The treaty negotiated in Rio de Janeiro established a reciprocal free commerce between the two kingdoms: "The Subjects of the Two Sovereigns respectively shall not pay in the Ports Harbours Roads Cities Towns or Places whatsoever belonging to either of them any greater Duties Taxes or Imports.than those that are paid by the Subjects of the most favoured Nation." The text also includes letters between the Chevalier de Souza Couttinho and the Marquis Wellesley regarding the status of Portuguese ships captured by the British during the war.
