Unpaged 2 pp. 20 1/2 x 14 inches. Mainly concerning the speeches on the Celebration of the Anniversary of the Glorious Fourth July 1776 as well as toasts. Began in 1844; ceased in Sept. 1846. Scarce especially the "Extras." Not at AAS. OCLC locates issues from 1846 at only two libraries: LOC and Lib. Co. of Phila with the later the only institution listing this July 14 extra.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Copy of H.B. Chew Towsontown Md. Henry Banning Chew 1800 - 1866 was one of thirteen founding members of the Philomathean Society the University of Pennsylvania's first student organization. He went on to become a successful merchant. He married the daughter of Governor Charles Ridgely of Hampton Maryland. In 1921 the Chew family sold the land from his mansion to Goucher College. Bookseller's ticket of William George's Sons of Bristol and recent bookplate of F. W. Morris to FEP amorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox to front blank fly-leaf scattered foxing. The second known copy of the sole edition of a record of the proceedings of a trial relating to the rights of inheritance to the fortune of Florence Smyth of Ashton Court Somerset. Smyth died in 1852 'at the age of about 83 years' leaving property valued at £30300 the majority of which to be left to Charles Hardcastle Abbott the executor. This was contested by Mrs. Upton mother to Smyth's three grandchildren to whom little provision was made. The court found in favour of Abbott concluding that Upton's allegations of nefarious conduct employed to extract an inheritance from Smyth were unfounded. OCLC records a single copy Yale. . Original green cloth pictorially blocked to Somerville's design on spine and upper cover in blue ochre and black and lettered on upper cover and spine in gilt; black endpapers; just a touch of wear; front endpaper strained; a few mild flaws but overall a very good copy. Contemporary presentation inscription on behalf of the Oxford Gardens Girls' School Swimming Club to Constance Cave - first prize for for "swimming on back" - presumably Constance Cave 1884-1919 daughter of a London jeweller.</p> London : W. Albumen print mounted on card; sitter identified in print beneath image. Standard carte-de-visite format approximately 2½ x 4 inches. Excellent contrast with light surface wear. Seated three-quarter portrait of Nightingale in dark silk dress with white collar hands folded over a paper posed beside an upholstered Victorian chair. The image derives from a sitting arranged in London with William Edward Kilburn one of Britain’s early professional photographers and a former daguerreotypist who gained fame by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. By the early 1850s Kilburn had established a reputation for photographing members of the aristocracy and prominent public figures.<br /> <br /> The Nightingale sitting happened shortly before her departure for the Crimea in October 1854 at a moment when her name was just entering the public press. The portrait predates her full transformation into the national icon later known as the “Lady with the Lamp.†Unlike later more romanticized images Kilburn’s photograph presents a composed unsentimental likeness more consistent with standard portraiture practices than her later photographs. Mr. Towers speak forcefully for the contribution of women as musicians and composers in his article in "The Musician" of April May and June 1897. Following the article is an alphabetical list of women musicians. He also apologizes to the "hundreds of Women who have done and are still doing excellent work in the field of music all the world over whose names are absent from the following list." This pamphlet memorializes the article and is dedicated to Florence Sutro a gifted musician artist and lawyer in New York City Society. She created the National Federation of Women's Music Clubs and was president of the Woman's department of the Music Teachers National Association. She and her husband Theodore were advocates for women's suffrage. <br /> <br /> Sml. 8vo 30pp printed photo of Florence Sutro. Publishers printed blue paper wrappers title in blue on cover and advertisement for the Estey Piano Rooms on verso. Tipped in at the rear is a one page testimonial of Estey Piano Co by Mrs Sutro. Printed on the last page of text is "By way of proof of the onward march of women in the elysian field of music." and goes on to praise the works of Florence Sutro the president of the newly created Woman's Department of the Music Teachers National Association.
