A character based on an old minstrel toy she had owned who is one of a number of toys who come to life one night for obligatory hi-jinx. The Golliwog was well received becoming the main character for further stories as well as becoming a popular toy and figure in society and used in other works. Despite the baggage there are no racial overtones here and Upton was distressed to see the character become a racist stereotype in other hands. With 32 colour illustrations by Florence and verse by her sister Bertha. Oblong 4to. Quarter cloth decorated end-papers. Toning and marking to covers. Rubbing to edges. Its title hardly describes its scope for it is in fact almost a treatise on nursing at large. Mrs. Gaskell in a letter of December 21 1858 wrote: 'It was so interesting I could not leave it. I finished it at one long morning sitting-hardly stirring between breakfast and dinner.' The purpose of the work was to prepare the way for the introduction of women as nurses in military hospitals and to lay down the basic principles of nursing. The subject is considered in great detail from the historical organizational and administrative points of view. Together with much that is outdated it contains a great deal of wisdom and is regarded as one of the most important of Florence Nightingale's writings. It is in this work that she lays down the Draconian code for the regulation of the nurse's life which forms such an extraordinary feature of her teaching. On the other hand it has to be realized that in 1858 the idea of a respectable woman entering a hospital as a nurse was very shocking and Miss Nightingale had to anticipate strong public opposition. 'There is nothing more dangerous than to undervalue the objections of opponents' she wrote. 'Let us give them their full weight and while firmly holding our course and trusting God to guide it draw useful cautions from the objections which we quietly and steadily confront.' Furthermore she firmly asserted in the very first paragraph that it would be desirable 'to consider all plans and rules for some time to come as in a great measure tentative and experimental.' 18843298<p>Seventeen-year-old Florence Nightingale Soden began this diary to mark her society debut and to document the expanded social and travel engagements available to her. The first entry on Sept 3 1883 marks her seventeenth birthday and details Soden's extensive journey around Italy and France far away from her home in Clapham England.</p><p>Soden clearly reflects upon some of her entries after they are written and edits herself. She cut out three pages another four have been completely removed from the diary and one page is painted over black. Botanical specimens are tipped in as momentos. Her student days are remembered with a Class I exam paper on the history of Rome laid in at the back. It may be that a Class I mark was the parental prerequisite for the reward of her travel abroad.</p><p>Born in 1866 and named after the illustrious nurse Florence visited her namesake city several times in her journeys. Soden documents everyday vexations and unusual events including singing lessons from Dr Emil Behnke and her experience viewing a tonsillectomy operated by Dr Lennox Manuscript Diary of Florence Nightingale Soden of Larkbere Thornton Road Clapham Park.</p><p>Half bound morocco remains of 3 wax seals on covers. 240pp. 20 x 17cm.
