A sharp attractive heavy stock steel engraving from the first edition 1872-74 of editor William Cullen Bryant's landmark "Picturesque America; Or The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains Rivers Lakes Waterfalls Shores Canyons Valleys Cities and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country" a hefty two-volume study of America's scenery in words and fine steel engraving considered highly influential to American tourism. "Quebec" was engraved by one of this work's most notable engravers Robert Hinshelwood b. 1812 a Scottish-born artist remembered for his landscapes based on a painting by noted landscape artist and illustrator John Douglas Woodward 1846-1924. This delightful cityscape shows a rural foreground the Saint Lawrence River laden with rowboats steamboats and sailboats of every size in the middle ground and a large city loming up on the hills and bluffs on the far side extending almost to the horizon where mountains are faintly visible in the distance. Most of the engravings were printed on regular text-weight stock and a much smaller number such as this example on a fine heavy stock. D. Appleton & Co unknown

All volumes have sections in English and in French. Most of the volumes contain information on astronomy calendars remarkable events courts in Quebec duties and customs members of the executive and legislative councils of the Assembly and government departments lists of notaries surgeons pilots constables military organizations and religious and educational institutions. William Brown began printing this valuable compendium in 1780 and after his death in 1789 it was continued by the Neilson family until 1841. It did not appear however in 1781 1783 1790 1793 or 1795. The only collection known to contain all the volumes issued was burned in the Library of Parliament in Montreal April 25 1849. The proposed railway from Levis Quebec to Kennebec Maine was to connect with a railway under construction from Lexington Maine to Kennebec. The president of the company was the Hon. J. G. Blanchet - Speaker Legislative Assembly the Vice President the Hon. Thomas McGreevy M.P. and directors included the Mayor of Quebec P. Garneau and J. Sm. 8vo. RARE. Contains G. T. Cary's "County Seats on the Shores of the St. Lawrence Round Quebec" and Sir James McPherson LeMoine's "the Legendary Lore of the St. Lawrence." Sir James MacPherson LeMoine 1825-1912 noted Canadian author published several works on Quebec and the lower St. Lawrence. He is best known for his publication "Maple Leaves" a series of miscellanies published from 1863-1906. Mandement informing the Canadian faithful of Napoleons seizure and imprisonment at Savona of Pope Pius VII upon the Popes refusal to rescind a bull of excommunication and to renounce his temporal powers. The Bishop requests that special prayers be offered for the safe deliverance of the Pontiff. This particular copy of the mandement which is signed by P.F.Turgeon secretary to Bishop Plessis is addressed to Monseigneur Marchand missionary in Sandwich Upper Canada. No references located. Pictorial record of the Nonantum Club an American fishing club organized from New Haven circa 1892 with lands leased on Lac des Commissaires next to the lake village of Lac Bouchette west of Saguenay. The club is mentioned in reports of Canadian angling in Field and Stream at the turn of the twentieth century and an 1895 guide to Quebec fishing indicates that the club R.H. Brown president had recently built a clubhouse.<br /> <br /> The pictorial title includes a central vignette with crossed fishing rods fish tent a canoe on trestles and a creel about a central image of a goat among a pile of tin cans.Two corner pieces include initials a wall with D U R and a heart with G and E.<br /> <br /> The photographs include views of rail and horse transit waterfalls canoeing on the lake picnics at the edge of a cleared forest gatherings on doorsteps fishing and camping scenes.<br /> <br /> A unique visual record of 1890s sport in Canada. int unknown
