Founded in 1908 by the London publishers Chatto & Windus and operated by Philip Lee Warner the Florence Press had as its expressed intention the production of "beautiful books in the choicest types . . . in larger editions and at lower cost than was usual with such monuments of typography as the issues of the Kelmscott and other presses." Florence books are readily distinguishable by their special type designed by Herbert P. Horne after 15th century Italian faces that are elegant simple and easily readable. Binders Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe met as boys attending Douglas Cockerell's bookbinding classes at the L. C. C. Central School. Cockerell was so impressed by their skill that he hired Sutcliffe as a finisher and Sangorski as a forwarder. In 1901 Francis and George went into business for themselves and before long they had become two of the most renowned English binders of the 20th century. We can date the time of our binding to the decade of the 1910s because there is a letter from the binders laid in with an explanation of the decoration on stationery with the printed date "191__." The letter indicates that "250 different pieces of various colored leathers are used as inlays" many to suggest the contents of the essays: "the wedding bells and heart border are suggestive of the first essay 'Virginibus Puerisque.' The front centerpiece composed of spring flowers surrounded by a wreath of oak suggests 'Crabbed Age and Youth' and the back centerpiece suggests 'Pan's Pipes.'" A quarterly issues from The International Society of Copier Artists founded by Louise Neaderland as a non-profit group to help establish electrostatic art or xerography as a legitimate art form. The quarterly magazine was started in April of 1982 as a way to distributor the work of artists with the first issue distributed as loose sheets. Starting with this issue spiral bound volumes were released along with an annual box of books each summer. The magazine and organization finally ceased publication in 2003. Each page of this issue of the magazine represents a different artist with many contributions signed and numbered along with a collation stamp on the verso of each. 1914606026Chicago: Historical Feature Film Company 1914. Unbound. Near Fine. Film program. Octavo folded once to make 4pp. Illustrated from two black and white photographs. Two old horizontal folds a couple of thin stains on the front panel a bit of rubbing about near fine. A program for the film Money Talks in Darktown starring Florence McLain Frank Montgomery Bert Murphy and Jimmie Marshall. The Historical Feature Film Company was a White-owned production studio in Chicago producing films with largely Black casts but which still incorporated all of the racial stereotypes of the period. The company is largely credited with being established in 1915 though this program is for a film releasing on November 30 1914. Following poor public reception to their early films the company changed their name to the Ebony Film Corporation in 1917 in an attempt to appeal to the Black audience and hired Luther J. Pollard a young Black entrepreneur who was given the title of president and general manager. The company officially shut down just a couple of years later. Very scarce. In 1972 he established and has since led the Life Art Society an organisation focused on incorporating traditional calligraphy and painting into community activities. Under his leadership the Society has actively fostered multicultural interactions supported local art initiatives nurtured artistic talents and enhanced public appreciation for the arts. Born into a well-off family Tan had a father who was originally from Nan'an Fujian and ran several grocery stores. Tan attended Zhangde Primary School Chung Cheng High School and subsequently pursued studies in Chinese painting watercolour and Western oil painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts NAFA. Upon graduating in 1966 he joined a flourishing art education market where art subjects could also help students in gaining additional points for the Form 4 entrance exams. Seizing the opportunity and with the support from his parents Tan acquired a shophouse in Tiong Bahru where he began offering art lessons-an endeavour he continues to this day. Recurring motifs in his art include lotuses and angelfish-elements strongly resonate with the traditional cultural psyche of Singapore's Chinese community. The lotus historically a representation of purity and nobility among intellectuals and the fish is emblematic of wealth and abundance are relatable images that connect well with the general public. Tan uses warm harmonious and auspicious imagery to enhance the cultural identity of the Chinese community steering clear of excessively academic methods. "Giles Lytton Strachey 1 March 1880 21 January 1932 was a British writer and critic. A founding member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of Eminent Victorians he is best known for establishing a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy are combined with irreverence and wit. His biography Queen Victoria 1921 was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize." Wikipedia "Eminent Victorians is a book by Lytton Strachey one of the older members of the Bloomsbury Group first published in 1918 and consisting of biographies of four leading figures from the Victorian era. Its fame rests on the irreverence and wit Strachey brought to bear on three men and a woman who had till then been regarded as heroes and heroine. They were: Cardinal Manning Florence Nightingale Thomas Arnold and General Gordon. The book made Strachey's name and placed him firmly in the top rank of biographers. Strachey developed the idea for Eminent Victorians in 1912 when he was living on occasional journalism and writing dilettante plays and verse for his Bloomsbury friends. He went to live in the country at East Ilsley and started work on a book then called Victorian Silhouettes containing miniature biographies of a dozen notable Victorian personalities. In November 1912 he wrote to Virginia Woolf that their Victorian predecessors "seem to me a set of mouth bungled hypocrites". After his research into the life of Cardinal Manning he realised he would have difficulty managing twelve lives. In the following year he moved to Wiltshire where he stayed until 1915 by which time he had completed half the book. One of the subjects he considered but rejected was Isabella Beeton. He chose not to write about her because he could not find sufficient material about her. By then it was wartime and Strachey's anti-war and anti-conscription activities were taking up his time. He changed his views and concluded that the Victorian worthies had not just been hypocrites but that they had bequeathed to his generation the "profoundly evil" system "by which it is sought to settle international disputes by force". Printed in "blackletter text" font with an "O" initial designed and hand illuminated by McCaffrey gilt ruling and St.Christopher woodcut print from the 1417 Laus Virginia manuscript at the Rylands Library. Slightly dusty along top edge few smudges and pin-sized blemishes perhaps from the printing process else clean and nearly fine. <br /> <br /> A defining piece of Northwest fine printing and bibliophilia and with an interesting back story being an original invitation to the Book Club of Washington in Seattle 1929. Jodee Fenton notes in her excellent article from The Journal of the Book Club of Washington Fall 2013 businessman Nathan Eckstein and young Seattle printer Frank McCaffrey decided to host a dinner meeting discussing the possibility of forming a club of bibliophiles not unlike the Book Club of California Zamorano Club and other such groups. McCaffrey had just purchased his first press and opened business as Acme Press. This invitation however represents one of if not the first piece printed under his Dogwood Press name for which he would become well known in the following decades. <br /> <br /> <br /> This particular invitation was sent to Mrs. Florence Armstrong Grondal 1889-1977 of Seattle astronomer photographer and author of The Music of the Spheres: A Nature Lover's Astronomy 1926. As Fenton states regarding the inclusion of women one other woman was invited:<br /> <br /> "Women were generally not admitted to book clubs in the early part of the twentieth century and this departure from standard practice is notable."<br /> <br /> Interestingly the invitations were never sent the meeting never occurred and the Book Club of Washington did not form until 1982. There is speculation as to the reason: Eckstein's fear of leaving someone important out; prominent UW professor and invitee Edmund Meany's bad car accident delaying the event; the stock market crash of 1929. Whatever the case McCaffrey held on to the invitations until his death in 1985. <br /> <br /> The beauty and bibliophilic lore contained in this example of McCaffrey's printing cannot be overstated.
