EPHEMERA ADVERTISING PREMIUM PAPER DOLLS HOLIDAYS CHRISTMAS JUVENILE. 13 5/16" x 9"; 13 5/16" x 26 ¾" with the 3 panels unfolded; stiff glazed color half-tone tri-fold paper toy with images to cut-out glue and form into a toy shop; printed recto and verso; gift inscription in pencil "Mery Xmas Ruth-From Esther" on rear panel; light soiling and rubbing of edges; very good. Not recorded. An engaging advertising premium paper toy from the Boston Store in Chicago once located at State Madison and Dearborn Streets. Titled "Xmas Toy Store Entire 11th Floor" the illustrations are to be cut-out and assembled into a tri-fold "Toy Shop" and "Doll Shop" including stand-up cut-outs of a Santa a Christmas tree two children and toys to fill the shop. The shelves of the store are labeled "Mechanical Toys" "Dolls" and Sports and Games." An ad for EFFanBEE Dolls "They Walk They Talk They Sleep" is featured on a banner over the dolls' shelves. The EFFanBEE doll company was founded by Flieschaker and Baum or F & B in 1910 and were known for their realistically proportioned dolls. Two of their dolls Patsy and DyDee Baby are still favored among today's collectors. Instructions for assembly of the toy store are printed on one of the panels. <br /> <br /> The back panel features a lithographic representation of the building in which the Boston Store was located. Founded in 1869 the architects Holabird and Roche oversaw the building of the 17-story department store between 1905 and 1917. The store closed its doors in 1948 but the building remains in Chicago. During the Boston Store tenure the building boasted 19 Otis elevators and many varied occupants including a post office Western Union a savings bank several soda fountains and restaurants a barber a cigar factory and an observation tower at the top. The white lettering to the spine remains very bright. Light toning to the text-block with a little spotting and offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. A little rubbing and loss at the corners folds and spine ends. Some small closed tears to the front upper edge and the upper and lower spine folds. Light age related markings and light spotting to the rear panel. The wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed without dedication by the author to the half-title : 'Yours sincerely Lucy M. Boston'. Precursor to the book of the same name with a slightly different subtitle that would become a cornerstone of the second-wave feminist movement of the 1970s breaking all kinds of barriers that stood in the way of women taking control of their own bodies & health. Born at a 1969 workshop entitled "Women and Their Bodies" it was first published by the Boston Women's Health Course Collective & printed by the New England Free Press in that same city in 1971. We believe that this is the Second Printing described as "New Printing of Women & Their Bodies" on the front cover described by the editors as having been "rushed to print with no revisions since the first printing sold out so quickly." In a brief editorial note on the Table of Contents page they outline revisions they plan to make in the upcoming 3rd printing & reach out to readers for additional suggestions of what they would like to see included. On the verso of this page however print runs & dates through the 8th printing in July 1972 are listed so this may be that 8th printing retaining the 2nd printing notice Unlike the softcover book in stiff white wrappers decorated in color that is so familiar to all women over the past five decades this early edition was still on newsprint in black & white with a cover price of $.35. It consists of 3 sections each about 44 pages stapled together on the left in 136 pages a two-page letter from the editors outlining their plans for turning this "course" into a book to be published by Simon & Schuster in the interest of using the publisher's massive distribution network to get it into the hands of as many women as possible far more than the Collective could manage. It became a reality in 1973. The book remains a critical cornerstone in the movement for women's rights & has never been out of print. Extremely scarce in this printing with only 2 copies available in the trade & 2 held by libraries in Germany & the Netherlands as of this writing Nov. 2023. Off-white wrappers show tanning around all edges. Only flaw is a torn triangular section to top edge of front cover 1.25" x 1.25" x .75" with tiny .25" vertical tear to same area on following 2 pages & a few microscopic tears/nicks to same edge. In Freedom's Birthplace: A Study of the Boston Negroes 1914 presents an early twentieth century sociological examination of African American life in Boston grounded in extended field research and community engagement. Written by a social reformer affiliated with settlement work and urban social service institutions the study compiles nearly a decade of observation and consultation with Black Bostonians to document demographic patterns labor conditions class structure and institutional affiliations. The work situates Boston's Black population within a longer historical trajectory beginning with emancipation in Massachusetts in 1781 and continuing through the development of a free Black community closely tied to abolitionist activity in the nineteenth century providing a substantial empirical record for the study of race urban life and reform era social science.<br /> <br /> Daniels John. 19347508Boston: B.B. Inc.; Ben-Burk Distillers 1934. Small folded pamphlet 11 x 6.5 cm. 16 pages when folded. Printed in red black and blue. FIRST EDITION. One of the very rare precursors to the famous Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide 1935. Following Repeal Ben-Burk Distillers published the Guide which was to become one of the iconic cocktail recipe books. Originally published as a promotional item for the Ben-Burk line of spirits distilled in Boston the Guide became a staple of professional and home bars around the country. But prior to the first work titled Old Mr. Boston Guide Ben-Burk published One Hundred Cocktails Some Old -- Some New 1932 and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails Fizzes Punches Highballs Toddies and Long Drinks 1934 both of which are very rare. We can add this small work – previously unrecorded – to this short list of precursors. A bit of soiling to edges and one corner dog-eared; otherwise very good. Extremely rare documentary pamphlet of the Resurrection City encampment that sprouted on the National Mall in Washington DC from May 12 to June 24 1968. It is also associated with or tasked as part of The Poor People's Campaign. This booklet is described as follows on the Smithsonian Website of the National Museum of African American History and Culture: "A paperback booklet printed in black ink on white paper. The front cover is a black-and-white photograph of a person's bare right muddy foot. At the top of the front cover is the text in white print All proceeds to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference $1 and at the bottom is the title in bold white print This Was Resurrection City. The back cover is a black-and-white photograph of the legs of two people one wearing jeans striding barefoot through mud. The booklet is 20 pages long containing 28 photographs of men women and children living working eating and playing within Resurrection City interspersed with poetic text." OCLC locates 5 copies only. Public TransitMassachusetts Trolley and railway car photograph archive documenting electric transit circulation across Boston and the Greater Boston Area including Lynn Haverhill Lawrence Saugus Marblehead Watertown in the 1930s. The archive records cars trolley routes terminals and yards on the streets of Boston and surrounding cities during the long transition from privately run trolley networks to publicly managed metropolitan transit. Most images show the Boston Elevated Railway and Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway orbit with additional views tied to Springfield Providence and Connecticut operations placing the photographs within the broader interurban rail network that linked Boston to surrounding towns before the official creation of the MBTA. <br /> <br /> Boston's subway system is the oldest in the United States created in the 1890s by the Rapid Transit Commission in response to severe streetcar congestion on Tremont Street. The system created by the Boston Elevated Railway Company at the turn of the century helped define the infrastructure of modern Boston transit. These photographs preserve the street-level operating environment in the early years of expanding public transport in the city: destination boards transfer points yard scenes terminal loops and rolling stock moving through dense commercial districts snowbound streets and residential outskirts prior to the establishment of the MBTA in 1947.<br /> Photo archive of 41 silver gelatin photographs approximately 3 x 5.5 inches greater Boston and nearby cities in New England circa 1934-1946. The archive includes single-car and articulated streetcars coupled cars work or service equipment and yard scenes photographed in active street settings. Visible destination and route identifiers include Main Myrtle Lakeside Watertown Boston Tunnel Beach Bluff Saugus Branch Essex St Lawrence Main St line Haverhill Oak Park line and Marblehead Depot with captions on verso marking dates and locations. Several photographs show cars in dense commercial blocks with visible storefronts and wall advertising including American Loan & Savings Association Whitworth's Rubber Sporting Goods M. Casey & Co. Cigars & Tobacco Coca-Cola Pillsbury's Best Flour Harms School of Business and Rem for coughs; others show cars at depots loops and yards including Hooker St Yards. Repeated fare and service slogans are also visible on the cars especially "Save money with weekly pass" and "Ride all day for $1 20 cities 51 towns" makes the archive particularly strong as evidence of regional transit marketing and network integration. Other images capture scenes of the train cars in the snow at crossings switching tracks and running beside early automobiles an active record of the trolley system functioning within everyday urban traffic.<br /> This archive preserves the operating network that fed a larger system of public transit across city neighborhoods and outlying towns serviced by America's oldest subway system. The photographs show the routes terminal circulation yard storage and municipal reach of this system especially in the Eastern Massachusetts territory where one fare structure and one rolling-stock family served dozens of communities. Light handling wear and some discoloration on verso images clean and complete. Overall very good condition. The magazine consists of six sheets typed on the rectos stapled together with two additional blank sheets serving as front and rear covers. The front cover is detached very good. A “special paper†published by the members of the South Boston Hebrew Juniors as part of a fundraising effort. Made-up of various short pieces relating to the club including an original poem and a jest about how to become an American citizen. With an accompanying holograph essay: “Anti-Semitism the Scourge of Israel; and Palestine the Hope of Israel.†written in ink on the rectos only of six notebook sheets presumably by one of the club's younger members. References are made to: “the thousands who are homeless in the Mississippi Valley …†“war and desolation in China†and to “the millions in Eastern Europe whose spirit has been broken .†Some toning and a few scattered tiny tears to the right edges very good. Comprises 30 annual issues covering the years 1870 through 1902 with exception of 1896-7 which were apparently never published recording annual price fluctuations on the Boston Stock Market. <br /> A rare piece preserving stock market ephemera from one of the most tumultuous periods of American financial history. 1905List2839Boston Massachusetts 1905. Single 8.5 x 8.5 inch sheet cut from a larger whole; likely missing a portion. Marks at upper left side some folding. Otherwise excellent to near fine. Wanted poster for Mary S. Dean dated December 16 1905. Three months prior a young woman’s torso had been found in a suitcase floating in Boston Harbor. A month later a suitcase containing her limbs was found and she was identified as Susanna Geary. In September Geary had gone to the medical practice on Tremont Street where Dean worked as a nurse and Dean had performed an abortion for her - at the time an illegal procedure in Massachusetts. Geary developed sepsis from the surgery; when she died Dean and three men one a doctor conspired to dismember Geary and dispose of her body in the ocean.1 The doctor was acquitted and the two men pleaded guilty but Mary S. Catalog from 1897 measures 14 x 11 inches folio deep red cloth stamped in gilt very good some small scattered abrasions to rear cover. Although the catalog is from Cook & Watkins in Boston it is stamped John W. Holt Farmington PA on cover: this was a Fayette County business near present day Nemacolin and Fallingwater. The catalog has 60 sheets of lithograph designs of stone concrete granite and marble monuments. In addition there are 128 loose sheets of monumental designs dated from 1895 to 1903: 63 sheets measure 13 x 11; 42 sheets measure 11.75 x 9 and seem to be taken from 1901-1903 issues of "Granite" magazine; 9 sheets measure 12 x 9.5 and are gravure photos and finally 14 sheets measure 18 x 12 on slightly thicker paper lithographs in faint gray-blue tone dated 1895 and featuring monumental designs by Charles H. Gall - whose offices were 127 N. Dearborn St. in Chicago. In addition there is a zipping leather briefcase measuring 15 x 11 x 2 inches holding 8 polished granite samples each of which measures 6 x 4 inches. All in very good condition.
