Choice album preserving a colorful and representative slice of Irish political life in the mid-1930s including the signatures of Eámon de Valera and 9 members of his cabinet in the 8th Dáil 1933-1937 on a single sheet followed by 24 individually tipped-in signatures de Valera and seven others are repeated in this group.<br /> Eámon de Valera was a leader in the war of independence and after breaking with Sinn Féin in 1926 was a founder of Fianna Fáil and head of the Irish Free State government. The members of his cabinet for 1933-1937 who have signed here are Seán T. Ó Cellaigh Seán Thomas O'Kelly deputy prime minister; P.J. Ruttledge minister for lands and fisheries; Seán MacEntee minister of finance; Tomas O'Derrig minister for education; Gerald Boland secretary of Sinn Féin chief whip; Frank Aiken minister of defense; Seamus O'Rian James Ryan minister for agriculture; Patrick J. During the Irish Exhibition of Living Art at the Project Arts Centre in 1972 Brian ODoherty in a performance before 30 invited witnesses and assisted by artists Robert Ballagh and Brian King undertook to sign his artworks Patrick Ireland until such time as the British military presence is removed from Northern Ireland and all citizens are granted their civil rights. That commitment often seen as controversial was described by ODoherty as an expatriates gesture in response to Bloody Sunday in Derry. After 36 years of making art as Patrick Ireland ODoherty reclaimed his birth name with the symbolic burial of his alter ego in the grounds of IMMA on the afternoon of Tuesday 20 May 2008. The burial was a gesture of reconciliation to celebrate the restoration of peace in Northern Ireland. We are burying hate stated ODoherty its not often you get the chance to do that. 191526775New York 1915. Irish propaganda targeting the British during W.W.I. from the Irish World of January 30 1915. During W.W.I the struggle for Irish independence was suspended with the Nationalist forces splitting over support of the war. This handbill appears to be an effort to incite hatred of the British with racist descriptions of Fijian soldiers "the cannibals we may say" who fought for the British. There is a clear preference for Germany - "And these are the savages the cannibals we may say whom Britain is bringing over to fight the most enlightened nation of Melancthon and SchlegeL of Kant. of Mozart and Beethoven and Wagner of Goethe and Heine." <br /> <br /> The text characterized the Fijians as cannibals "dark copper colored have black eyes and bushy hair worn in the form of a mop" short stature protruding stomachs legs bowed and feet flat and usually nude. The photograph shows the Fijian soldiers standing at attention behind a British Officer photo by Paul Thompson. <br /> <br /> The text of the handbill is extracted from The Irish World and American Industrial Liberator published in New York between 1878-1951. Hand bill 9 x 7 3/4" printed in blue on cream paper verso blank. Creased with marginal tears and small margin loss. <br /> <br /> Unrecorded on OCLC although there is a W.W.I poster with the title "Civilization Vs. Approx. 28 pages filled with neat ink manuscript entries illustrated with four small original sepia photos and a hand-drawn folded map tipped to inside of front cover. Covers a little worn contents age-toned but entirely legible.<br /> <br /> § A delightfully detailed record of an amusingly rushed school trip to Ireland made by an English schoolboy in 1913. The boys and several masters departed from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire it seems likely they attended Wycliffe College prep school and travelled by train to Fishguard in Wales and from there by boat to Rosslare Harbour in Country Wexford Ireland. Then by train char-a-banc a governess cart ponies and finally boats they tore across the south of Ireland to Killarney and back in a single day. The dutiful author of the journal prepares for the trip with several lists: "General time-table" "List of required articles" including "change of socks.cup soup-plate. rug if room" "Things to be noticed" Waterford Harbour Mountains Lakes Cattle Grazing. and a very thorough plan for "Meals" cornflakes chocolate bananas squashed fly biscuits. The journal itself is neatly written and full of detail particularly of the various vehicles Irish trains get a thorough review and his glimpses of "real Ireland". Four small mounted photos show a bridge in Kerry viewed from a boat Ross Castle "A Jaunting Bar" a kind of horse-drawn carriage and happily "the Author" who appears to be in his early teens. The star of the journal is a large folding map of the trip carefully hand-drawn and keyed and mounted inside the front cover. unknown
