Original full red morocco album with cover bearing gilt lettering and gilt corner devices gilt turn-ins a.e.g. Scattered foxing throughout though mainly to mounts. A very well preserved and handsome album of quotidian life in Wales.In all the captions we find the initials of the photographer; J. V. This is no doubt James Valentine. He was a a Scottish topographical and landscape photographer based in Dundee. Unlike many of his contemporaries he often included people in his photographs. The most charming photograph herein is of an old lady dressed in traditional Welsh garb and having tea on the patio. N.p. unknown

Duodecimo pp. 22 ii; original wrappers preserved in a folding cloth box. <p><p>The rare catalogue of the Society's inaugural exhibition held at the Garden Palace which had been purpose-built for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. An impressive two hundred and twenty oils watercolours and drawings were hung: Mrs. Alfred Williams' painting Ophelia the most expensive at £75 was highly praised by the Bulletin art critic at the time. Her identification as Mrs. Florence E. Williams gives more understanding of the high price as she had exhibited under that version of her name at the Royal Academy since her teens before coming to Australia. </p> <p>Her inclusion was significant for as Joan Kerr has noted "Florence's paintings seem unique for Australia at the time when domestic genre paintings are almost unknown." Florence was a founding member of the Art Society and had been a friend and pupil of and much influenced by Millais. As one of the very few figure paintings in the exhibition Ophelia gained most attention but she also had four other oils in the exhibition. An earlier painting not in this exhibition of a crimson Rosella set against lush vegetation and Mount Wellington was sold for a record $90000 in 2015.</p> <p>As well the catalogue notes W. C. Piguenit's Sydney Harbour from North Shore priced at £52.10.0 in modern times it reached $198000 at Melbourne auction. The catalogue also records works by Collingridge Halstead and Short as well as seven New Zealand watercolours by J C Hoyte the President of the Society. The list of "Working Members" names 80 artists and the Honorary and subscribing Members 47 notably Sir Henry Parkes.</p> <p>From 1871 the New South Wales Academy of Art had held annual exhibitions and had urged the establishment of a Public Art Gallery. This had as much to do with inter colonial rivalry - Melbourne had opened its Gallery in 1861 - as it did about fine art. Once a permanent home for the collection had been found the New South Wales Academy of Art dissolved in 1880 and it was acknowledged that an "artists' society" was needed: a society of professional artists rather than the more inclusive Academy. Artists led by Arthur and George Collingridge sought to establish an Australian school of painting and the first exhibition of The Art Society of New South Wales was held in December 1880 following its formation in July of that year. </p> <p>This catalogue notes that the Society was established for the "promotion and preservation of the Fine Arts in Sydney" and to "enable professional artists to exhibit their works advantageously." Further aims of the Society were lectures on art and a sketching club. The Life Class already established will "give rise to a greater variety in the works."</p> <p>This catalogue is a rare surviving record of the Art Society's first exhibition and succinctly captures the impressive depth of Australian Art in the late nineteenth century.</p> </p> . W. Sharp compiled and drawn by J. Tayler. The map in very good condition with a very small chip at lower left corner. On the inside cover printed information concerning rail ways telegraphs banks live stock coal diamonds lead & silver kerosene shale iron ore tin gold fields copper land crops and wages. Of the two women mentioned in the other Mary Kelly & Anne Robertson only Kelly appears on this record paired with Thomas Marshall his wife. <br /> <br /> Eight of those tried at Glasgow & Renfrewshire were transported to NSW Australia on board the Eliza which sailed on 22nd September 1819. It is not located on OCLC Jisc LibHub or National Library of Scotland. OCLC: 181717771 cites a slightly later "Criminal trial" in Glasgow 27th of April 1819 held by the Univ of Glasgow and the SLNSW. The date is not printed but the date "on Friday the 28th May" is a Friday in 1819. The printing is also consistent with other similar broadsides we have handled.<br /> <br /> Dumfries: Henry McNish sentence 14 years; transported 29 Mar 1820 on the Mangles to NSW; John Brown and James Brown no transportation record near 1820; Samuel Ferguson and Mary Bunton housebreaking and theft - Sentence 14 years; he is transported July 1821 on the Lord Hungerford arriving in Tasmania in July 1821; no record for Bunton; Margaret Kerr theft imprisonment for 12 months; Peter Finlay & W. Donnel theft housebreaking hanged Ayr: John McNeil Joseph McNeil housebreaking theft - hanged.<br /> <br /> Three weavers were accused of 5 acts of highway robbery. Theyt were Arthur McCan alias M. Keand John Killan alias Kelly and John Stott. There was an Arthur McCann b. 1781 weaver "Irish rebel" departed 21 Jun 1822 arrived NSW 8 Nov 1822 on the ship Mangles. John Killan alias Kelly was apprehended the other two either escaped or were never caught pled not guilty but confessed to being with the other two and brought authorities to the place where event took place and where a watch was hidden. Witnesses could not identify Killan. Though pronounced guilty because of his youth and honesty he was recommended unanimously to be given mercy. "Lord Pitmilly. pronounced in a manner awfully impressive . the sentence. the prisoner to be executed at Dumfries on Wednesday the 26th of May. The prisoner who during the trial conducted himself with great propriety now fainted and was carried out of Court in that state." However it appears his sentence was commuted to 99 years departed 29 Mar 1820 on the ship Mangles arriving 7 Aug 1820. A satire featuring Lady Hertford scantily dressed and peering over the Prince Regent as he writes a letter--presumably to The Duke of York concerning the choice of his Ministers. Lady Hertford was the alleged mistress of Prince Regent and later George IV. The first three volumes contain extracts from the historical works of Gerald du Barry a Welsh noble and churchman of the twelfth century. He attempted to establish the independence of Wales by restoring the see of St. David's to its ancient primacy. Volume I contains the De Rebus a se gestis an autobiography; Invectionum libelli a reply to calumnies circulated against him; Symbolum electorum which contains his letters and poetry; and other letters and poems. Volume II contains the Gemma Ecclesiastica a manual for the parish priests of Wales which presents a true and vivid picture of the Welsh clergy in the 13th century. Volume III contains the first four books of the Invectionum libelli a merciless attack on Giraldus' enemies; the De Menevensi ecclesia dialogus written for Stephen Langton on the Welsh clergy; and the Vita St. David. Volume V contains the Topographia Hibernica and the Expugnatio Hibernica. The former is the result of Giraldus' visits to Ireland; his account of Irish history is unreliable but the work is valuable for his observations of natural history. He records his own acute observations on the animals of Ireland in addition to recounting traditional medieval legends on them. The Expugnatio is poetical book of prophesy. This likely refers to John Teague Thain Jr. 1866-1905 who was born in Willard Box Elder Utah lived in Swansea Glamorgan Wales in 1901 and died in Logan Utah. The Thain family is featured in the book "From Amroth to Utah" by Roscoe Howells. Flake 1783. From the Preface to the Twenty-Second Edition-<br /> <br /> "No book published by or for the Latter-day Saints has run through so many editions or been sold so extensively as the Hymn Book of which this is the twenty-second edition. The demand for it continues unabated and since the publication of the Latter-day Saints' Psalmody which contains music for every hymn in this book a new interest has been added to it and its usefulness enhanced. In this edition will be found a metrical index which the book formerly did not contain. This feature will be especially valuable to choirs. A few hymns have also been added to the end of the volume. Manuscript letter inquiring of the Holywell Workhouse Union in Holywell Wales as to whether it has a "surplus of agricultural labourers" as "my house has received an order from the Government of New South Wales to send out a considerable number". The letter was first sent to Newelyn Loyd of Denbigh from an unnamed but "most respectable commercial house. at Liverpool". He copies it here and forwards it to the "Guardians/or Secretary of the Holywell Union Holywell". On the inside folds Loyd explains that he thought it might be acceptable for the Guardians to place some of the occupants on the path to New South Wales by assisted passage. It is postmarked St. Asaph Oc 3 1838. <br /> <br /> The text continues with the terms - a Bounty presumably for the workhouse which would finance the journey; the labourers to pay L 2-3 and provide clothing etc. At Sydney "immediate employment at liberal wages: houses - specimen wages for different occupations "with rations for themselves & families" weekly "One peck of Wheat or 10 lbs of seconds four - Ten pounds of beef or mutton tea sugar. " It states "In ten days we dispatch one vessel and another will succeed her in a month. Shepherds Agricullurists sic Gardeners &c have been engaged at wages varying from L25 to L50 and in some cases for the superior Class as high as L80 to L100 per annum. Carpenters Masons Sawyers &c may obtain L2-2 to L2-10/ per week in Sydney. "<br /> <br /> 4 leaves 7 1/4 x 9" period folds slt separation central fold. Thick folio a splendid copy with generous margins on large paper in a fine period binding of crimson straight-grained morocco all edges gilt sides panelled in gilt with greek key borders spine panelled in gilt with green leather label. <p><p>A magnificent copy of an officer's vade-mecum the who's who of the British army at a moment in time and as the entire list of British Army officers in 1807 the crucial bible for issues of promotion and preferment as well as location and secondment. This issue is of note for including a breakdown of the officers of the New South Wales Corps p. 311 serving under Colonel Francis Grose the roll call of familiar names beginning with Grose Paterson Foveaux and Johnstone spelled thus.</p> <p>Such publications were sometimes bound in magnificent style as here but do not often survive in this sort of perfect condition.</p> </p> . 1883213731883. Albumen cabinet card with original photograph of the Australian station now located in the township called Barooga. Photograph on card with printed border the title written in pencil on verso. A small station house is visible at the right side of the image with a long wooden fence bordering the river. <br /> <br /> The area which later became Boomanoomana Station was first settled in the early 1800’s by Colonel Henry Gwynne who arrived there in the footsteps of Charles Sturt. By 1863 the station got its name when William Hay acquired 80000 acres. The property extended from Corowa in the east to Tuppal Station in the west and was quite wooded therefore suitable for cattle. But Hay wanted to establish a sheep station so he sold off his cattle cleared the trees at great effort and fenced the land purchasing merino sheep from established stations. Hay built a homestead which still stands; it was owned by Sir David Hay 1916 - 2009 head of Aboriginal Affairs Administrator of Papua New Guinea and Ambassador to the UN who restored the grounds and buildings to original condition. <br /> 3 1/2 x 6 1/2" image on card 4 1/2 x 6 1/2". Shipped from San Francisco California June 1883. Consignee: Alfred Hay Esq. Boomanoomana Mulwala New South Wales Australia. <br /> <br /> W. G. Markham was heavily involved in the exportation of merinos to Australia. He convinced Australian wool growers that introducing American merinos into the Australia flock would increase their weight and this was very successful. The purchaser here is Alfred Hay 1846 - 1918 the son of William Hay who established Boomanoomana Station. Alfred Hay became sole owner of Boomanoomana Station in 1886 after the dissolution of the partnership between his father himself and brother. Boomanoomana Station at the time consisted of 33000 acres of freehold and about 5000 acres of Crown lands.<br /> <br /> Markham was mentioned in many articles about Australian wool growing. In the "Pacific Rural Press" Volume 36 Number 24 15 December 1888 it reads: "We imagine it was this large purchase of sheep by Mr. Samuel McCaughey which started that genial globetrotter in the sheep interest Mr. W. G. Markham of Western New York on a pleasure trip to Australia last summer. Mr. Markham made us a call in California on his way out but did not disclose his business. We imagine that he went to see if there were any more sheep buyers like Mr. McCaughey in Australia and turn their attention to the flock of Western New York as well as to those of the Green Mountain State.
