VINTAGE CHRISTIAN MAGAZINES CHURCH OF IRELAND 1945 to 1951. Archive collection of 20 issues of "Divinity" a quarterly review edited by some members of the Church of Ireland. Softcover. Almost all issues have blue paper covers with black lettering with the exception of Volume I No. 1 which is typed on a typewriter on copy paper in black ink; and Volume V No. 10 which is an off white cover bearing an illustration of the South Prospect of the Cathedral of S. Patrick's in Dublin" in brown ink. All are bound at the spine by two staples. Publication volumes were originally issued four times within a year's span in May August November and February of the next year. Then in late 1947 publication months became more sporadic and more than four issues were printed in subsequent volumes. Volume I No. 1's title is slightly different reading "Divinity: A Quarterly Magazine edited by members of the Church of Ireland". Contents of issues range from a variety of theological topics such as: "Recent Theological Trends" "Religious Education in Northern Ireland" "The Church in Relation to the State" "The Theology of Holy Baptism" "Contemporary Continental Protestantism" "Clergy and Party Politics in Northern Ireland" "The Church's Teaching on Justification and Election" "Neo-Scholasticism" "St. Thomas Aquinas" "Marriage in the Modern World" "Moral and Ascetic Theology" "The Drama of the Bible" "Neurosis in the Church of England" "Moral Theology in the Anglican Communion" Lambeth 1948 What Is It" "International Relations: The Church's Solution" "The Eucharist and Reunion" and many more articles. Pages range from approximately 25 to 40 pages respectively yet most are numbered continuously in that the subsequent volume will pick up in pagination where the previous volume's page ended - yet this pattern is also sporadic as well. The original price for each issue was 1 per copy or 4/6 per annum post free. Volume III includes a newspaper clipping from "The Church of Ireland Gazette and Family Newspaper" circa 1946 laid in. The first page of the first issue is detached yet present. All are unmarked with the exception of some bearing the name of a previous owner at the head of the cover and annotation at the bottom of page 3 and the cover of Volume V No. 8. From the library of Lord Raglan with his book plate to the first pastedowns of each book. Includes a signed letter to Raglan from Anthony Christie the Honorary Secretary of The Royal Anthropological Institute. From the library of Lord Raglan Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated Cefntilla Court was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. Volume XL 1940 no. 1-230 with plates A-M. With one colour plate; Volume XLI 1941 no. 1-103 with plates A-F; Volume XLII 1942 no. 1-97 with plates A-F bound as one. An uber-sturdy still attractive tightly bound internally clean hardcover copy with unbruised tips; not seemingly ex-library but with perhaps four accession stickers to use later inside front flap but with neither highlighting nor underlining. Bound handsomely in dark-blue buckram cloth with tips and spine bound in leather complete with six compartments scribed by five raised bands and with gilt lettering and fleurs-de-lis to spine rubbed a bit scuffed a bit to extremities but attractive. Toning to front paste-down some scattered foxing throughout else clean and unmarked. Fine black-and-white painting portrait of Sir Thomas Drew the then current President of the Society. Notes regarding the Society formerly dubbed the Kilkenny Archaeological Society founded in 1849 but also that beccame the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland its members subscribers and then followed by learned papers about reliquaries and antiquaries ossuaries monuments remnants of past human societies and cultures. Black-and-white illustrations galore. Seven essay contributions ranging from stone crosses to battle-sites records of the Dublin Gild of Merchants to the Inis Chlothrann Lough Ree. red-specked page edges and plentiful black-and-white illustrations and maps. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of e.g. notes index and bibliography. Frontis matter iv-xvi 1 2-447 pp. an additional 44 pp. and including an index a list of the Fellows of the Society and so forth.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
