1873List2825Eureka California 1873. Single 5 ½ x 12 inch ledger book with five small pages of notes and one short letter. Forty-two pages of the ledger filled out with many more blank. Some damage to spine on exterior otherwise very good to excellent. Offered here is a wharfage fee account ledger from Eureka California with dates between 1868 and 1873. The first Euro-American settlement at what is now Eureka on the Humboldt Bay was founded in 1850. It became a hub for bringing supplies to the Trinity Klamath and Salmon River mines both by water and over land and a major lumber manufacturing town with seven sawmills by 1858.1 Lumber vessels sent lumber down the Pacific coast as far as Chile. By the 1860s and 70s Eureka’s main exports were lumber and produce including pork and seafood via sailing vessels and there was also regular steamer service taking people and goods between there and San Francisco. Wharfage would have been paid at the port at Eureka for loading or unloading cargo; the ledger tracks ship names alongside either the names of men who loaded the cargo or the cargo type quantities and prices.<br /> <br /> 1 Owen Cochran Coy The Humboldt Bay Region 1850–1875 California State Historical Association 1929. unknown
1898252146San Francisco 1898. Original brass skeleton-style key 13â„4 inches in length attached by a small chain to a 4 x 13â„4 inch brass tag. Expected wear rubbing and discoloration. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folding case spine gilt. Apparently an original brass key for box 151 of the Nevada National Bank of San Francisco. The bank was founded in January 1898 and this key would seem to be contemporaneous with its opening. A nice piece of San Francisco and Wells Fargo financial relic. unknown

Original linen-backed chromolithograph stiff covers string-tied. Part One Cover has pulled out from the ties and the first two plates are partially pulled out; remnants of small labels on upper front corner of each cover; light general wear; the plates are clean; a very good and scarce set.<br /> <br /> Although the title references the two World Fairs - White City and Sunset City - the 15 stunning chromolithographic illustrations capture the architectural splendor and festive allure of the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition only. Single folded quarto sheet on blue wove paper with a large engraved street scene on one page a later pencil drawing of a floral embellishment on an interior page with the remainder blank. Slightly trimmed with minor loss to sky section minor creasing and dust soiling a handful of short repaired closed edge tears. An unusually obscure Gold Rush-era pictorial letter sheet featuring a detailed scene of a crowded Marysville plaza before the city caught fire on August 30 1851. The work was produced by Marysville bookseller and stationer R.A. Eddy and depicts a busy scene in Marysville with horses wagons and people carrying bundles in the foreground and the buildings of the frontier town in the background. The buildings are identified from right to left as follows: Stage Yuba House Magnolia El Dorado Exchange Eddy Book the publisher Sites Jones Shafer St. Louis Hotel Bartlett. This scene was also issued under a slightly different title View from the North Side of the Plaza Marysville. Both titles appear to be very rare with one copy of the alternate title in OCLC at Yale and two others per Baird at the British Library and in a private collection; the only two copies of the present work we could locate reside in a scrapbook at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and in the de Young Collection at the Society of California Pioneers.<br /> Baird 280a. One with manuscript caption verso including “Mtn Home of John Brown’s Sons Located just south of Brown’s Peak between Millards Cañon arroyo secoâ€. Wrinkling and marginal tearing with some missing corners. One photograph with tape residue. Very good. Owen Brown 1824–1889 and Jason Brown 1823–1912 were two of abolitionist John Brown’s twenty children. Owen Brown participated in both the Pottawatomie massacre and the Harpers Ferry raid. Following the unsuccessful raid he led the party of escapees to Pennsylvania. He lived in Put-in-Bay Ohio until 1885 when he joined his brother Jason—who was not involved in his father’s activities—in Pasadena. The two lived in poverty in mountain cabins several miles outside the city; offered here are two photographs of the brothers standing outside their cabins. In their time in Pasadena they were described as eccentric and hermetic but were liked and respected by those in town. Several obituaries of Owen Brown describe how witnessing the growing anti-Chinese sentiment in the region the brothers hired two Chinese men from the area to work for them “for the sake of the principle although they had no need†of the workers.1 One of these laborers may be the third man standing behind Jason Brown in the photograph where the brothers are astride donkeys.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Brown family and their legacy.<br /> <br /> 1 “The Late Owen Brown. The first photograph captures a bearded man atop a stump peering in the forest with sunlight pouring through a stand of redwoods. The second shows redwood rounds loaded on a train car with “Exelsior Redwood Co. Eureka Cal.†etched into the negative. All of the train workers are posed for the photograph along with several men and a young girl in the background. A well-preserved pair of images in very good condition with good contrast and some wear and toning to mounts. unknown

With envelopes. Near fine. Two letters from Alice C. Lantelle in San Francisco and “Mamie†in Oakland to their cousins Lizzie and Lottie Hubbard in Boston in late 1871 discussing school and family matters in the young state. The photograph shows several generations of family posing in front of a house. Mamie’s letter contains an interesting description of the origins of the name of Oakland’s Mount George:<br /> <br /> “there is one hill with a winding road which goes up to the top this is called mount George because there is an old hunter that lives up there whose name is George and he dresses in skins of animals he lives on quail and animals which he carries to market and sells; this mountain is covered with whortleberries in the summer seasonâ€. unknown

Quarter-size chip to upper corner of first leaf slightly affecting frontispiece image. Light toning and dust soiling. Scarce itinerary and program for a six-week tour of California and Mexico by rail operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Their dedicated "Mexico and California Special" sleeper train departed Philadelphia on February 12 1900 after receiving passengers from across the Northeast arriving on specially organized parlor cars and returned on March 29. The train took passengers to San Antonio where they boarded Southern Pacific service for three weeks in Mexico before rejoining the original train in Los Angeles on March 5 for the tour of California. The present pamphlet contains a detailed description of the train and its amenities a daily itinerary of activities and information on points of interest at each stop on the tour. Illustrated throughout with photographic images and with a large folding map delineating the entire route at the rear. We locate copies at three institutions -- Northwestern Berkeley and SMU. unknown

Printed on a sheet of green paper measuring 351â„4 x 161â„2 inches folding into twenty-four panels. In a half morocco and cloth folding box spine gilt. Two ink stamps of U.S. Geological Survey Library on front panel. A bit of wear at the edges and folds. One panel with a neat closed tear halfway across but with no loss. Overall very good. Five photographically-reproduced illustrations and two maps. Printed on a sheet of green paper measuring 351â„4 x 161â„2 inches folding into twenty-four panels. A fact-filled promotional encouraging emigration to and investment in Baja California. The International Land Company of Mexico issued several similar pamphlets on Baja in the mid-to-late 1880s see Barrett 1303-1307 but the present example is the most elaborate in format having been printed on a single large sheet folded into twenty-four panels with text printed in varying orientations. The agricultural opportunities are described at great length as are the qualities of the city of Ensenada. The illustrations show orange groves oaks banana plants and olive trees and the map shows the Peninsula down to the twenty-eighth parallel. Original printed blue paper wrappers bound with two staples. The contents are a little toned. The ink signature of B.A. Cecil Stephens a member of the Historical Society of Southern California in the 1890s as well as a principal in a syndicate interested in water flow in the lower Colorado River appears along the top edge of the front panel. Some minor toning and wear along the extremities of the wrappers with a stain to the rear panel; else very good. Barrett 1305 and 1306 although neither is this issue with the "Francis Valentine & Co. Printers San Francisco Cal." imprint at the bottom of the front panel.<br /> <br /> Extols the virtues of Baja California for agriculture mining and manufacturing. Includes statements from persons who have been on the company lands conditions prices and other information for colonists. 187976513Bodie: V.p. 1879-1882. Bodie Evening Miner. Two Issues; August 1st and September 19 1882. The first Bodie Evening Miner was published on May 9 1882.Bodie Morning News. June 5 1879.Each a bifolio 4 pp. and all three in very nice condition.The town of Bodie was the location of the first lucrative gold strike in Eastern California. Word spread quickly and by 1879 there was a boom town largely preserved today of around 10000 souls. In 1881 the Bodie and Benton Railway was built and used to haul lumber and other goods from the Bodie mines to the saw mill by Mono Lake. But the writing was on the wall by that time as wall and a mere decade later it was largely deserted. More than $38000000 in gild and silver was taken ut of Bodie and surrounds. 19002050Oroville Ca 1900. Very good. Three letters 13pp. total on seven lined sheets. Previously folded. Minor wear and toning. An engaging group of three letters from a mining engineer named Jack in Oroville California to his partner and perhaps brother Eric that discuss the development of their investments in an area that saw a rapid growth in dredge mining around the turn of the 20th century. Our correspondent was working out a new mechanical process for gold mining on a promising site. However his partner and addressee had given power of attorney to an investor named Wyckoff who is described as "a snoty little devil" who "knows no more about a mine or my affairs than a jack rabbit" but was starving the operation of cash while delivering a steady stream of insults. At one point Wyckoff "Left me without cash for ten days when we had nothing but potatoes to feed in the camp." The dastardly money man is also suspected of trying to steal the proprietary process which had already yielded fruit in Mexico. If that weren't bad enough the author was in poor health -- passing blood suffering from continuous headaches and feeling faint. And yet as with any mining venture a fortune was just around the corner: "I will make you money in the mine and prove the process so we can get bigger mines. Everybody is gold-crazy over here." Good content concerning a region of California that saw significant commercial mining development during the late-19th and early 20th centuries. unknown
