Ireland continued preaching as a Baptist despite risking arrest; he even spent time in a Culpeper County jail. Eventually he settled down in the Shenandoah Valley teaching and preaching the faith throughout Virginia and enduring a strange episode where his servants attempted to poison him until he passed away in 1806.
