Hardcover first printing no dustjacket forest green cloth binding with an illustration of Rosa Hibernica in bright gold on the front cover 331 pages top edge gilt a sound copy of this scarce original edition there is a dark stain to the bottom portion of the already dark front cover see our photo and a small area of wear at top edge of spine the binding is tight and clean and the contents are clean and fine with one exception: a small black smudge could be printer's ink at the top of page 130 which does affect a few words of text this copy bears an interesting inscription: "To Captain Wm. Tate with kind regards Ronald Corry 8 Aug. 1888." Co-author Thomas Hughes Corry was deceased at this time but we suspect a relative wrote this presentation please note that although "Corry" is legible it is difficult to tell if the first name is Ronald and the Captain's last name is also open to interpretation . When 15 years of age she moved with her family to Troy NY where her father became a warden of the Episcopal Church there a post he held for thirty years. As a young bride Mary took a keen interest in the affairs of the Church teaching and serving in various capacities. After the death of her husband in 1834 she looked for a greater opportunity of service and began a Saturday school for children in 1835. This grew into a charity school of 80 scholars by 1844 the year in which she donated the funds for the erection of the Mission Chruch of the Holy Cross in Troy NY. The cornerstone of the church read "The Church of the Holy Cross was founded in the year of Grace 1844 by Mary Warren as a House of Prayer for all People without Money and Without Price."This memorial volume has extracts from her diaries the funeral address by Bishop George Washington Doane a Sermon by the Rev. The author proposes a method of reforming the tithe system in Ireland to quieten discontent and to support both the Protestant and Catholic clergy. Provenance: The Lawes Agricultural Library with their shelf marks to front pastedown and title page and their stamp to front pastedown. The library was assembled in the early 20th century by Sir John Russell director of the Rothamsted agricultural research institution in Hertfordshire and ranked as one of the finest English collections of agricultural material. Octavo 207 x 128 mm. Recent blue cloth front cover lettered in gilt. With errata leaf and additional errata slip the latter tipped in before p. 99. Single small mark to front cover light foxing to initial and final leaves earlier stabholes present. A very good copy. hardcover
18013820London: Printed for T.N.Longman and O.Rees 1801 1801. Only edition. Small 8vo. pp. 6 201 1bl. Contemporary calf double fillet borders to boards rebacked to style with gilt decoration and black morocco label lettered in gilt. Edges and corners rubbed with a little wear to the latter. All edges speckled. Internally near fine. A very nice copy of the first book published by Ireland following his exposure as a forger. Rare in commerce only two copies appearing at auction in the last fifty years. William Henry Ireland was a type familiar in the world of letters and books - the clever but rackety fantasist. He absorbed from his father a publisher a fascination with Shakespeare and perhaps more significantly the forgers Chatterton and Macpherson. A spell working for a lawyer gave him access to old documents which he studied and copied before taking the plunge and forging a deed containing Shakespeare's signature. His father thinking it real was thrilled. Ireland began to produce more "Shakespearian" documents claiming that they were from an anonymous collector. When even a letter from Shakespeare to Elizabeth I was authenticated by contemporary experts Ireland overreached himself and brought forth a "new" play Vortigern and Rowena. Ireland's doubters led by the Shakespearean scholar Edmond Malone began to circle and the first and only performance of the play was disrupted in part by its leading actor John Philip Kemble who repeated a line including the words "solemn mockery". Although the young Ireland immediately confessed both he and his father were disgraced the latter dying in 1800 and William being forced to eke out a thin living as a poet historian and satirist. Ballads in Imitation of the Antient was a clever attempt at redemption. It was published in Ireland's name so no-one could accuse him of forgery or fakery but the book played into the contemporary taste for bogus antiquarianism which floated somewhere between historical truth and historically inspired fiction. Assistant editor with Strafford of Coates's Herd Book. <br /><br />A poem "The Golden Shorthorns" was published in PUNCH 1867 commemorating the Shaw Farm Windsor Sale<br />'Twas Strafford raised his sandglass and Thornton held the pen When to a Windsor coffee-room flocked scores of Shorthorn men ; <br />They crowded round the table they fairly blocked the door- He stood champagne did Sheldon of Geneva Illinois.<br /><br />In 1875 Thornton sold Lord Dunmore's bull Duke of Connaught for 4500 guineas.<br /><br />At his retirement presentation dinner in 1905 Thornton said: "The breed is a splendid inheritance the immense value of which has been conclusively proved.
