A tight and nice first edition of this farewell speech by this 4-term Whig congressman 1841-49 politician writer and historian 1795-1881. Penned on February 20th two weeks before his departure from the congressional seat he lost to Republican Charles Allen Hudson here summarizes and defends his congressional career in detail especially his antislavery stance -- and while he calls his successor "a representative of acknowledged ability" and his tone isn't distinctly sour grapes he does find his defeat "under circumstances somewhat peculiar" alarming -- "I have been charged with basely deserting my principles; with wantonly betraying the interests of the State; and with wickedly sacrificing the cause of freedom at the shrine of slavery. the cry of cowardice and pro-slavery desertion and treachery has been reiterated from day to day." An uncommon and sought after accordian style fold-out view book with sixty 60 views on 12 panels that open all the way out. Individual views appear to a much greater number than 60 in total. Each panel measures about 5 5/8 inches by about 4 5/8 inches the covers about 6 by 5 inches. Faint old repaired tear on front paste-down probably by an improper opening at one time. French was a Cheshire County photographer from 1857 to 1898 with his studio in Keene. A stamp in the rear shows this booklet was sold at B. A. The Confederate Scrap-Book was published for the benefit of the Memorial Bazaar held in Richmond Virginia April 11 1893. Contains Confederate Patriotic Songs and Poetry as well as General Lee's Farewell Address to his Army. Many articles of praise and inspirational articles about the Confederacy. 255 pages. No pictures or illustrations. Book is amazingly tightly bound with one small break in front end papers but hinge is still strong rear hinge is whole. Wear to cloth over boards but no breaks to cloth. Heel and head of front and rear panels has exposed boards on corners. Moderate soiling and lost of color to cloth on spine in spots. Gilt on front panel is all present all with stripe of stars in red. No foxing page edges are dyed red. Nice sturdy copy of the first edition. This map was the recto of leaf 378/379 in probably a then-new history textbook. It is the same map with the identifier DLMW148 on the ImageBase of Virginia Tech University. This hand-colored in outline map shows the old boundaries and the new boundaries of Texas Upper California and Mexico and eastward to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. unknown
