The boards are a little bent by storage. The back board has a consequent length-long crease. The front board has storage marks and scoring. Despite these distractions the boards and spine are steady sure efficient. Within the contents are placid. There are shallow pools smears smudges of foxing throughout. B&W photo frontispiece "The leading woman penologist of our country presents the absorbing story of her life among the women who have failed society and themselves." Ms. Monahan the stern yet somehow motherly type to judge from her frontispiece portrait photo had headed up a number of penal institutions including the California State Prison for Women at Tehachapi. At the time of writing she was Superintendent of the Shakopee Minnesota State Women's Reformatory which transitioned to a new facility in 1986 but is still in operation as the state's only women's prison. She dedicates her book "to the hundreds of women prisoners I have known who are now good citizens." The Foreword is by Lewis E. Lawes ex-warden of Sing Sing who was well-known for his own chronicles of penal life "Twenty Thousand Years in Sing Sing" et al.
