A typically enigmatic inscription: "Proud of you" in a hand-drawn box at the top to the right of which is a small drawing of a face / "You never sniffed drainpipes but you two words crossed out have a good one word crossed out grasp of the alphabet - Highway 51 one word crossed out is not your road!" Signed boldly at the bottom "Bob Dylan / 1973" to the left of which signature is another drawing by Dylan of the rear end of an automobile depicting smoke coming from the tailpipe. Also a 6-page corrected typescript of the copy used for the dust jacket also a setting copy but with no corrections by Manfred. Also page proofs for the same tall 8vo 129 leaves printed on rectos only with extensive annotations throughout by the editior and printer including the amending of a number of words and phrases in the text. Also a first edition of the book 8vo pp. 8 226; fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. This copy inscribed "For Paul C. Hillestad 'our' first book together. Frederick Feikema Manfred." This book an account of the first solo nonstop flight between the United States and Europe in 1927 won for Lindbergh the 1954 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography. Rathman's first book printed at Vermillion Editions under the guidance of Steve Anderson. Gerald Lange of the Bieler Press and Norman Fritzberg of the Hansestadt Letterfoundry were responsible for the typographic design and composition. The portfolios were constructed by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. "Mythological in conception and Nigerian in origin.the linocut illumination that accompanies the text exhibits such regimented verve that it almost seems as if a scourge has been placed upon each page. TLS from Austin Heaton Carr of Winston-Salem laid in explaining that this copy was presented by John Motley Morehead to his grandfather Julian Carr on account of his grandfather's close friendship with Eugene Morehead: the two left Chapel Hill to fight for the confederates and Eugene was later best man at Julian's wedding. Limited issue numbered 15 of only 25 copies and signed by Morehead and presented to General Julian S. Carr. Joan Baez Donovan Maybelle Carter Peter Paul & Mary Mississippi John Hurt but who cares. That Sunday night July 25 Dylan took the stage with guitarist Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band Dylan with a Fender Stratocaster - a scene familiar to all from Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home - thereby changing the course of pop music forever. That night at Newport in an abbreviated performance he opened with "Maggie's Farm" and followed that with "Like a Rolling Stone" which had only been released five days earlier and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh It Takes a Train to Cry." He finished his performance that night with two acoustic songs "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." He never played at Newport again. This issue of the program also prints a short story of sorts by Bob Dylan "Off the Top of My Head" featuring off-the-top-of-his-head characters Horseman Photochick Miss Flunk and the Prez. <br/><br/> Newport Folk Art Foundation unknown books

Ellington's. personal bookplate. Housed in an embossed calf binder with string tie gilt lettering. 48 pages listed in table of contents which refer to 48 labelled sections each with items such as a summary of the project folder of photographs taken in Stoll's Alley newspaper clippings theatre programs and broadsides research records of holders of the property maps plans photographs drawings and other related ephemera. Very Good the leather binder with wear at spine ends and folders. Douglas D. Ellington 1886-1960 was a Native of North Carolina and trained at the Ecole des Beauv Arts being the first American to win the top honor for decorative competitions at the École. In addition to his work on this theatre project he designed numerous churches residences and government housing projects in Charleston as well as facilities associated with the Charleston Naval Base during the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his Art Deco buildings of the 1920s for Asheville N.C. The original Dock Street Theatre opened Feb. 12 1736 and was the site of the first building designed for theatric performances in the Thirteen Colonies. Likely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1740 the restored building was built as The Planters Hotel in 1809. The restoration started in 1935 and was completed by the time of the grand opening Nov. 26 1937. Perhaps the sole documentary record of this historic restoration provenance - from the collection of Joseph Hyde Pratt noted North Carolina geologist conservationist state and civic leader and WWI hero with personal invitation to him for the grand opening of Nov. 26 1937 laid in at rear. Assembled by an unknown attorney or law clerk the 19 items in this volume a 2-part transcript 15 briefs an oral argument and the opinion of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts form a documentary record of Owens v. Butler 297 U.S. 1 1936 the case that brought about the demise of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933. Part of Roosevelt's New Deal this was a Federal law that aimed to raise the value of crops by paying farmers and ranchers to reduce production. The money for these subsidies was generated through an exclusive tax on companies that processed farm products. This led to a series of seven suits by processors who believed they were being taxed unfairly. The most important of these was Owens v. Butler. As framed by the plaintiff's lawyers it asserted the right of a taxpayer to question the validity of a Federal tax. The Court decided in favor of Owens ruling that the taxes instituted under the 1933 Agricultural Adjustment Act were unconstitutional under the Tenth Amendment. As argued by Justice Roberts the tax was not valid because it was established in conjunction with coercive contracts with proceeds earmarked for the benefit of farmers complying with the prescribed conditions. The court also held that the basic premise of the act paying a farmer to produce less to manipulate prices went beyond the powers of the national government. The issues raised by Owens v. Butler were addressed by the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938 which continue. unknown books

This copy with an important inscription: "James Ford Bell Jr. from Grandmother Heffelfinger August 14 1916." James Ford Bell Jr. was the eldest son of the founder of General Mills and what is now the James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota. James Jr. was known locally as the CEO of Red Owl Food Store chain and was also a noted conservationist. His "Grandmother Heffelfinger" was the wife of Christopher B. Heffelfinger one of the authors of this book who from 1861 through 1864 served in Company D of the famous First Minnesota Infantry Regiment rising in rank from sergeant to captain shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. After serving the full term of his three-year enlistment Heffelfinger was mustered out at Fort Snelling in May 1864. After a brief appointment as a relief agent in the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864 he re-enlisted in April 1865 and was appointed a major in the First Minnesota Regiment of Heavy Artillery. Heffelfinger died in 1915 while this book was about to go to press although he did read through the manuscript and made suggestions "which have been adopted in the text as it now appears." Searles Taylor Heffelfinger and two others also deceased were the members of the "Coville Commission" who had charge of the preparation of this history. <br/><br/> Easton & Masterman, printers hardcover books

Title stamped in gilt on upper board and spine. Also designated "Vol. III" on spine. Front board and first few leaves detached but present rear hinge cracked. Text block otherwise sound and quite clean. Title page and one-page introduction by Blanco are followed by 258 b/w half-tone plates showing all of the monuments along the U.S./Mexico border from El Paso to the Pacific. Many of the images include the surveyors and their equipment. "In the 1870s and 1880s land ownership and border disputes broke out when valuable natural resources were discovered near the United States-Mexican border. The International Boundary Commission which set out in 1891 consisted of two main parties one from the U.S. and one from Mexico. John Whitney Barlow and Jacobo Blanco respectively U.S. and Mexican commissioners met at El Paso in February 1892 to begin the work. Their instructions were to resurvey the border line locate and rebuild the old monuments and install additional markers as necessary" Smithsonian.
