First edition of the second volume of the first national Canadian census. 8vo.: iv474 pp. 1 errata. Original green cloth title and maple leaf printed to spine within a single-rule. Ex library; without any external marks and having only a bookplate and two discreet embossed stamps within. Text leaves are clean; although a few leaves near the end have shallow creasing at the fore-edge. Cloth is sunned particularly at spine showing moderate soiling and staining overall with wear at corners and to a couple of spots on spine. The upper joint is starting and there is a horizontal closed tear at spine. A good working copy. unknown books

Jackson 2 pages on smaller note-size sheets concerning some lands in which he had an interest - back payments taxes; on Jan. 11th larger paper 1 page the same property is being discussed naming other parties - of Oldrich Blanchard and a Mrs. Long - there was a 'consideration' of $ 10000.00 mentioned at the close; January 22 asking Jackson to communicate as Hurlburt is traveling - he is trying to wind up the legalities of the lands concerned; with a 1873 short note written to Jackson on the letterhead of David Dall Vessel Agent 241 South Water Street Chicago asking for his fees due for freight on a schooner signed by Dall; light wear old fold lines; in very good condition. According to the C.S.R. Line letterhead it was the "Only Route Through Canada Under American Management." At this point in its history the Vanderbilt family exercised control over this rail line. A rare and lengthy report on a proposed treaty between the United States and Great Britain to drop the duty on Canadian coal imported to the United States. The authors of the report claim that importing coal and iron from Canada would free up American labor and capital to concentrate on other industries. This report presents a thorough statistical analysis of the issues involved. Then as now the free trade argument had many detractors but the authors of this paper favor dropping the coal duties. The United States and Great Britain signed a fisheries treaty in 1854 but a provision on dropping the duties on coal was not included. OCLC locates only three copies of this rare report. A Parliamentary printing of documents relating to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 negotiated principally by Daniel Webster and Lord Ashburton which resolved several boundary disputes between the United States and Canada. Foremost it determined the border between Maine and New Brunswick which had been the subject of growing local confrontations known informally as the Aroostook War. The treaty also agreed on crimes for which extradition was possible and notably neglected to include flight from slavery on that list. The documents contain correspondence between Webster and Asburton on both of those subjects as well as several letters discussing the Caroline affair in which a group of agitators for Canadian independence attacked an American steamboat on the Niagara River and sent it ablaze over the Falls in 1837.
