18092221587<p>RARE MIDSHIPMAN APPOINTMENT</p><p>"Th: Jefferson" Partly-printed vellum DS as president 1 page 10" x 10 1/2" January 16 1809. President Jefferson issues a naval appointment for Henry Pilliam. In part: "That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Patriotism Valour Fidelity and Abilities of Henry Pilliam I do appoint him a midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Neatly signed at the conclusion by President Jefferson and countersigned by Secretary pf the Navy Robert Smith. The document bears an embossed Navy Department seal to the upper left. Intersecting folds overall wrinkling and light staining otherwise fine condition. Such appointments by Thomas Jefferson are quite scarce as he and the Republican party opposed a strong navy. However as Jefferson's term neared its conclusion the naval forces were beginning to grow out of necessity in order to protect the maritime interests of the United States as merchant vessels were  frequently being interfered with during their voyages on the high seas. Ultimately these disputes would culminate in the War of 1812 during President Madison's administration. A desirable and well-preserved example of a Jefferson appointment. Very good.</p> unknown books

With an 1892 ownership signature of Louis G. Carpenter at the top of the title page. Carpenter 1861-1935 was a college Professor and later the Dean of Engineering & Physics at Colorado State University formerly known as the Colorado Agricultural College. He was also a mathematician and an irrigation and consulting engineer. See Wikipedia for an account of his life. Pike's personal journal of the earliest U.S. government expedition to the southwest. Even before Lewis and Clark had returned in 1806 Lieutenant Zebulon Pike was sent to explore the southern reaches of the Louisiana Territory. Pike traveled to Colorado and down the Front Range looking for the Red River. His party failed to find it and instead wandered into New Mexico where the Spanish caught him and escorted him home. His expedition returned with valuable information about the northern provinces of colonial Mexico. He explored the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red Rivers and reported on the Spanish settlements in New Mexico as well as his account of his expedition to the upper Mississippi in Minnesota. The maps "were the first of this entire region to display knowledge derived from actual exploration and are of outstanding historic interest" Wheat Trans-Mississippi West Maps II pp. 20-21. Edward Cutbush 1772-1843 received his official naval commission as officer in the United States Navy on June 24 1799 and was the first surgeon listed in the Naval Registry and the only one listed as hired during the eighteenth century. Printed here are the acts admitting the state of Ohio with alterations of laws governing the Northwest and Southwest Territories as well as other session laws Importantly this volume contains a series of important treaties. The "Convention Between the French Republic and the United States of America" pp. i-xxiii with both French and English texts ratified in 1801 settled all the commercial and military disputes that had brought the two countries to the brink of war in the 1790s and paved the way for the Louisiana Purchase. Next appears the newly ratified version of part of Jay's Treaty also settling claims over commercial issues. The panorama extends to a total length of 30 feet 15 feet for each side of the avenue; each building is identified in the margins and the bustle of everyday city life is captured in the many people horses carriages etc. depicted throughout. 1820105055<p>Archive contains more than 5o items including letters manifests printed and manuscript and pay vouchers etc. in a loose-leaf binder. Some light wear and creasing some minor chips and fold tears normal aging and toning; overall about fine.This is a fairly large archive of the career of Captain Paul Ambrose Oliver c1796-c1848 and his ships the "Louisiana" the "Tiber' and the "Trenton". The archive includes manifests for the shipment of sugar cigars and coffee from Havana to New Orleans St. Petersburg Hamburg and London. One key item is a partially printed Bill of Sale for the Ship "Tiber" dated January 13 1834 for $21500. There is also an estimate for repairs to the "Tiber' dated November 6 1836. The earliest document is dated September 14 1829 and while most of the other documents are between the late 1820s to the 1840s the archive includes some items that are later. There is a letter to his son Brigadier-General and Medal of Honor recipient Paul A. Oliver dated March 29 1869 there is also a copy of the Last Will and Testament of the younger Oliver done in 1911. General Oliver was actually born on his father’s ship the "Louisiana’". There are numerous pay vouchers and receipts from what appears to be a successful career. There is even a rare book list and the burial confirmation for Captain Oliver dated September 17 1849. Other interesting items include a family tree for the Olivers some family letters including a letter to his sons several receipts concerning coffee shipments and a number of ship manifests from various places. Over 50 documents in the collection.</p> books

Modern sympathetic wrappers. Sig. A with pronounced foxing considerably less so in sigs. B and C. Stab holes in gutter margin; first eight pages with contemporary ink notations shaved some still readable unimportant ink stain on final blank. With ink signature of Connecticut Congressman Samuel W. Dana on title page as well as Eberstadt pricing notes $50 in 1929 and codes in pencil on title and final blank. Overall a crisp copy with an interesting provenance. Moses Austin's report on the lead mines in Missouri is one of the earliest selections in Becker's fourth edition of Wagner-Camp's Plains & Rockies: no. 2d ! -- Our copy was owned by Congressman Samuel W. Dana 1760-1830 who was almost certainly in attendance when Jefferson read THIS State of the Union Address "to Both Houses of the Congress." Dana's annotations appear on the first seven pages of the text. <br/><br/>Moses Austin's report on mining in Missouri appears as the third item in the present volume. Howes calls it the "First United States' book on Missouri" even though it was never separately issued. The bespoke report is likely the first publication concerning mining west of the Mississippi River. It certainly precedes Henry R. Schoolcraft's 1819 "A View of the Lead Mines of Missouri" sometimes considered the first book on the subject of Western mines. Austin reported to Jefferson that area he was then mining would be a choice acquisition for the United States. Austin utilized ingenious mining techniques of his own creation and became extremely successful. However in the end he had to declare bankruptcy a setback which caused him to turn to Texas for a land grant. Thus in one of the odd twists of history a failed mining venture in Missouri eventually led to the Republic and State of Texas a cause that was of course championed successfully by his son: Stephen F. Austin.<br/><br/>The other two documents in Jefferson's State of the Union message are of interest: the first expresses Spain's abandonment of opposition to the Louisiana Purchase -- a welcome development. The second is a proclamation by the President establishing a Customs District and Port of Entry at Mobile Alabama on the Gulf Coast. Other topics include the organization of the Louisiana Territory and measures taken against the Barbary pirates. Jefferson also reports that he is hoping to deal peacefully and productively with the area's Native Americans a policy that would be abandoned later in the century by other presidents.<br/><br/>PROVENANCE: Samuel W. Dana Connecticut member of the U.S. House. -- From the Americana Collection of Dorothy Sloan 1943-2021 great Texas bookseller and auctioneer who specialized in Western Americana Texana and Latin Americana purchased by her after Auction 22 12/11/2009 lot 547 $2400. This copy was offered at Heritage Dallas in 2012 as a contribution to the TSHA est. $2000 - $4000 unsold. Known as "Bioren Laws" this edition was compiled under the direction of the attorney general to fulfill an 1814 Congressional act calling for a uniform edition of U.S. laws. It also contains land claims notes on the origins of various governmental departments and treaties with foreign powers and Indians. Surrency observes this compilation perpetuated an error regarding the thirteenth amendment. "At the time John B. Colvin was editing the laws a proposed thirteenth amendment lacked ratification by one state yet was included in the Constitution. One leaf pp. 105/6 hastily opened with loss of the page numbers and several words of the Bill of Rights Art. 1 Sect. 1 and 9-11; centers of pp. 213-220 cut binder's blade with loss mostly on p. 219/220; some soiling elsewhere. Preserved in a folding protective case. UNCUT AND LARGELY UNOPENED copy of the FIRST Federal printing of the Constitution of the State of Texas: dated Dec. 2 1845 it preceeds the Senate version by one day for which see the digitized volume at UNT which is clearly dated "Dec. 3 1845." <br/><br/>Streeter no. 1613 which is dated "Dec. 9 1845" has wrongly been described as "the first Federal government printing of the Texas Constitution." That would be an impossibility because that document is 29th Congress 1st Session House of Representatives Executive Document No. 16. Ours is as above but is Document No. 2 sic! <br/><br/>Matters concerning Texas appear on pp. 3-137. "The President announces that Texas has complied with all the terms of the joint resolution on annexation and asks for early action admitting Texas to the Union. Contained is the Constitution of Texas and the first printing of the 1845 Joint U.S. Resolution for Admitting Texas to the Union. Includes a complete report of the state of the US Army immediately prior to the Mexican-American War with a map and 6 fold-out charts. Also contains reports associated with the settling of the Oregon boundary with Great Britain. It also contains Kearney's "Report of a Summer Campaign to the Rocky Mountains" and the journals of Lieutenants Turner and Franklin on that expedition.<br/><br/>Streeter no. 1623 calls for a map and seven folding tables; our copy contains a map and six folding tables; presumably one is lacking. It is signed "14" 4 leaves "14B" 2 leaves and "14C" 2 leaves. Pages 213-220 are quite clearly cancelled by a binder's blade but these were never replaced. Of the 14 pieces of printing identified by Martin in her Checklist of Minnesota Imprints 1849-1865 only two items Martin 6 and 8 broadside proclamations by territorial governor Ramsey bear an earlier date on the title-p. and one other Rules for the Government of the House of Representatives bears the same date. Includes standing rules for the legislative council rules of order and procedure of the two Houses and a list of the standing committees of the Council and joint committees of the House of Representatives. Rare. 100 copies were ordered printed. Martin 11 MHS only. Jerabek 66 identifying this as the first publication of the territorial legislature. Laid in one page circa 1904-1908 titled "Important Meetings for Fishermen and Oystermen - Itinereray of Fish Committee" listing a number of meetings with dates and places. On verso is a manuscript in pencil roughly 50 word description of where and how this book was found and who one of its prior owners was said to have been. The writing presumable in the hand of Joseph Hyde Pratt state geologist of North Carolina at the time as noted on the front and from whose estate this book came. A RARE publication in its own right Rare Book Hub notes last copy appearing in a dealer catalog in 1970. This copy rendered unique and historically significant by the original owner's addition of 78 blank pages which he mostly filled with pasted in contemporaneous newspaper clippings including 7 pp. of the Democratic Party Platform of 1856. Other significant clippings are headed: The Sanford Letter Wash. Aug. 21 1848 2 pp.; Kansas Affairs-Official Instructions to Gov. Geary and Gen. Smith Wash. Sept.3 1856; Kansas Slave Code 4 pp.; Who Are the Disunionists ; 4th of July Toasts in South Carolina: The White Man Shall Be a Slave If a Laborer: Slaves Horses and other Cattle a Sale by J.B. Sproull & Co. 1855; and The Buchanan Democracy Hate Freedom. Overall approximately 40 newspaper clippings pasted in with some marginal writings and notations in ink in the handwriting of the original owner who although unnamed appears to have resided in Greene Co. OH and was most definitely a Republican ! A very scarce directory that probably began in the early 1820s. It continued to be published through 1829 but in 1830 it seems to have become The Brooklyn Directory although Spooner was still the publisher in that year. The first 48 pages appear to provide the "names and residence of all the Householders." The occupations of the people that are named are also provided. Additional information ranging from village by-laws to important members of the fire department is included. Spooner also provides a list of churches in Brooklyn and the results of the 1820 census for Kings County. The total population of Brooklyn in 1820 was 11183. This is a fairly rare title which offers a vivid picture about what Brooklyn looked like almost 200 years ago.</p> Alden Spooner, books

Cornell and Edward C. Gale; in spite of defects noted a good sound copy of a very scarce directory. Contains a brief historical sketch of St. Anthony and Minneapolis numerous full-page advertisements for various local businesses and an alphabetical listing of the city's residents with addresses. First edition 8vo pp. 168; 4 engraved plates plus a large folding map in separate sleeve of later green cloth paper label on spine; original brown cloth extremities faded some spotting bookplate removed else very good. This copy inscribed to "The Hon. Mr. Woodbury with the comps. of the author." The map which measures approx. 27 1/2" x 40" shows "a portion of the Indian country lying east and west of the Mississippi River to the forty-sixth degree of north latitude" showing much of Wisconsin and sections of Illinois Minnesota and Iowa and all of Lake Michigan. The result of a British scientist's geological reconnaissance through the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi valley in 1835-37. Featherstonhaugh began his journey in Washington D.C. and traveled via Pittsburgh and Cleveland before visiting Detroit and travelling by canoe on Lakes Huron and Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay thence via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling where Featherstonhaugh's party ascended the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border and back again via Lake Pepin Galena and Saint Louis.
