Smith was an important early figure in the field of industrial design. He also wrote books on art education instruction for teachers and drawing guides for students. This booklet is aimed at helping students learn to draw. It begins with definitions to help students' understanding defining words such as "quadrilateral" and "ellipse." The booklet features pages with drawing exercises printed lightly for students to trace next to blank pages which allow space for students to practice. Tuckerman 1778-1840 was a pioneer in the field of social reform and his advocacy for Boston's poor in the early 19th century was noteworthy for its emphasis upon education and direct action rather than simple charity. The work begun by Tuckerman nearly 200 years ago persists in the very active Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry which still espouses Tuckerman's principles in overseeing a wide range of public welfare programs in the Boston area. The Preface describes the organization of the catalogue and the improved catalogue methods that were employed by the BPL. This new methodology was the result of the national trend begun in city libraries to better communicate holdings with sister institutions and patrons. Letter dated May 18 1887. Notable for the time the membership board for United Hospital and Dispensary lists several woman doctors and emphasizes that here "women may be treated by competent female physicians exclusively if they so desire." It also lists Mary Livermore a famous journalist and advocate of women's rights. Very good. unknown

188542031Philadelphia: W.H. Butler n.d. ca 1885. 1885. TRADE CATALOG. 5 11/16" x 12 3/4" color sheet folded to 6 panels. Illustrations. Among the successful shoe-machines invented by the Globe Buffer company was the “Globe Buffer” a machine for “buffing” or sandpapering the bottoms of boots and shoes. The first “ Globe Buffer" was set up in November 1881. The company also manufactured the “Globe Heel Scourer” for smoothing or scouring the edges of heels of boots and shoes. The company also introduced the "Globe Insole" an invention the promised to replace the flexible leather that was currently in vogue for insoles to shoes. It was invented and patented by Mr. George A. Fullerton and consists of a substance very similar to leather but which is stronger and much more flexible. To test the merits the shoes thousands of pairs were produced and worn and in not a single pair of them did a stitch give out. The material for the insoles is stronger than any leather of the same thickness. It is preserved while leather is destroyed by perspiration. The edges are smooth which prevents them from cutting the stitches. Shoes made of it will not squeak. The brochure offers one cover panel showing 2 cherubs one holding a woman's boot and the other the "Globe Flexible Insole; one panel offering the company's guarantee; and one panel offering information about their insoles. "Remember that the INSOLE is the foundation of the shoe and that Glove Flexible Insole" is superior in every particular to leather or any other known substance. That the stitches and tacks are all beneath the surface thus contributing a smooth soft cushion." Opposite 3 panels offers a beautiful color sailing scene showing a yacht race and with "Compliments of the Globe Buffer co. only Manufacturers of Globe Flexible Insoles at the bottom of one panel. Hardcover dark orange cloth boards ornately decorated on front and spine. Exterior shows scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. Spine is a bit worn with a dark shade to one side. The interior binding of the text portion of the pages is good and tight but the hinge is cracked at the rear board in the front hinge is starting. No signatures or bookplates no library markings no handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age and there is some scattered foxing and spotting present. Beautiful original Benjamin Bradley binding. Gilt emblem of the city of Boston stamped on front and back covers. Extensive blind tooling on the covers and spine typical of Bradley bindings. Half title gilt stamped on spine. Text block shows very slight foxing mostly along the fore edge but the pages are bright clean and unmarked. The binding is strong and square. Covers are a little worn at the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine. Small bump in the middle of the fore edge of the back board and on its bottom corner. Overall a very handsome copy. J. Once bound in with other similar pamphlets these three related items are unbound and removed with stab marks along the left edges. The pagination is a follows: pages 1-11 1 & 13-21 1-8; and 1-12. There is some scattered foxing throughout all three items. The cover page of the Senate No. 10 report dated December 15 1829 is darkened & stained with minor chipping to the bottom corners of that page and of the last page. Very good.</p><p>First edition Massachusetts Senate No. 21. The report is signed on page 11 by John W. Lincoln Chairman. The report is followed by the text of a bill entitled "An act to establish the Boston and Lowell Rail Road Corporation."</p><p>The Boston and Lowell Railroad was the first major railroad in the state of Massachusetts. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was preceded by the Middlesex Canal. Converting the canal to a railroad would eliminate the issue of transportation being unavailable during the winter when the canal froze. Patrick Tracy Jackson led the task of convincing the state legislature to fund the project. This proved difficult as the investors of the Middlesex Canal were against building a new form of transportation designed to replace their canal. The report at hand details the protest of the directors of the Middlesex Canal against granting the petition of John F. Loring and others to construct a railroad in its place. Loring and the other investors received their charter on June 5 1830 and the railroad began operations on June 24 1835.</p><p>The pamphlet is accompanied by an earlier February 12 1830 pamphlet titled:"To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled. : The president directors and company of the Middlesex Canal having seen the publication of the petition of John F. Loring and others for a rail road from Boston to Lowell and the order of notice thereon beg leave to present the following remonstrance to granting the prayer thereof." 12 pages. Signed page 12: Wm. Sullivan Josh. Coolidge Geo. Hallet committee of directors of Middlesex Canal to this purpose duly authorized. House No. 40 printed by Dutton and Wentworth 1830.</p><p>In addition an earlier pamphlet from 1829 is included: "Boston December 15 1829. To His Excellency Levi Lincoln Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts : Sir On the behalf of the Commissioners of Internal Improvements I have the honor to transmit herewith a report of a survey made in conformity to a resolve of the legislature passed on the 12th day of June 1829 directing the Board to survey a route for a rail road from the town of Taunton to some point in the route previously surveyed between Boston and Providence : with great consideration and respect I am your humble and most obe't. serv't.
