1. "De Legationibus" 2. "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" 3. "De Sententiis" 4. "De Insidiis." In 1582 Fulvius Ursini published "De Legationibus." Additions were later published by Hoeschel 1603. See Sandy's p.397. In 1634 Henri de Valesius Valois1603-1676 a respected Greek scholar and translator published "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" here listed from a Cyprus manuscript in the possession of M. Peiresc Excerpta Peiresciana. The excerpts include selections from Polybius Diodorus Siculus Nicolas Damascene Dionysius Halicarnassus Appianus and John of Antioch. The excerpts from Polybius's "History" are considered to be the most important as they form an integral part of what we know about the fragmentary sections of this work. Second edition of the large dissected map of Rome and surrounding countryside fourth edition of the two-in-one handbook illustrating the coast along the Tyrrhenian Sea from Lake Bracchiano to Mount Circe and inland to the Central Apennines foothills. Sickler’s 1773-1836 Panoramic elevated view of Rome with text key above identifying churches monuments and historical locations in 19th-Century Rome together with the map and handbooks here were key references for those taking the Grand Tour following the Napoleonic Wars which had devastated much of the Continent. Pietro Ruga 1772-1850 was a noted Italian engraver printmaker furniture designer and architectural draftsman best remembered for his maps and pocket panoramic views of Rome. Just a touch of shelf/edge wear to deep maroon cloth boards with gilt spine titles - two corners are bumped. Previous owner name in elaborate script on inside front and rear covers. Only flaw is the FFEP and the title page after it has corner folds. All pages are clean and unmarked. 37 chapters in 5 parts 114 B&W illustrations 25 tables and 2 charts plus index. This was the state of the art in 1916 and in many ways little has changed from these basics. Anyone with equipment dating from the turn of the 20th century will have a definite use for this book. Not only does this book cover the basics of oil and of lubrication but how specifically it applies to air compressors automobiles. coal mining machinery diesel engines baking machinery electric street cars and interurban electric cats elevators flour milling machinery refrigerating and ice baking machinery internal combustion engines marine engines motors and dynamos newspaper printing machinery pneumatic tools railway locomotives rolling mills textile machinery transformers steam turbines water wheels and wire drawing. Un minimo restauro moderno al margine inferiore della carta A1. Antica censura su alcuni versi dell’ottava LXIX del canto decimonono. Graziosa edizione della Gerusalemme Liberata illustrata dal pittore genovese Bernardo Castello 1557-1629 per il quale «quella di ‘istoriare’ la Gerusalemme fu sicuramente l’idea di tutta una vita cui attese fin dal 1586 anno in cui ricevette l’approvazione dello stesso Torquato"" Bondi 2014; sue infatti le invenzioni per la celebre edizione in quarto del 1590 parzialmente incise da Agostino Carracci e per quella in folio del 1617. Il Tasso apprezzò molto le figure disegnate dal Castello e scrisse un sonetto in lode dell’artista «il che obbligò di tal maniera esso Castelli che … nel 1604 fece ristampare in Genova per Giuseppe Pavoni lo stesso Poema in 12° … ornando l’opera con nuove e non men belle figure» Quadrio VI p. 670. L’edizione comprende inoltre i nuovi Argomenti di Vincenzo Imperiale la dedica di B. Castello all’abate Angelo Grillo e sonetti in lode del pittore composti dal Tasso dal dedicatario da Leonardo Spinola e altri. Guidi Annali p. 15: «Le figure di quest’edizione sono diverse da quelle date nella stampa del 1590 ma molto ben disegnate e d’un finissimo intaglio»; Gamba 648: «le edizioni genovesi … particolarmente si raccomandano pel fregio delle figure»; Brunet V p. 666; Graesse VII p. 33.
