189822932Centralia IL: Brown's Business College 1898. Softcover. Very good. Four-page printed circular 11.5" x 8.75" with photographic illustrations accompanied by a mimeographed letter on Brown's letterhead and original mailing envelope. Folding creases and light handling wear; very good. Brown's Business College was a chain of business colleges located in the Midwest started in Illinois in the 1870s by George W. Brown 1845-1918. Brown eventually grew the chain to at least 29 locations where students could expect to receive instruction in accounting business and office practice writing stenography and the elements of success in business generally. This four-page illustrated circular announces the opening of the Centralia Illinois location on September 5 1898. It offers a brief description of the town and notes that although it is smaller than other Browns' locations "its central location its easy access to all points of southern Illinois and the moderate prices of board for students give it an importance out of proportion to its immediate population." Inside is description of the benefits of business school the demand for graduates the course of study etc. Brown's Business College unknown

Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter. Includes an early mention on the second table of "Cantonment Leavenworth on the river St. Peter's" under the command of Colonel Snelling with other particulars given with regard to its detachment of 345 soldiers. Cantonment Leavenworth became on the death of Snelling Fort Snelling which continues to stand at the confluence of the present day Minnesota River and the Mississippi. Gilt ruled gray cloth gilt lettering on front cover gilt and red illustration of Iron Brigade medal on rear cover 8vo 50 pp. Illusttrated with photographs. Memorial of Brig. General Rufus Dawes 1838-1899 who rose to command of the Iron Brigade during the Civil War. This regiment was composed of the 6th Wisconsin 7th Wisconsin 2nd Wisconsin 19th Indiana and later the 24th Michigan. The Iron Brigade fought in nearly all the great battles in the east that the Army of the Potomac was engaged in from Second Bull Run to the Petersburg campaign and had an instrumental roll at Gettysburg. Book consists of a funeral address by Rev. William Roe an address by one of Dawes' sons and an address by Dawes presented to the Society of the Army of the Tennessee in 1881. Offered "as is" with any faults. NOTE: SOME GRAVURES MISSING. <br/><br/>This peculiar work was included in the Library of the Woman's Building of the World's Columbian Exposition. The WCE inspired the female employees of Kane County Illinois to create this testimonial to the progressivism of the Kane County Government in employing women. Funds were raised with an elaborate celebration of the dedication of the new County Court House September 30 1892. The previous court house had burned down. This work recounts how the women employees defied the smoke and flames while feeding the paperwork into the vault. Not in Dybwad's bibliography of the World's Columbian Exposition . 1844008189Philadelphia: M. Fithian 1844. Paperback. Good. 12 p.; 22 cm. Lacking wrapper. Stamped on title page: "Case 42 Shelf E." In early May 1844 Protestant nativists in Philadelphia feeling threatened by the inscreasing number of Catholic immigrants held public meetings accusing Catholics of seeking to have the Bible removed from public schools among other things. Incendiary language led to violence in which people and buildings were attacked. The Court of Quarter Sessions created a grand jury to investigate which concluded that the Catholics were to blame and the nativists were "unoffending citizens." On June 18 1844 a meeting of Catholic citizens of the city appointed a committee to draft a response. In this address they refute the unfounded charge that they sought to have the Bible removed from the schools and responded to other recent events.
