House Bill 143 was entitled "A bill for the relief of certain half-breeds of mixed bloods of the Dacotah or Sioux nation of Indians and their grantees." It related to the provisions of an act passed in 1854 granting the "half-breeds" scrip in exchange for land previously assigned to them under an 1830 treaty. This report from the Committee on Public Lands recommends against passage of the bill which would have presented obstacles to railroad construction in Minnesota. The committee argues that "Congress ought not to interfere by special legislation but should leave the parties to their legal rights." A scarce report with only digitial copies located in OCLC. A massive butcher presides in front of his stall pointing out the benefits of a gargantuan joint of beef. His clientele dressed in ostentatious costume look on as he points of the merits of his wares: "There is not such dignified Beef in the Market - believe me Right Honorable every Inch of it; Coronets marked in the fat and Genealogy in the lean - had it pon Honor - from my Lord cram Bullock - delicious! - you may smell the Oil Cake a mile - no vulgar ingredients - only half a Crown per pound - a mere trifle - I have indeed some low bred beef at Sixpence but I am sue Sir it would not suit your refined Taste." The gentleman answers: "Why look ye - Master Suet as I am not over ambitious if you please - I'll have a slice of the Citizen." His wife adds: "Husband dont be so Wulgar I say send home a Sir Loin of true Nobility." Light foxing small close tear to top edge. Whittlesey a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy served in the Black Hawk War. Afterwards he became assistant geologist for the state of Ohio and later was employed by the Federal government. Very good. 5-3/4 x 9" sewn printed wraps pp. 72 wraps foxed and lightly soiled spine with loss to the head and tail with lesser chipping along its length but the binding sound and text clean A most-thoroughgoing census of all 150 members of the class of 1855 including dropouts five months in the making as per the Editor's "Valedictory" statement. The preliminary pages give in copious detail descriptions of various meetings and reunions which have taken place in the years all four of them since graduation and then lists every member of the class along with "Where Are They Now" biographical tidbits that make my mother's Christmas letters look tame. These are followed by various cross-indices by place of birth date of birth "the aggregate age of the Class at graduation was 1978 years" time of entrance profession etc. Then are listed those who "left without graduating" in decreasing order of years of attainment poor William Ross Degarmo "Entered from Fort Miller N.J. Oct. 18 1851; left Dec. 24 1851 and has not since been heard from". A labor of love truly by one committed to the cause. Wheeler would not alas be much longer with us as was no doubt true of many of his classmates -- he was killed fighting for the Union side in 1864. His devotion lived on however: After the war his mother published a memorial volume entitled "Letters of William Wheeler of the Class of 1855 Y.C." Houghton 1875.
