Both volumes with ownership signature and Washington D.C. address of famed Australian navigator Harold Gatty and both SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Gatty to F. Dana Coman starting at bottom of front paste down Vol. I -"Dedication is in the other end - as usual with me barse ackwards nautical palaver" continuing on to rear paste down "To Dana Coman A.B. from Harold Gatty 2nd mate dedicated and given for reasons in Vol. II" and on rear end page "Stand Back ! you shallow water men - and let a deep sea wave go by !". The inscription at front end page Vol. II reads " To Dana from Harold Gatty D.C. address lined out but legible So that he may become well acquainted with our future roaming grounds". Harold Gatty 1903-1957 is best known as the navigator along with pilot Wiley Post of the flight starting 23 June 1931 which set the record for aerial circumnavigation of the world in eight days 15 hours 51 minutes. Charles Lindbergh called him the "Prince of Navigators" and Anne Morrow Lindbergh was one of his students. F.rancis Dana Coman is best known as medical officer on the Byrd First Antarctic Expedition 1928-30 and in 1934-35 was the medical officer on 'Wyatt Earp' during Lincoln Ellsworth's second expedition to Antarctica. Their association involved the Pan Am and Kinkajou Expedition of 1935. The first Kinkajou voyage was secretive in nature as the US Coast Guard and Navy were working in cooperation with Pan American Airways to determine aeronautical routes across the Pacific. Gatty was a representative of Pan American Airways and sailed from Honolulu November 4 1935 with Coman on the second Kinkajou voyage to conduct meteorological observations and to pick up the personnel Dr. Coman had left on the three islands and return them to Hawaii. Blumberg and others. An ex-library copy from the Catholic Parish Library Sacred Heart Church Bournemouth their stamps are noted throughout. General shelf and handling wear including creasing and wear to cover edges and bumped corners. Age-related blemishes and an element of surface colour loss present to boards. Pageblock tanned this leading into endpapers and page edges. Within light tanning and foxing noted first fold-out image is damaged half missing further two fold-outs show panoramic images of before and after the disaster; further images show the level of devastation at various locations throughout the city. On imprinted letterhead Zara thanks his admirer for sending copies of two Lincoln-related pamphlets he'd published asking: "I am curious about these booklets. Do you print these yourself and how do you distribute them I hope the contact with Morrow will do you some good. I am always glad to help where I can." Of his next book he notes: "I am working on the revision of my book and alas! no good clinching title has come as yet: usually my wife picks one almost from the first chapter." Presumably he refers to his 1943 release "Against This Rock." He goes on: "I saw in the press that Louis Bromfield had been in and out of the city of Chicago a number of times. Recalling how enthusiastic you were about him I wrote him a note asking him to give me a call when he came through next. He said he would." Boldly signed in black ink at the close. Zara 1910-2001 was a New York book and magazine editor and publisher who authored a handful of novels mainly historical fiction and fictionalized biographies such as this one and others on Philip II of Spain and Herman Melville. The book covers are in mostly clean bright condition. There is some light rubbing and wear to the spine ends spine joints and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "Jerome's modern history began in 1876 when three prospectors staked claims on rich copper deposits. They sold out to a group which formed the United Verde Copper Company in 1883. The resultant mining camp of board and canvas shacks was named in honor of Eugene Jerome the venture's principal backer. Hopes for the enterprise ran high but the costs of operating especially for transportation outstripped profits and the company folded in less than two years. It took the vision and vast financial resources of a new owner William A. Clark to bring in a narrow gauge railroad and reduce freighting costs. By the early 20th century the United Verde was the largest producing copper mine in the Arizona Territory. Reads in part: "Just when we thought that The Lincoln Herald was under capable hands Gerald McMurtry is gone and you have been forced to resign. It is a sad day. How the people at LMU could have given honorary degrees to the so-called authors of this trash is more than I can fathom. I saw Ralph Newman in Chicago this November and I can only describe his attitude toward their actions as 'furious.' It is all inexplicable disheartening and discouraging.
