Woodcut coat of arms to the title page decorative woodcut initial to the first text page text in black letter. A very good copy with just a little toning slight separation and minor wear to the left-hand margin where once bound within a larger volume. An act restoring Ireland's ability to export goods directly to the colonies in the Americas and Africa issued in the context of the American Revolutionary War and amending what became known as the Navigation Acts. Restricting the freedoms of Britain's colonies with regard to the import and export of goods the Navigation Acts had been a significant factor in fermenting rebellious discontent in America - requiring all of a colony's imports to be either bought from Britain or resold by British merchants in Britain regardless of the price obtainable elsewhere. The acts were also resented in Ireland and damaged its economy as they permitted the importation of English goods into Ireland tariff-free and simultaneously imposed tariffs on Irish exports travelling in the opposite direction. The present act removing some of these barriers demonstrates the changing nature of British mercantilism as the American Revolution progressed. Double line gilt border on the boards with a single gilt ruling along the edges and a repeating gilt floral border on the interior. Marbled endpapers. Text block is bright with slight browning along the head. Some bleed from the plates. Occasional marginalia in graphite correcting the text unknown hand. Binding strong and square. Illustrated with the engraved frontispiece portrait. 8vo bound in later half-calf over marbled boards the spine with raised bands compartments decorated with panel designs in gilt black morocco lettering label gilt. 2 135; 62 appendix pp. A very well preserved unpressed and crisp copy the portrait with a bit of old evidence of damp unobtrusive and visually mostly confined to the verso. An English soldier adventurer and Jacobite conspirator Bernardi's involvement in an assassination plot against William III led to his subsequent forty-year imprisonment without proper trial in Newgate. While the principal conspirators were executed Bernardi and five others were held without coming to trial initially for a year ostensibly to gather further evidence. However their continued imprisonment was sanctioned by subsequent Acts even after William III's death. Bernardi's life in prison was made difficult by effects of the old wounds he had sustained in the 1670s. Bernardi also complained that his confinement in the "dismal and loathsome" gaol had cost him "above seven hundred pounds for his lodging". J. Newcomb hardcover

ESTC citation number T79991.Illustrated with a frontispiece one map thirty-one plates and in-text engravings.Collated complete.An interesting topographical work on the River Avon focusing on its running through the county of Warwickshire where the river becomes commonly known as 'Shakespeare's Avon'. Providing an insightful look at the Avon's run in Warwickshire and its surrounding public buildings. The author Samuel Ireland was a fervent admirer of Shakespeare his admiration shining cleary in this detailed topographical work. Despite his work as an author and engraver Samuel Ireland is best remembered today for being the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries a series of forged letters that his son William Henry Ireland purported to be by Shakespeare. In fact in for preparing for this work Samuel took his son to Stratford-Upon-Avon to admire the sights. This trip took place in 1793 with William's forgeries appearing late in 1794. In a rebacked calf binding. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the boards. Bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some occasional spots a little heavier to the plates. Tissue guards are worn with loss to some. Plate facing page 250 is detaching. Very Good R.
