1829008474Richmond VA/ New York / Philadelphia : Various 1829. A collection of small religious books two were published Richmond both are Psalms and Hymns 1867 the rest NY 3 Bibles 1829 1864 1869 or Philadelhia Book of Common Prayers 1868. Range in height from 3 7/8" to 5 5/8". Together with an Autograph Book no publisher or date but inscription dated 1866. All were owned by a Southern minister in Memphis named J. O.James Owen Stedman and his daughter Ella Owen Stedman. Stedman was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Shelby County from 1854-1868. He then helped to found the Alabama Street Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1868. The autograph book with one page presentation inscription to Stedman dated Dec. 1866 with ten signatures of elders and deacons of the church on 3 pages. No further autographs or writing in the book. Autograph book good loss of half the spine leather the book quite rubbed. The small Bibles etc. are Very Good to Near Fine. A unique collection of post Civil War Memphiana. . Leather. Very Good. Cantonment Leavenworth became on the death of Snelling Fort Snelling which continues to stand at the confluence of the present day Minnesota River and the Mississippi. 185421005Hartford: E.T. Pease & Co 1854. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet 51 pp sewn binding original printed wrappers. Some paper loss to spine and at corners binding tight text clean. On March 2 1854 a recently installed 50-horsepower steam boiler exploded at the railroad-car factory Fales & Gray Car Works in Hartford Connecticut. The explosion killed 16 men wounded many more destroyed the blacksmith shop and engine room and badly damaged the main building. Workmen were buried in the rubble when the roof and walls caved in and many were severely burned. An investigation commenced the following day and a jury heard six days of testimony from workers managers and the boiler manufacturer before concluding that the carelessness and inexperience of the boiler operator who was killed in the blast were to blame for the disaster. The jury recommended that City Council of Hartford pass legislation to regulate the placement and operation of boilers so that workers would be better protected. It was ten years before that occurred but a more immediate consequence was the establishment of the city's first hospital -- the need for which was made evident by the lack of facilities to treat all the blast victims. This pamphlet sold to raise money for the victims and their families includes a list of all men killed or wounded schematics of the boiler and plant layout transcripts of eyewitness testimony given before the Coroner's Jury and the Jury's recommendation for better training and workplace safety. Near Fine the photo perhaps a bit faded. The photograph shows Abraham Lincoln surrounded by his Generals eight in all including Hooker Meade Grant and Sheridan. William Notman was a noted photographer of the era and this card is considered one of the earliest to use a composite photograph in advertising. 182920299Cambridge: Hilliard and Brown 1829. First Edition. Wraps. Good. 4-1/2 x 7" sewn plain-paper later wrappers pp. 24 wraps soiled the whole pamphlet faintly creased vertically but good and sound with intriguing pencil notations throughout see below. A straightforward listing of the adminstrators faculty and students under- and post-grad at Harvard in the fall of 1829 rendered interesting by the penciled notations on several of its pages. The flyleaf contains a name indecipherable to our eyes and a location Round Hill which was a short-lived 1823-1834 secondary school located in Northampton Massachusetts founded by George Bancroft and Joseph Cogswell on the European model particularly in the mode of the German 'gymnasia' to compete with existing academies such as Philips Exeter and Andover. Further penciled notes indicate which of the students had matriculated from Round Hill with a running tally 6 of 48 seniors 12 of 70 juniors 3 of 76 sophomores 3 of 55 freshmen. What about this makes our ears prick up Round Hill's demise was in no small part due to a conundrum its founders were unable to solve to wit: the education they provided was so superior that their students were TOO well prepared for college putting them directly in conflict with the admissions procedures at Harvard and Yale. While the Round Hill boys were already proficient in the Greek Latin and mathematics being taught freshmen and sophomores and even juniors at the ivies those institutions refused to allow the younger students to skip ahead unless they paid out of pocket for all four years of college. The economics were against the school -- either a Round Hill boy ponied up and spent two years cooling his heels until he learned something new or he went out into the world with the education but without the prestigious degree. The notations here suggest that someone in real time while Round Hill was still in existence was keeping score trying to make the argument. But in the end parents wearied of the inherent conflict and the preparatory schools which tailored their curricula to the university system won the day. Hilliard and Brown unknown books

Handwritten notebook with 16 additional daily accounts using "Lake Austin Woolen Mill" letterhead for this cheese factories daily tally. Ledger describes what seems to be a cheese co-op with dividends divided per day report of the season most milk received in one day June 16th - 9195 gallons days cheese was made per year 207 etc. Wells VT rests on the edge of Rutland county and in 1870 the populations total was 430 people. In the early 1800's a dam was built on Lake St. Catherine which enabled industry such as a woolen mill wood working shop and cheese factory to thrive. Covers worn joints cracked but holding 2 cm. loss of leather to tail of spine. <br/><br/> hardcover books
