OCLC locates only two holdings of this edition Harvard and Michigan State and none of the first edition 1943.<br /> <br /> Located on the Alaskan Panhandle Skagway emerged as a gateway to the Yukon and Klondike goldfields and incorporated as a city in 1900. This scarce community cookbook was published at a time when Skagway was the base for more than 3000 U.S. Army troops tasked with building the Alcan Highway. Includes recipes for yeast and quick breads waffles and hotcakes cookies refrigerator desserts casseroles and luncheon dishes vegetables salads and salad dressings candies pickles and preserves etc. There is also a recipe for a butter extender from the University of Alaska Extension Service and a section on quantity cooking. Front side has a gold color rope braid at the outer edge then a red inner ring stating USS Alaska SSBN 732 with the word Alert Confident and Able the boat's motto in gold rectangular boxes and white images of a porpoise and a sea lion. The center has a whale at the top over a shield with a Trident on a blue background. The other side has gold color rope braid at the outer edge and a blue center areas with the words USS Alaska 1986 SSBN 732 and Kodiak Tough under the image of a large bear exiting a waterfall with a fish in its mouth. In a small plastic envelop with information on Kidder Corp Coins printed on it. USS Alaska SSBN-732 is a United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine which has been in commission since 1986. She is the fourth US Navy ship to be named for the Territory or State of Alaska. The contract to build Alaska was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton Connecticut on 27 February 1978 and her keel was laid down there on 9 March 1983. She was launched on 12 January 1985 sponsored by Mrs. Catherine Stevens wife of US Senator Theodore F. Stevens of Alaska; and commissioned on 25 January 1986. USS Alaska spent much of 1986 engaged in shakedown training for her two crews and in clearing up the many details that attend a new fleet ballistic missile submarine's addition to the Fleet. She operated initially from New London Connecticut and Port Canaveral Florida but shifted homeport to the Pacific Northwest later in the year 4 September to 1 October 1986. Alaska sailed through the Panama Canal and visited San Francisco California 21-29 September while en route. She then served with Submarine Squadron 17 Submarine Group 9 at Naval Submarine Base Bangor Washington. Alaska sailed on her first missile deterrent patrol manned by her Blue Crew in the Pacific 7 December 1986 to 19 February 1987. Her Gold Crew carried out Patrol 2 16 March to 28 May 1987. She completed an engineered overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton Washington 1 May 2000 to 9 December 2001. The work included a Trident II D5 "backfit" that enabled Alaska to fire the improved version of the submarine launched ballistic missile. In addition the overhaul upgraded her to shoot the Mk 48 Advanced Capability ADCAP torpedo. Alaska had carried out 47 Trident I C4 and 12 Trident II D5 deterrent missile patrols when she sailed from Kitsap for the final time on 8 July 2006. The submarine subsequently completed a 27½-month engineered refueling and overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard Virginia on 8 March 2009. Alaska shifted to Submarine Squadron 20 Submarine Group 10 at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay Georgia on 1 May 2009; she arrived at Kings Bay on 1 April. 190141698Nome: The Nome News 1901. 1901. ALASKA CRIME. First edition. 15" x 22" newsprint 4 pp. printed in six columns. The newspaper is printed semi-weekly and this issue is dated August 17 1901. This newspaper is quite content-rich compared to most small papers of the era with considerable space devoted to original local news content. Problems of violence and frontier justice dominate this issue. A large headline on the front page blares "A Murderous Knife Wielded" and describes a fight over a woman in which one man's head was nearly severed. Another lengthy story reports that a gang of 65 masked men attacked a camp on Glacier Creek at three o'clock in the morning--leading to thirteen arrests and one man hospitalized with a gunshot would--all the result of a disputed mining claim the history of the dispute is recounted in the article. A separate editorial reacts to these events with a call for martial law at the camp concluding "A man may kill another in the heat of passion for principle and be justified but the man who deliberately plans to jeopardize life for gold over which there is a clouded title is a murder to all intents and purposes and deserves the fate of a murderer." Another article reports that Judge James Wickersham spent a day in Nome on his way to Unalaska where he will preside over two murder trials and that he is concerned about finding enough competent jurors. And yet another reports that 54 members of the Nome Bar Association have sent a signed petition to President McKinley requesting that he remove District Judge Arthur H. Noyes on the grounds that he "is vacillating and dilatory weak and partial negligent careless and absolutely incompetent" and that "the interposition of a fearless honest and competent judge is urgently required at Nome to prevent further riot and bloodshed to preserve law and order and to protect life liberty and property." The story of yet another murder also gold-related appears on the paper's last page where we also find the usual classified and display advertising. The first chapter titled "Recipes from Foreign Lands" contains numerous Scandinavian and European recipes reflecting the countries of origin of many community members as well as several Mexican and Chinese recipes. A promotional cookbook of recipes making use of canned salmon issued by the Alaska Packers Association which was at the time the largest salmon packing company in Alaska operating canneries across the state and headquartered in San Francisco. The booklet prints recipes for 30 dishes and several sauces including "Salmon Pie" "Salmon Croquettes" and "Army and Navy Salmon Scouse" all of which call specifically for Argo Red Salmon. The cookbook additionally makes use of vibrant graphics to promote the products for instance the title page bears a color illustration of a child taking a wild ride on a salmon while waving a can above its head and the recipes are illustrated with color drawings of several of the dishes. Laid into the booklet is a color printed label for a salmon can in pristine condition. Booklet in excellent condition with a hint of toning to pages and a hint of foxing and spotting to covers. unknown
