1803036613Washington: Printed by A. and G. Way 1803. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. Octavo. Variously paginated. Bound volume containing the reports of the first 15 councils dating from 1803 to 1818. Bound in early full sheep. The leather binding is quite worn and dry and is scuffed and abraded. The hinges are sturdy. Lacks the top leather label on the spine; the bottom label reads "Vol. I / From the / 1st to 15th Council / Inclusive." Early owner's name at the headcap of the spine is illegible and no names within. The binding is designs with rules of alternating oval and diamond designs in blind about the edges. There is some pest damage to the outside edges of the text block towards the rear of the book not affecting the text. Text is toned and foxed with some damping at the front and rear. Two blank flyleaves at the front an numerous blank pages at the rear. Most of the reports have their own title pages. The reports that do not have separate title pages are those for: 8 1810; 12 1815; 14 1817; and 15 1818. In the 6th report 1808 there is insect damage for the leaves of pages 7-8 and 9-10 with significant loss of lettering on the fore edge of pages 7-8. Rare. 1-8 4 9-49 i-ii ix 1-2; 1-32; 1-47; 1-44; 1-46; 20 1; 42; 15 1; 56 iii; 56; 36; 88; 69; 40; 45 pages with 10 blank flyleaves at the rear. The final few flyleaves of torn and stained. Complete with 120 engraved plates plus 1 map. The binding measures 11 1/8 inches tall by just over 9 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original 3/4 black leather with dark brown cloth-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and bumped and the hinges are especially rubbed but holding. Corners bumped and abraded. Some old stains and scuffs to the binding. A sound copy. A yellow bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown reads "Applegate Pounsford & Co. / Successors to Applegate & Co. / Publisher's Booksellers / Stationers Printers / and Blank Book Manufacturers No. 43 Main Street. - - Cincinnati." Marbled endpapers. The text is toned and shows some foxing on and around the plates. The foxing can be quite heavy especially at the beginning of the book. Two volumes in one book. The dates are on the title pages. Collates complete with all plates. A one of a kind historical document.</p>

Hardcovers bound in dark green half leather with marbled paper-covered boards. The bindings show some wear but are quite sound with sturdy hinges. The rear hinge on Volume 1 is scuffed with the untreated leather exposed. There is a white scuff mark on the front cover of Volume 1 at the bottom left corner. Bindings tight. Marbled endpapers. The text is a little toned and has some occasional foxing but overall the text appears clean. Half title to Volume 1 appears to be a little loose. SIGNED Bechet one of the publishers on the verso of the title page to authenticate this edition as not being a pirated edition. Text is in French. Hardcover bound in original full leather. The binding is worn and bumped with some old scuffing but is sound. Hinges secure. Early owner's inscription on the front flyleaf reads "Mr. John Bishop's Boo" and his name is again carefully written on the title page. Damped at the bottom corner of the front flyleaf and title page and this disappears about page 20. Text is foxed throughout. A scarce work of essays of history and opinion many decidedly political or patriotic. Two quotes on the title page are by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Christopher Manwaring 1774-1832 was born in New London Connecticut and lived much of his life there. He was a friend of James Madison and it is reported that he was an early admirer of Andrew Jackson. This volume contains nearly 20 essays on various subjects many dealing with early American history and political opinions. Some essays include: "American Revolution;" "Government;" Jefferson's Administration;" "The Embargo;" "The Late War;" "On the Fourth of July 1776.;" "On Taxation and Rights of Suffrage;" "On Mutual Dependance and Independence;" and several others. <br/> <br/> Printed by Samuel Green, for the Author hardcover

The binding measures 7 1/8 inches tall by nearly 4 1/4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original brown cloth. The binding is quite worn and bumped with the cloth fraying about the edges. Some gathering slightly sprung but holding. Lacks the flyleaves but the text collates complete. Early notations on the front paste down. Text is toned and foxed and some pages towards the rear are heavily dog-eared. There is browning in the text near the gutters running from page 12 to 21 as if something had been laid in loosely. Pencil notations on page 73 in the blank space at the end of the chapter are hard to decipher. Rear gutter nearly completely open and holding by a few strings. A worn copy of a rare book. "Final" Howes W-19 states "History of the war between the United States and the Sac and Fox nations." John Allen Wakefield 1797-1873 was born in Pendleton South Carolina. His family moved to Tennessee Kentucky and then Illinois. He served in the Illinois militia during the War of 1812 and later became both a physician and a lawyer. The binding shows heavy wear as well as some soiling and pest damage. A reinforced paper spine is all but perished. Outer wrappers show some foxing. The text block is delicate and may easily separate however the text is largely unopened. Extensive damping at the lower quarter of the binding affecting the text. This is heavier at the front where it affects the bottom 3/4 of the fore edge to over half of the bottom edge and retreats the further one goes though the text. Contains two large foldout tables at the rear. Housed in a board backed plastic sleeve. Text is in French. A rough translation of the title is "Notice on the Current Financial Position of the States of North America Accompanied by some details on the Debts of the Principal European States." The United States was in financial distress in the 1830s and 1840s. The Panic of 1837 led to a tightening of credit especially from the Bank of England. 19 of the 26 U.S. states had issued State Bonds for finance internal improvements roads railroads canals and a number of these were in default. The U.S. enacted the Bankruptcy Act of 1841 to allow debtors to file for their own bankruptcy without creditors initiating it although this was repealed in 1843. Much of the U.S. debt at that time was held by European banks. Alexandre Lombard 1810-1887 was a Swiss banker. This is a rare analysis of the financial health of the United States during a time of crisis by one of its creditors. We have found no auctions records for this work; currently no other copies appear to be for sale. It does not appear to have been translated into English. <br/> <br/> Imprimere de Ch. Gruaz paperback
